Hanlie Botha shared thisLaughter, candid conversations, and brilliant minds—yesterday’s AWSN Symposium 2026 was everything a great event should be. I had the privilege of sitting next to the remarkable Lieutenant General Michelle McGuinness CSC at a roundtable of Australia's top executive women shaping the future of cybersecurity. Days like yesterday remind me of what makes the cyber community so strong: - Curiosity over comfort: Leaders who love to learn and welcome being challenged. - Connection over silos: Combining deep expertise to solve big problems. - Authenticity above all: Showing up with vulnerability and humor. Thank you to Jacqui L., AWSN - Australian Women in Security Network, Telstra and every speaker who shared their wisdom. Grateful for this amazing network. #AWSN2026 #CyberSecurity #Leadership #WomenInSTEM #CyberCommunity

Hanlie Botha shared thisIncredible energy at Atmos SPHERE 2026. I’m inspired by a community of security leaders who aren't just reacting to threats anymore—we’re building for resilience. Lieutenant General Michelle McGuinness reemphasised the importance of vigilance, collaboration and strong cyber habits – a critical reminder for all of us. I particularly enjoyed the session ‘Dark Logic: Inside The Mind of a Hacker’ with Jana Dekanovska , James T. and Craig Martin. Fascinating insights! Huge thanks to John Moran for the invite! TEG is proud to have Atmos Australia and New Zealand in our corner as our trusted Incident Response partner. #AtmosSPHERE2026 #CyberSecurity #IncidentResponse #Resilience #TEG

Hanlie Botha shared thisWhat an incredible day at the #AWSNSummit2025, marking ten years of the Australian Women in Security Network! A huge congratulations to Jacqui L. the visionary founder of #AWSN. Her phenomenal work and unwavering dedication to supporting women in cybersecurity are truly inspirational. It was really special to share a roundtable with so many female Cyber leaders. In a field where I often find myself as the sole woman at the table, this gathering was a refreshing and empowering experience. The day was filled with magnificent speakers! Key takeaways that resonated with me were: • Don't underestimate yourself. • Push towards the uncomfortable. • Own your path and pave the way for others. I loved hearing about Narelle Devine CSM ‘s journey to becoming the Global CISO of Telstra. #AWSN #Cybersecurity #WomenInTech #Leadership #Inspiration

Hanlie Botha shared thisPowerful lessons for aspiring CISOs like me. "Lead with humility, not arrogance. If you are the smartest person in the room, you hired wrong." It isn't just about technical expertise; it's about building a strong, collaborative team where diverse perspectives thrive. Real leaders grow leaders, they don't hoard knowledge for power. Being generous with what you know and creating opportunities for others is essential for the growth of the entire field. #CISO #Leadership #Cybersecurity #ProfessionalDevelopmentHanlie Botha shared thisI’ve been sitting with this one for a while. Finally put it into words. The CISO Code of Conduct: Ditch the Ego, Lead for Real just went live on CSO Online. It’s about the behaviors we’ve let slide in this industry for too long. The ego. The gatekeeping. The performance. Some people won’t like it. That’s fine. It’s meant to start a conversation, not avoid one. Huge thanks to the people who helped shape this with their honesty: - Steve Hindle - David B. Since then, I have dedicated some of my time to learning what technical controls really can be applied to agents, MCPs and AI workloads. Then things got out of control.. I have built, and now I'm training an AI to manage an “anomalous incident and event management” tool. Among other things, it identifies security incidents (ironically, including those coming from AI). If you want to learn more about my project you can read about it here. https://lnkd.in/gPVuhBvw

Being immersed in a room of accomplished, passionate women who are leading the way in cyber was quite the experience. The calibre of speakers, from Lieutenant General McGuinnes to Jessica Hunter, demonstrated the unique skill and talent that is present is Australia's cyber workforce. Every presentation and discussion throughout the day provided insight and encouraged reflection, and I came away buzzing with energy to get started on some of these ideas, which is why I hadn’t gotten around to posting yet! The Symposium also provided a great opportunity to make new connections, and I hope to continue to learn from this amazing community.

Hanlie Botha liked thisHanlie Botha liked thisThe best thing about a conference isn’t always what you learn. Sometimes, it’s who reminds you that you’re not doing it alone. 💜 The #AWSN2026 Symposium was a powerful reminder of that. Congratulations Tara Dharnikota for doing such a brilliant job as MC, thank you to all the inspiring speakers who shared their journeys and remain focused on supporting others and lifting the next generation to new heights. Walking into a room and reconnecting with Jinan Budge,Yvette Lejins, Ivana Kvesic, Daniela F., Ingrid Matosevic and Catherine Rowe was such a highlight. The hugs. The laughs. The “How have you been?” conversations. The stories of where life and careers have taken us. And those conversations that pick up as though no time has passed. That’s the magic of community. These are the people who quietly make a difference in your journey: • The mentors who challenge you. • The sponsors who open doors. • The friends who check in. • The cheerleaders who celebrate your wins. • The people who believe in you before you fully believe in yourself. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have people like that in my corner. And #AWSN has reminded me again that we don’t build successful careers alone. We build them through relationships. Through people who share their knowledge. People who make introductions. People who create opportunities. People who say, “You should go for it.” And people who are genuinely happy to see you succeed. That’s the community I want to keep contributing to. Because leadership isn’t just about how high we climb. It’s about how many people we help climb with us. If you have people in your corner who have helped you along the way, tell them. Tag them. Thank them. We often talk about the importance of networks. But sometimes, what we really need is community. 💜 #AWSNSymposium2026 #AWSN #CyberSecurity #WomenInCyber #WomenInSecurity #Leadership #Mentoring #Community #CyberLeadership #WomenInTech

Hanlie Botha liked thisHanlie Botha liked thisLast week I delivered an opening keynote at the 2026 AWSN - Australian Women in Security Network Symposium, joining leaders from across government, industry, not-for-profits, and academia to explore the theme of Intersectional Leadership in Security Innovation. My keynote focused on a simple but increasingly important reality: security is ultimately a leadership challenge. As our environment becomes more complex and interconnected, resilience depends not only on technology and capability, but on how we understand risk, respond to uncertainty and make decisions under pressure. Some of the most effective teams I have worked with have been those willing to challenge assumptions, test ideas and approach problems from different perspectives. Those perspectives often reveal risks, opportunities and solutions that might otherwise be missed. That is why intersectional leadership matters. The organisations best positioned to navigate complexity are those that bring different experiences into decision-making, create space for diverse views, and encourage collaborative planning. As we continue building Australia's resilience, we must keep investing in our people, seeking out perspectives different from our own, and be ready to promote those perspectives and influence the decisions that shape our future. Because building a more secure Australia is a responsibility we all share. #AWSNSymposium2026 #AWSN #WomenInSecurity

Trying to get approval for security transformation spend? The Australian Institute of Company Directors snapshot on Governing Through a Cyber Crisis is written for directors... but it’s a goldmine for anyone trying to influence budget or transformation spend. 🔎 Tip for reading it: Don’t just scan the director guidance. Instead, ask yourself: if this is how the board expects to act in an incident, how can I shape or reframe my business case or spend proposal so it matches those expectations?

Some key highlights from Australian Signals Directorate (ASD)'s Cyber Threat Report 2024–2025: 1. There is a significant rise in cyber incidents and reports: The Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) reported that in during 2024-2025 they have responded to over 1,200 major cybersecurity incidents which is a 11% increase from the previous year. 2. There is a steep rise in the financial impact due to cybercrimes: For businesses, the average loss due to cybercrimes is on the rise, Small businesses lost up to $56,571 a 14% increase from last year, Medium business lost up to $97,166 a 55% increase, and Large businesses lost up to $202,691 a 221% increase. It was also reported that an individual average self reported loss was $36,633 3. Critical infrastructure under increasing threat: Critical infrastructures have received notifications of 190 potential malicious cyber activity impacting their network which is a 111$ increase from last year. The Top 3 most common types of activity which led to infrastructure related incidents were: Scanning or Reconnaissance making up 41% DoS/DDoS making up 31% Phishing making up 20% 4. Credential compromise, email attacks and phishing remain the main methods of attack: It was reported that email compromise with no direct financial loss accounted for ~19% of business reports, Business email compromise with financial loss ~15%, identity fraud ~ 11% and phishing emails remains one of the most common attack methods. 5. New technologies are amplifying the risk like AI The report also warns the rise in the use of Generative AI by cybercriminals as they use these tools to automate the analysis of extensive datasets which allows them to find vulnerabilities, they also use generative AI to create content like videos, text, fake voices, websites etc. to help them trick their target easier. 💡 The big moves organisations must take: a. Implement Effective event logging - You can't defend what you can't see b. Manage legacy IT risks - Legacy technology lets threats thrive c. Effective Third-Party Risk Management (TPRM) - Shut the back door, choose sercure and verifable technologies d. Start preparing for Post Quantum Cryptography (PQC) more details: https://lnkd.in/gCVf9fSq

For someone who has worked in the financial services sector across the Pacific including NZ, the managing of technology and cybersecurity risk exist on enterprise platforms. These platforms are not available for the small to medium businesses and even to government agencies due to the high cost. Excel has been the go to tool for risk registers and management of risk. Whilst other platforms targeting SMEs exist I felt a more tailored one for the Pacific was needed. So for the last few months maybe a year I've been putting together this light weight GRC tool called /thatsit risk with the help of Ai tools. It is now LIVE and ready. Feedback welcome. app.thatsitconsultants.com

🟣Governing Through a Cyber Crisis: In 2024, the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD), in partnership with the Cyber Security Cooperative Research Centre (CSCRC) and Ashurst, released “Governing Through a Cyber Crisis: Cyber Incident Response and Recovery for Australian Directors.” 18 months later, these guidelines are relevant more than ever. ☑️ Readiness: Build the Foundations Before the Breach. Boards are expected to lead from the top, not just sign off on policy. Effective readiness means: - A comprehensive, regularly tested Cyber Incident Response Plan, integrated with business continuity and communications frameworks. - Clear board-level roles and responsibilities, including when to activate sub-committees or crisis structures. - Scenario testing and simulation exercises that involve directors, not just IT teams, ensuring governance mechanisms work under pressure. - Data governance frameworks that clearly identify where sensitive information resides, who owns it, and how it’s protected. - Supply-chain due diligence: recognising that vulnerabilities often sit outside the organisation’s perimeter. ☑️ Response: Act Decisively, Communicate Transparently. - When an incident unfolds, speed and clarity are critical. Boards should expect imperfect information but must ensure that: - Management activates the crisis plan and establishes clear reporting cadence. - Stakeholder communication is transparent, coordinated, and empathetic with customers, regulators, and the market. - Legal and regulatory obligations are promptly addressed. - External experts (forensics, legal, and communications) are mobilised early. - Larger organisations are encouraged to establish a Cyber Incident Sub-Committee to enable agile oversight, freeing the full board to focus on strategic and reputational governance ☑️ Recovery and Remediation: Oversight Beyond the Crisis. - The “long tail” of cyber risk extends months or years beyond the initial event. Boards play a central role in ensuring: - Root-cause analysis is independently reviewed and acted upon. - Remediation programs are well-resourced, customer-focused, and transparent. - Employee wellbeing is prioritised, fatigue and moral strain are common post-incident. - Regulatory investigations, compensation, and class actions are managed with integrity and accountability. - Lessons learned are embedded into the organisation’s cyber governance and shared responsibly with peers to strengthen the wider ecosystem. Boards that treat cyber resilience as part of enterprise risk management, rather than an IT line item will be the ones that navigate crises with credibility and protect stakeholder trust. NCSC (National Cyber Security Centre) has just released its 2025 Cyber Threat Report, and one section in particular made my eye twitch a little: “While cyber security is an important focus of the Government, most protections in New Zealand exist outside government. Individuals, private organisations, and industry are best placed to protect data, networked devices, and infrastructure.” In other words, we have quietly outsourced a chunk of our national security to thousands of under-resourced organisations and then hoped for the best. Yep! read that again. If most of the protection exists outside government, does that mean we now have a national infrastructure risk by proxy? That is more than mildly concerning, it is wildly concerning and needs to be reigned in and addressed! New Zealand should be investing in shared platforms, national cyber services that keep essential services running and sharing security insights that reduce national risk and improve public value.

Statement by the Director-General New Zealand Security Intelligence Service This statement relates to security issues in the New Zealand context. It reinforces the concerns raised by partner agencies in Australia and strategic security risk management consultancies such as Harris Security Management. One important issue typically missed by executives relates to the risk of threats and dynamics of the broader security environment reaching into and gaining hold within organisations across the spectrums of government, commercial, education, arts and not-for-profit workplaces. Social cohesion as an empowering factor in developing and sustaining positive corporate culture is seriously challenged when political activism occurs in the workplace and in some instances, this includes intimidation of colleagues. This is not a theory; it is for many organisations ‘the elephant in the room’. We know this from our work with clients. When political activism in the workplace occurs, there are consequences for example: · loss of good personnel escaping to ‘safer’ organisations · diminished attractiveness to potential employees (the ‘word’ gets around) · difficult relationship management with external stakeholders · loss of trust, innovation, collaboration, commitment and performance · loss of investment in personnel development · reduction of safety and security standards · loss of corporate resilience · increase in sick leave · elevation of the risk of psychosocial claims. Organisations need to be strategic, transparent and honest to identify and effectively manage intimidation to conform with the agenda of internal political activists and not let it become engrained. Failure to do so will result in a toxic work environment. Delay in facing this unhealthy situation is not an option. Determined leadership at the top is absolutely required for corporate hygiene. If you have concerns regarding these issues for your organisation, supply chain or 3rd party management services and want strategic clarity and solutions, please contact us.
