Borderlands 4 Guide

What is Borderlands 4?

Borderlands 4 is the next installment in the popular looter-shooter series developed by Gearbox Software. The game was officially unveiled in August of 2024. It released on September 12, 2025 and will launch on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S. A Nintendo Switch 2 will be released at a future date.

The game revolves around vault hunters who each have their own distinct skills and traits that can be employed in first-person combat against the bandits and denizens of Kairos. The primary antagonist will be the Order, lead by the Timekeeper, who intends to track down the rarest and most powerful treasures. Unlike previous entries, Borderlands 4 aims to reduce "the borders" and increase "the lands." Essentially, the world is far more seamless with less loading screens and more exploration options available.

As with previous entries, the Borderlands staple of boasting "billions" of weapons and accessories with all of the game's components and various manufacturers' parts still exists. Though, "billions" is an increase over the the 1 billion mark noted for Borderlands 3. At launch, the game featured four new vault hunters that players can choose from.

  • Vex: She takes the place of the series' signature Siren role. With her abilities she can deal kinetic damage and use powerful spectral manuevers.
  • Rafa: He is an Exo-soldier outfitted with a Tediore exosuit and is capable of  charged offensive strikes ustilizing cannons and blades.
  • Harlowe: She is Maliwan scientist with superior intellect and an array of gadgets at her disposal ready to deploy in battle.
  • Amon: He acts as the tank-like bruiser who excels and close-range combat.

New Game Mechanics

Borderlands 4 comes with new mechanics that aid in exploration and traversal.

  • Digirunners: Players can summon a Digirunner nearly anywhere that allows them to glide across the landscape at high speeds.
  • Echo-4: This drone companion offers assistance throughout your travels including navigating the best paths to your objectives.
  • Conquer: Players can take points of interest occupied by the Order and claim them for the Crimson Resistance. This will offer new fast travel options.

Each Vault Hunter represents a unique class choice that will help determine your playstyle, though you have a lot of freedom to build them how you like. Vault Hunters in Borderlands 4

Amon

The Forgeknight

amon2 borderlands 4 wiki guide

Amon was raised in a Vault monster-worshipping cult—until the Vault was opened and the creature turned on everyone he loved. As the only survivor, he dedicates his life to finding and killing as many of these beasts as he can. Amon, a warrior-poet, is introspective and unflinching to his duty, but despite his hardened appearance, he has a warm attitude, often regaling comrades in arms with stories and advice earned throughout his travels.

Harlowe

The Gravitar

harlowe2 borderlands 4 wiki guide

Harlowe is a former Maliwan combat scientist, driven by the need to understand how things work. While this initially made her an outcast amongst her Traunt relatives, Harlowe has used her intellect to bring new tech and gadgetry to the battlefield as a Vault Hunter. Harlowe's brilliance is apparent in everything she does, but so is her enthusiasm and love for life. Harlowe brings everything to the fight, including her sunny disposition. Always ready to give a beat down, her spirit can't be beat.

Rafa

The Exo-Soldier

rafa borderlands 4 wiki guide

Rafa was born and raised in microgravity, which severely altered his bone density and musculature, making it impossible for him to survive elsewhere. Desperate to explore, he signed up to Tediore's military force. In exchange for a tour of duty, his body was altered for a new kind of exo-suit. But when it became clear Tediore never intended to end his service, Rafa went AWOL. Now he's on the run and plans to enjoy whatever time he has left before his Tediore Deadframe ends him for good.

Vex

The Siren

vex2 borderlands 4 wiki guide

Vex had a rough upbringing that was made more complicated by receiving her Siren powers. Her cynical and sarcastic demeanor comes from having to fend for herself and scrape for everything she's got. But underneath her salty exterior, Vex is an empath who knows better than anyone how much life can suck. Ever the pessimist, Vex still believes in helping others. And if helping others means dealing damage to oppressive jerks, Vex will always be first in line.

"Welcome, Vault Hunters! Today’s update includes support for the addition of Bloomreaper the Invincible, True Mode, and Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode 6. This comes alongside a variety of improvements across gameplay, summons behavior, gear, visuals. We’ve done a lot of work to boost performance, refine gear, and improve the splitscreen and menu usability in this update. Thank you for the continued feedback and reports that are being sent in. There are more updates on the way!"

  • This update includes some additional balance changes and updates. Check the full Patch Notes list.

"Welcome, Vault Hunters! Today’s update delivers some key community-requested improvements, smarter loot drops, and a new Legendary Loot Indicator for your radar. These are alongside major improvements, visual polish, and stability updates for a smoother experience on Kairos.

Beyond today’s update, the team is hard at work on a host of other highly requested quality-of-life features. Work on Photo Mode is wrapping up, while other updates like support for multiple active Big Encore Machines and more options for scaling difficulty are coming (we’ll talk more about these closer to their launch). Further into the future, we’re looking at ways to improve shared character progression, add additional endgame-focused activities (did someone say Takedown?), launch Cross-Save support, and more.

Now that we're post-launch, we want to break down how we deliver updates to you! We have two main kinds:

"Minor Updates" will take care of any smaller, more pressing issues outside of the planned update schedule (primarily balance changes, if needed). They also refresh the three types of Weekly Activities: the Weekly Big Encore Boss, Weekly Wildcard Mission, and Maurice’s Black Market Vending Machine location. Minor Updates are scheduled weekly on Thursdays.

"Major Updates" deliver larger-scale changes, including new content, more sweeping balance adjustments, performance improvements, and the addressing of any reported issues. Major Updates are less common, and are planned to deploy about a month apart.

With all of today’s changes though, we hope you can feel the positive effects in gameplay as you experience How Rush Saved Mercenary Day and make progress on your Vault Cards!"

bounty pack 1 patch notes borderlands 4 wiki guide full.png

"We're stoked for you to team up with Rush and teach Minister Screw the true meaning of Mercenary Day! This being a holiday-themed Bounty Pack, we knew we had to deliver it to you by the end of the year. However, the team realized that there was more mayhem than time when it came to getting as much into Bounty Pack 1 as originally planned while never slowing down in their mission to improve the Borderlands 4 player experience.

So in the spirit of the season, we're giving a gift to all Borderlands 4 players by making Bounty Pack 1 free!* Thank you for all the passion and support you've given us as a community. We're hard at work making sure future Bounty Packs are more fully loaded with the compelling content players have been asking for. In addition, we're now adding a new Bounty Pack 5 (more on that in a bit); there's a lot of amazing stuff coming to Borderlands 4, so stay tuned!"

"This update for Borderlands 4 adjusts the Horrors of Kairos Skully Legendary Grenade, adds a Class Mod drop and cooldown resets, and addresses audio balance."

Oct 23, 2025 - Horrors of Kairos!

"Hello, Vault Hunters! Can you believe we’ve already shared more than a month of mayhem together in Borderlands 4?! To celebrate, we have an update that includes widespread stability improvements, multiplayer fixes, UI polish, and a suite of quality-of-life upgrades across visuals, audio, and accessibility. It also addresses various reported issues for Vault Hunters including major balance tuning, loot systems, gear, and achievements—further refining late-game, mission flow, and overall player experience.

We will monitor the community closely for feedback and respond after the changes have settled. This measured approach to your input will provide a consistent and better experience. As a reminder, our primary goal with balance adjustments is to provide you the greatest number of viable builds.

To all PC players with NVIDIA GeForce hardware: We highly encourage you to update to the latest drivers 581.57 that were released on Tuesday, October 14, as NVIDIA has addressed a number of GPU crashes."

Oct 9, 2025

"This update for Borderlands 4 refreshes the Weekly Activities, adjusts some Legendary gear values, and addresses concerns reported by the community.

After last week’s large set of changes, we wanted to focus on some smaller gear adjustments. We’re continuing to monitor feedback to the Vault Hunter changes and identifying areas to make further improvements.

Looking forward to next week, we are planning another round of adjustments that will focus on Class Mods, Repkits, Shields, and Firmware being tuned to provide greater viability for melee builds, and account for deficiencies in other specific Vault Hunter builds. We will also address unintended interactions in certain Vault Hunter skills, and make adjustments to overperforming gear. Importantly, next week's update will include a host of improvements to stability, performance, and some highly requested quality-of-life changes!

Please restart your game to ensure that the update goes through and to prevent connection errors in matchmaking."

Oct 2, 2025
  • This update includes some additional balance changes and updates for Vault Hunters. Check the full Patch Notes list.

"Welcome to our first significant balance patch! Our high level goal for Borderlands 4 is to always provide players with the tools and means to build their perfect Vault Hunter. Through the combination of gear, Firmware, Skill and Specialization trees, we want players to experiment and craft theories, then put them to the test in combat.

For today's update, we wanted to focus on creating greater build diversity by adjusting underperforming skills. Amon in particular gets a host of adjustments to bring him closer in line with the general power level of the other Vault Hunters. Vex's summons and Rafa's melee power see adjustment to make those builds more viable in the late endgame. Finally, Harlowe has a couple tweaks to make sure Stasis is getting value for players.

Looking to the future, we're investigating stats and behaviors on Class Mods, Rep Kits, Shields, and Firmware to make sure they are providing avenues to greater build diversity. We are also planning to fix a number of unintended interactions. These exploits prevent us from creating meaningful build diversity as they trivialize content that is otherwise meant to challenge players.

We're excited about the future of Borderlands 4 and its upcoming Post-Launch Roadmap. This is just the start of an exciting year of updates and content, and we can't wait to experience it all with our community."

Sep 9, 2025 - GEARBOX BOSS CONFIRMS DAY 1 PATCH
  • Gearbox Boss Randy Pitchford confirmed on X that a Day 1 Patch will provide great support, but that PCs under specifications should manage expectations.

"The Day 1 patch does a lot! That said, the expectation for using a below min-spec machine should be that the game is unplayable... I just want everyone to have realistic expectations for performance. This is a big open AAA game and lower-end and older hardware may not perform as well as higher-end, modern PCs."
