Borderlands 4, like its predecessors, promotes co-op play to heighten the experience. Exploring Kairos, defeating bosses and raiding enemy encampments becomes more thrilling with each vault hunter using their specific skills to bolster the strategy and team synergy when engaging in combat. While the game can be played from a single-player perspective, its developed with co-op engagement in mind. This page will be updated as more information is made available.

PvE in Borderlands 4

World Design & Open Exploration

Borderlands 4 takes place on Kairos, a seamless open world with four distinct regions: the Fadefields, Terminus Range, Carcadia Burn, and the Timekeeper’s stronghold. These areas are connected without loading screens like previous entries in the series. This allows players to drive, run, or glide continuously through varied terrain. PvE is encouraged as the world contains hazards, major encounters, dynamic events, side missions, and roaming NPCs.

Collectibles & Side Activities

PvE places a strong emphasis on exploration through well-hidden collectibles, environmental interactions, and optional Vault mini-dungeons. Side quests are embedded into the world organically, not shoehorned into UX menus. World bosses and spontaneous battles appear in response to player location and progression, reinforcing the sense of living regions.

Vaults & PvE Combat Encounters

Vaults act as mini-dungeons and are structured missions featuring waves of enemies and unique bosses. Think of these as mini-raids. They'll require player cooperation to overcome the difficulty hurdles in these instances.

Vaults offer strong reward opportunities—completing them will feel more distinct from open-world skirmishes.

Split-screen Co-op

Split-screen cooperative play is available on the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of the game. The PC version does not have split screen capabilities.
