As excited as the entire gaming world is for the long-awaited release of Grand Theft Auto 6, which, by the way, has essentially been confirmed to still release on its scheduled date of November 19, a recent job listing at Rockstar Games involving "classic" games has everyone's minds thinking about what could be.

That's because the Rockstar Games of old were more than just a Grand Theft Auto machine; there was Max Payne 3, L.A. Noire, Midnight Club, Table Tennis, The Warriors, Manhunt and Bully, many of which are not on modern hardware. Oh, and of course, Grand Theft Auto IV. Also, not on modern hardware.

However, the job listing, as exciting as it is, might be a nothingburger.

Over on Rockstar Games' career site, Rockstar Australia is looking for a Senior Gameplay Programmer. The job specifics are pretty formulaic, but the one thing that caught the eye of sleuthy Internet folks is this little bit:

"Rockstar is on the lookout for a talented Senior Gameplay Programmer with a passion for game development. You will be working as part of a small but experienced team, ideally taking responsibility for one or more classic game technology areas and stepping outside your comfort zone to work in other areas as necessary."

It's that "classic game technology" bit that has everyone thinking it could mean further remasters of past titles. That said, it could reference any number of actual classic gameplay areas, like driving or open-world movement.

But What If There Were Classic Games?

OK, so let's pretend for a moment that the listing is indeed about classic titles. Which of Rockstar's vast library would this be referring to? Grand Theft Auto 3, Vice City and San Andreas are already on modern hardware, albeit not very good ports. L.A. Noire is also on modern hardware, as is Red Dead Redemption.

We know that Remedy is working on Max Payne 1 and 2 remakes, so perhaps Max Payne 3, and it's truly underrated multiplayer suite, could be part of things. Midnight Club, as cool as it would be, is almost certainly a licensing nightmare. The same goes for The Warriors.

Table Tennis was amazing, but is it worth Rockstar's time and energy? Maybe.

That leaves us with two candidates: Grand Theft Auto 4 and Bully.

There's been a longstanding rumor that GTA 4 will be ported to modern hardware, and Bully has long been a pipe dream of sorts.

So, ultimately, we'll see what happens. Never say never, but also this could be nothing in the end.
