Wizards of the Coast originally released Magic: The Gathering crossovers at a slow and steady pace, but four Universes Beyond sets are due in 2026 alone, meaning the floodgates have well and truly opened.
If you're looking for a comprehensive guide to all the Universes Beyond sets, listed in order of best-to-worst, then we've got you covered. Each set is ranked based on the originality, quality of the cards, interest in the release, and the impact of the cards on the MTG landscape (in the case of Commander/Standard set releases).
Updated on February 10, 2026, by Niall Walsh: Two years have passed since the last update for this list, so this list required a big update to introduce all the most recent Universes Beyond sets ahead of the 2026 launch of TMNT, Marvel's Super Heroes, The Hobbit, and Star Trek sets!
Warhammer 40,000
Four Commander Decks & Secret Lair Drop - 2022
Universes Beyond collection is not only the largest Universes Beyond set but also the best released so far. First up are four Warhammer 40,000 Commander decks, bringing a collective 168 brand new and completely original cards and two new mechanics, squad and ravenous. Each deck brings powerful cards to Commander, with every card featuring brand new artwork all inspired by characters, events, and factions from the tabletop minis game.
Then there are three Secret Lair Drops: Warhammer 40,000 Orks, Warhammer Age of Sigmar, and Blood Bowl. Each of these Secret Lairs features either reskinned or alternate art versions of popular cards like Aggravated Assault and a reskinned Najeela, the Blade-Blossom, as Archaeon the Everchosen.
Magic: The Gathering - These Are The Universes Beyond Sets We Want
We have some ambitious crossover ideas for MTG, and we think these sets would be a massive hit with fans of the TCG.
Avatar: The Last Airbender
Standard Set - 2025
Love it, hate it, or simply don't care about it, the Avatar MTG set surpassed all expectations upon release in 2025 and was easily one of the most impactful Universes Beyond sets ever released, with the 2025 World Championship-winning deck largely featuring cards from the set in the Izzet Lessons archetype.
For fans of Avatar, this set was a dream come true, and for those who have no attachment to the IP, it was a completely inoffensive crossover that resulted in some unique card designs that became highly desirable in the print version of the game.
The Commander offering left a little to be desired, with no pre-con decks released, and a Commander's bundle available instead.
The Lord Of The Rings: Tales Of Middle-Earth
Full Set Release, Commander Decks, And Secret Lairs - 2023
The first major set release in the Universes Beyond series, the Tales of Middle-earth set included a full set, four Commander decks, two Jumpstart versions, Secret Lair Drops, and more. The main set included 281 cards, the vast majority of which were original cards designed for the set.
Tales of Middle-earth is a straight-to-Modern release, meaning it was never legal in Standard. While the overall power level of the set was intended to be lower than that of other Modern-based releases, it still included some incredibly powerful cards like Orcish Bowmasters and The One Ring.
This crossover will expand even further later in 2026 with the addition of the Hobbit Universes Beyond set.
Final Fantasy
Full Standard Set and Commander Decks - 2025
The Final Fantasy Universes Beyond crossover ended up being a huge hit with FF and MTG fans alike, largely because it was so clear to everyone that a lot of thought and planning had gone into the releases, and in reality, it was a hugely relevant deck in Standard at the time of releease, with some powerful mono-green landfall and gruul landfall decks still floating around using a few standout cards from the set.
On the Commander front, the FF VI Revival Trance deck is a major standout as one of the best Commander pre-con decks ever released, both out of the box and with minor upgrades.
The Walking Dead
Secret Lair Drop - 2020
While originally released several months before Universes Beyond was officially announced, The Walking Dead Secret Lair Drop was brought into the Universes Beyond fold. Each card in this Universe Beyond is wholly original and features abilities that reflect the characters from the show. The Walking Dead Universes Beyond also includes five zombie tokens, each one depicting a memorable zombie from the show. This drop includes:
- Rick, Steadfast Leader
- Daryl, Hunter of Walkers
- Glenn, the Voice of Calm
- Michonne, Ruthless Survivor
- Negan, the Cold-Blooded
There is a surprising amount of power that will sneak up on your opponents if they’re not careful. Daryl, Hunter of Walkers, can generate a lot of value for players with token generation and card draw, while Glenn, the Voice of Calm, can accrue a ton of value through combat damage triggers.
Stranger Things
Secret Lair Drop - 2021
This nine-card set features eight legendary creatures, including Jim Hopper, Eleven, and Lucas. Every legendary creature comes with the friends forever ability, which functions like the partner mechanic, but only with other cards with friends forever. This is a little limiting if you’re looking to build a Commander deck around them, since it forces you only to use those pairings.
- Mind Flayer, the Shadow
- Chief Jim Hopper
- Dustin, Gadget Genius
- Eleven, the Mage
- Lucas, the Sharpshooter
- Max, the Daredevil
- Mike, the Dungeon Master
- Will the Wise
- Clue Token
Each card in the Stranger Things Universes Beyond is a unique card, only later being printed as Universes Within cards in the Streets of New Capenna edition of The List. This Universe Beyond has some really cool flavor wins. The backs of each card are actually upside down, representing the fictional world of the Upside Down, the source of terrors in Stranger Things. The Mind Flayer, the evil, all-powerful entity from Stranger Things, is also represented as being upside down on its card.
Arcane & Arcane Lands
Secret Lair Drop - 2021
A mix of reskinned cards and alternate artwork, the Arcane Secret Lair has some powerful cards. With screenshots from the show, the Arcane Secret Lair features characters like Jinx, Jayce, and Vi. The most powerful card in the Arcane Drop is Unstable Harmonics, a reskinned version of Rhystic Study. Other fun cards include Gromp, a reskinned Spore Frog, and a Path to Exile with new artwork.
- Path to Exile
- Unstable Harmonics
- Duress
- Round Two
- Denting Blows
- Counterflux
- The Hexcore
The artwork for the Arcane Lands is taken directly from the show, showing off places in both Piltover and Zaun. This Secret Lair Drop comes with one of each basic land, as well as a Command Tower that has been reskinned into Summoner’s Rift. While really cool for fans of League of Legends and of the show Arcane, there isn’t much in the way of playable cards outside of the Rhystic Study.
Street Fighter
Secret Lair Drop - 2022
Straight from the iconic fighting game comes your favorite Street Fighter characters to battle it out in Magic: The Gathering. Fan favorites like Chun-Li make an appearance, as do Dhalsim, Ryu, and Blanka. There are eight fighters in total in this Universes Beyond, representing the eight playable characters from Street Fighter 2. There’s also an extra spell included that’s a reskinned version of Lightning Bolt, reimagined as Ryu’s Hadoken.
- E. Honda, Sumo Champion
- Ryu, World Warrior
- Ken, Burning Brawler
- Blanka, Ferocious Friend
- Chun-Li, Countless Kicks
- Dhalsim, Pliable Pacifist
- Guile, Sonic Soldier
- Zangief, the Red Cyclone
The Street Fighter Universes Beyond was released as a Secret Lair Drop and coincided with the 35th Anniversary of the Street Fighter games. Each Street Fighter card comes loaded with unique abilities that feel like the moves and powers of their game counterparts. Ryu, for example, comes with the Hadouken ability, which includes the untap ability and symbol, which physically resembles the input command on an arcade fight stick that allows Ryu to fire off a Hadouken.
The flavor of each character’s card and the overall power of the set make Street Fighter one of the better Universes Beyond sets released.
Fallout
Four Commander Decks and Secret Lair Drops - 2024, 2026
The extremely popular Fallout series joins Magic: The Gathering with four Commander decks and three Secret Lair Drops. The four decks follow a different faction or characters from the games, including Caesar and his Legion, the various mutants that populate the wastes, and even your favorite companion, Dogmeat.

In 2026, a new Secret Lair drop arrived, linked to the Amazon Prime Fallout TV show, but some game-related cards were snuck into the overall release. One aspect working against Fallout for this ranking is the volume of crossover products released, as it felt like a full set was possible, but we only got Commander decks and a Secret Lair drop, followed up by this new Secret Lair drop a few years later.
Fortnite & Fortnite Lands
Secret Lair Drop - 2022
Universes Beyond brings together some of the most iconic elements of Fortnite to Magic. With cards like the Shrinking Storm (a reskin of Wrath of God), you can experience the stressfulness of a shrinking battlefield. Another powerful card, Crack the Vault, is a reskin of Grim Tutor, letting you find any card you like from your deck and add it to your hand.
- Shrinking Storm
- Supply Llama
- Dance Battle
- Battle Bus
- Crack the Vault
- Battle Royale
- The Cube
Much like the Arcane Lands, the Fortnite Lands Secret Lair features five basic lands and a reskinned Command Tower. Each of the full-art basic lands shows off a location from Fortnite, like the Steel Farm and the Slurpy Swamp. Being an entirely reskinned set, there are no original cards. There are some powerful cards to chase after, but outside of those, the Fortnite Universes Beyond is a little light compared to other Universes Beyond.
Transformers
Secret Lair Drops & The Brothers' War Packs - 2022
Transformers Universes Beyond brings 15 of your favorite Autobots and Decepticons to Magic: the Gathering. These cards can only be found in certain packs from The Brothers’ War, including Set Boosters, Collector Boosters, and The Brothers’ War Bundle.
Each Transformer card from this Universes Beyond has two printings, the regular one and the Shattered Glass Universe versions. The Shattered Glass version shows an alternate good or evil version of that character. These Shattered Glass versions can only be found in Collector Boosters at a slightly higher rate than the regular versions. The Secret Lair cards include:
|
Transformers: Optimus Prime vs. Megatron |
Transformers: Roll Out or Rise Up |
Transformers: One Shall Stand, One Shall Fall |

Unlike other Universes Beyond collections, there is no plan to release any of these cards as a Universes Within card, meaning the only way to get these cards is through The Brothers’ War packs. Each card in this Universes Beyond is double-faced, with the vehicle form on the front and the humanoid version on the back.
Dungeons & Dragons
Secret Lair Drop - 2023
Based on the Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves film, this Secret Lair Drop brought six mechanically unique cards to the game, each one based on a different character from the movie. You could get:
- Xenk, Paladin Unbroken - Rege-Jean Page
- Simon, Wild Magic Sorcerer - Justic Smith
- Forge, Neverwinter Charlatan - Hugh Grant
- Holga, Relentless Rager - Michaelle Rodriguez
- Doric, Nature's Warden / Doric, Owlbear Avenger - Sophia Lillis
- Edgin, Larcenous Lutenist - Chris Pine
This Drop also had a bonus card of Themberchaud, the chonky Dragon from the film.
Creepshow
Secret Lair Drop - 2023
Part of the Spookydrop 2023, the Creepshow Secret Lair features five reversible cards from the 1982 American horror anthology film. The original film was written by Stephen King and directed by George A Romero, of the Night of the Living Dead fame.
- Death Baron
- Noxious Ghoul
- Zombie Master
- Grimgrin, Corpse-Born
- Unholy Grotto
- Terror
Being reversible cards, the front of the card resembles a comic book cover, while featuring the name of the card, mana cost, and basic stat information. Once you flip it over, you get a more complete version, with all the stats from the front as well as the actual card text.
Assassin's Creed
Beyond Booster Set & Secret Lair Drop - 2024
A sort of mini-set within the greater Universes Beyond collection, the Assassin's Creed Universes Beyond contains 100 cards split across Beyond Boosters, a Starter Kit, a Bundle, and Collector Boosters, as well as two Secret Lairs. Beyond Boosters are a new type of Booster pack, and are not draftable but contain a mix of older cards with new artwork and original new cards designed with the Assassin's Creed games in mind.

|

Deathrender |
|
Edward, Jackdaw Captain |
Whispersilk Cloak |
The first Secret Lair drop, Lethal Legends, features some of the most popular main characters from across the games as reskinned versions of popular legendary creatures, while Da Vinci's Designs takes some of the best equipment and makes them look as if Leonardo himself sketched them out.
Doctor Who
Four Commander Decks & Secret Lair - 2023
The Universes Beyond Doctor Who release brought with it four very strong Commander decks, each one designed around several iterations of The Doctor and their villains. The main release also came with three Secret Lairs: Dalek Lands, Weeping Angels, and Regeneration.
|

Angel of the Ruins |

The Fifteenth Doctor |
While the Commander decks focused on the first Thirteen Doctors, the reveal of the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Doctors had not yet been announced to fans, so they were released as a Secret Lair separately.
Evil Dead
Secret Lair Drop - 2023
The cult classic horror film joined the Magic: The Gathering Universes Beyond collection with five reskinned cards. Each card represents either a character in the film, like Ash, Destined Survivor, depicting the legendary actor Bruce Campbell, or Field of the Dead being reworked into the little cabin deep in the woods where the film takes place.
- Ash, Destined Survivor
- Destroy the Dead
- Knowby's Incantation
- Linda, Kandarian Queen
- Cabin of the Dead
- Zombie token
There is tons of flavor text on these cards, like Knowby's Incantation, which has the ritual's incantation in the flavor text.
The Princess Bride
Secret Lair Drop - 2023
A mix of reskinned cards and alternate arts, The Princess Bride Universes Beyond collection brings nine cards depicting both characters from the film, like Princess Buttercup and Westly, as well as some of the most iconic scenes, including the Battle of Wits between Vizzini and the Dread Pirate Roberts.
- Buttercup, Provincial Princess
- Silence
- Battle of Wits
- Vizzini, Criminal Mastermind
- Rodents of Unusual Size
- Westley, Dread Pirate Roberts
- Fezzik, Rhyming Giant
- Inigo, Avenging Swordsman
- Miracle Max, Unemployed
Each card has flavor text that are quotes from the film, like Inigo Montoya's classic, "Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."
Jurassic Park / Jurassic World
Secret Lair Drop & The Lost Caverns Of Ixalan Packs - 2023
This Universes Beyond collection is split across multiple releases. You can find a ton of mechanically unique cards in booster packs of The Lost Caverns of Ixalan. These cards include some very cool Dinosaurs like Blue, Loyal Raptor and Indominus Rex, Alpha, as well as a few powerful spells in Permission Denied and Don't Move.

The two Secret Lair Drops took some of the most well-known Dinosaurs from the films and turned them into reskinned versions of classic Magic cards, while the Dr. Ian Malcolm Secret Lair is one dedicated exclusively to Jeff Goldblum's character from the films.
Tomb Raider
Secret Lair Drop - 2023
Coming exclusively as a Secret Lair Drop, the Tomb Raider Universes Beyond focuses on the remake games of the long-running Tomb Raider series. The main draw of this Drop is Lara Croft, Tomb Raider herself. This mechanically unique card focuses on legendary artifacts and lands, returning them from your graveyard and exiling them with a discovery counter, a new type of counter that comes with this card. You can then play cards from exile if they have one of these counters.
- Lara Croft, Tomb Raider
- Heart of the Explorer // The Lost Valley
- Storms of Yamatai
- The Grim Whisper
- Totec's Spear
- Kitezh, Sunken City
- Treasure token
The drop has yet to make its way to a Universes Within version, so the only way you can play with the Lara Croft card is if you got it from this drop.
Clue
Secret Lair Drop - 2024
A rather interesting entry to the Universes Beyond series, the Ravnica: Clue Edition is a multiplayer variant of the game, providing you and three to four friends to get together and try to solve a mystery while also playing a game of Magic.
- Guildmage Boddy
- Headliner Scarlett
- Commander Mustard
- Apothecary White
- Emissary Green
- Senator Peacock
- Mastermind Plum
All the characters from the original Clue game, including Mrs. Peacock and Colonel Mustard, all make their way into the game, this time getting some fantastic reimaginings as if they were characters from Ravnica. Each of these Clue characters is a legendary creature and a mechanically unique card, complementing a slew of other mechanically unique cards mixed into the set.
Hatsune Miku
Secret Lair Drop - 2024
The incredibly popular Vocaloid Hatsune Miku joins Magic: The Gathering's extended universe with three Secret Lair Drops. Artwork for these Drops contains artwork from fans from all across the world, so each card has a unique style and feel to it.

There is a fourth Secret Lair Drop scheduled to release sometime in 2024, but the details on that release are scant.
All of these Drops feature either alternate art reprints or reskins of cards; no mechanically unique cards are found among the Drops. Interestingly, in the Electric Entourage set, there's a Vocaloid named KAITO, which is a reskinned borderless version of Jace, Unraveler of Secrets, and not Kaito Shizuki, the actual character from the Magic universe.
Monty Python
Secret Lair Drop - 2024
The iconic humor of Monty Python and the Holy Grail might not be your first thought when you picture a Universes Beyond set, but these two Secret Lair Drops feature a total of nine reskinned cards, each one depicting a different scene from the film.

Perhaps the deepest cut of any Secret Lair or Universes Beyond is the inclusion of Tim the Enchanter, which is a reskinned version of Prodigal Sorcerer. This card was nicknamed Tim since its original artwork resembled the character Tim the Enchanter from the film.
Ghostbusters
Secret Lair Drop - 2024
Ten reskinned cards make up the two Ghostbusters Universes Beyond Secret Lair Drops based on the classic comedy movie starring Bill Murry, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson, and Sigourney Weaver.

Curiously, the Ghostbusters Secret Lairs don't actually showcase any of these actors. Instead, the Slimer features five cards based on the gluttonous green ghost, while The Real Ghostbusters Drop is based on the cartoon.
Child's Play
Secret Lair Drop - 2024
Horror fans got another Universes Beyond with the release of the Child's Play Secret Lair Drop. This horror movie franchise focuses on Chucky, a doll who becomes possessed by the soul of a serial killer after a voodoo ritual transfers his soul into the doll to escape death.
- Chucky
- Sorry Jack ..., Chucky's Back
- Tiffany, Bride of Chucky
- Friend to the End
- Play Pals Factory
This five-card Secret Lair features reskinned cards and includes two legendary creatures: Chucky, who is a reskinned version of Kardur, Doomscourge, and then one of Tiffany, who is a reskinned Barragoth, Bloodsky Sire.
SpongeBob SquarePants
Secret Lair - 2025
Sadly, this SpongeBob-themed Secret Lair contained no original cards, and while the artwork was fun, it felt more like a cash-grab meme release than something that would have any impact on Magic in the long-term.

Marvel's Spider-Man
Full Standard Set - 2025
Where do we even begin with the Spider-Man set? This disaster of a release didn't even make it onto MTG Arena due to licensing issues, leading to mass confusion within the community. On top of this, what was supposed to be a smaller set became a full Standard release, leading to cards that felt rushed and uninspiring, while also not synergizing well with existing Standard sets or operating well as a standalone product.
The straw that broke the camel's back was the fact that this set ended up pushing back the release of Lorwyn Eclipsed, a hugely anticipated original MTG set, and it came in the middle of a major ramp-up in new products, leaving players feeling burnt out and slighted by the expectation to invest in new products so often.
Let's just hope the next Marvel crossover, due mid-2026, appeals to players much more and is just generally a higher-quality product.
Magic: The Gathering – The Best Preconstructed Commander Decks
We take a look at the very best MTG precon decks for the Commander format.
