'The Unknown Resonant' mission automatically unlocks as you explore the Unknown in Control Resonant. It will also most likely be the last Resonant mission you complete in the game and defeating its boss will grant you full access to Dylan's abilities. Just be warned - while I've done my best, the following guide does contain small spoilers. With that in mind, let's take a look at 'The Unknown Resonant' walkthrough for Control Resonant.

Control Resonant The Unknown Resonant walkthrough

You'll most likely encounter 'The Unknown Resonant' mission as you travel through the Unknown itself while progressing through both the 'Sever the Hedron Links' main mission and 'Pope's Research' side story. The mission itself will properly begin when you land on the island containing the Field Office and I recommend completing it then and there. Partly because it makes sense story-wise, partly because you may find the ability it unlocks useful in the late-game fights.

With that out of the way, here's an overview of every objective in 'The Unknown Resonant' mission:

  1. Get to the Rangers.
  2. Advance with the rangers.
  3. Disrupt the pattern.
  4. Advance with the rangers.
  5. Open the gate for the rangers.
  6. Advance with the rangers.
  7. Look for a way around the gate.
  8. Survive the ambush.
  9. Advance with the rangers.
  10. Kill the Resonant.

1. Get to the Rangers.

As I mentioned, this mission will automatically begin when you first land on the island containing the Field Office with your first task being finding the rangers. To do so, head through the blue doors to the left of the respawn point. This will send you into a fight with the Hiss, but you definitely know how to take care of them by now.

With the Hiss dead, have a chat with the rangers and you'll find yourself becoming their backup.

2. Advance with the rangers.

From this point on you'll be accompanying the rangers on their mission. This means it's up to you to do the majority of the work both in the terms of clearing obstacles and killing enemies. The good news is that the rangers can't die during this segment (not like they're really doing much anyways), so you don't have to worry about keeping them alive.

When you're ready, head through the double doors directly in front of the rangers to encounter your first obstacle.

3. Disrupt the pattern.

If you've been running about completing every World Feat that comes your way, then you probably already know how to disrupt the pattern. If you haven't then what you need to do is hit the object that doesn't match the pattern. In the screenshot below you can see that this is the booth floating slightly higher than the others.

I recommend hitting the out-of-place object once before waiting for the pattern to change. This will allow you to spot which object to hit next, because it may change, avoiding any chance of you accidentally resetting the puzzle.

Once the pattern has been destroyed, you'll be able to go through the next set of double doors.

4. Advance with the rangers.

Now we're back to venturing forward with the rangers! After going through the double doors, take the first right and defeat the Hiss waiting for you. With them dead, you'll be able to reach the next road only to discover that the next gate requires some electricity to be opened.

5. Open the gate for the rangers.

As you'll know, opening the gate requires finding some electricity for the Power Core. The question is - where is the electricity? Well to find it, you need to solve a short navigational puzzle!

From the gate, head right to reach a bus which is parked over the edge of the patterned section of the road. Now you need to jump down into the area below. Do not Shift as this will only lead you to another set of locked doors.

Once there, you'll be able to spot a set of opened doors. Head towards those powers and then Shift onto the wall near them. This will allow you to go through the opened doors to reach a resource chest and a Power Core with electricity. (If you want to do some extra exploring, heading up the other patterned wall in this area will take you to a second resource chest.)

Here comes the tricky part and, to make it easier to follow, I'm gonna do it in a numbered list:

  1. Take the electricity from the Power Core.
  2. Use Reach on the patterned platform directly in front of you.
  3. From there, jump / float across to the next patterned platform. This involves going through a patterned ring that can close up on you. When you're close enough to the next platform, it is possible to use Reach on it.
  4. Use Reach onto the road below.
  5. Place the electricity into the nearby Power Core. This isn't the Power Core it needs to be in, but it will reset the electricity timer giving you more time for the following steps.

  7. Take the electricity out of the Power Core.
  8. Look up and use Reach on the platform above you.
  9. From the platform, jump over the wall and to the ground below.
  10. Run along this road and use Reach.
  11. Now Rush back to the original Power Core and place the electricity inside to open the doors for the rangers.

If you're having trouble with this puzzle, then it's a good idea to unlock the 'Extended Rush' talent as this will greatly increase the amount of time Rush lasts for.

6. Advance with the rangers.

Head through the gate and you'll find yourself in a fight with the Hiss once again. Take care of them using whatever means you prefer before heading through the opened set of doors. (The ones beneath the sign saying 'Avaliable'.)

Inside this building you'll find a set of stairs which you need to go up to reach the road on the other side. Follow this road along and you'll come to yet another locked gate. I'm starting to think something doesn't want us to reach our destination…

7. Look for a way around the gate.

It's time to properly leave the rangers behind for a while, because they don't have supernatural jumping powers. Climb atop the nearby lorry and you'll have enough height to Reach over to the roof with the creepy patterned billboard. (I dislike that billboard a lot.)

From there, follow the roofs around to your left and, when the time comes, jump across to the buildings opposite. Next, jump across to the section of road you'll see to your left. It's the one with a series of green scaffolding visible from the roof you're currently on.

Now all you have to do is go down this road until you can jump across to the Field Office by taking a road to your left. Just be prepared for when you're roughly in the middle of the area outside of the Field Office.

8. Survive the ambush.

When you arrive at the Field Office, however, you'll quickly find yourself besieged by an onslaught of different enemies. This is a rather long fight, so use all of your abilities and try to use your surroundings as cover. At some point, the rangers will make their way through the gate but, again, they don't really do much.

9. Advance with the rangers.

Once all of the enemies are dead, take some time to explore this version of the Field Office. What you'll definitely want to pick up is the Power Upgrade Point sitting on this side of the gate which barred the rangers' way.

When you're ready, head into the Field Office and unlock the Patterned Field Office fast travel point. (There's also some collectibles on the desk which are worth picking up.) It's at this point I highly recommend visiting The Gap to perform any upgrades and spend any Talent Points you might have.

After that, join the rangers in the elevator and hit the button to go up because they really don't want to do any work.

10. Kill the Resonant.

When you leave the elevator, you'll find yourself facing the Unknown Resonant. If you're looking for some advice on how to take down this boss, then check out my The Co-Director boss strategy.

After defeating this Resonant, you'll earn the Command ability. This allows you to turn an enemy into an ally, but does have a metre gauge. How much of the gauge is used depends on the strength of the enemy and you'll have to wait for the gauge to be refilled after using it. You most likely also don't have full access to the gauge upon unlocking the Command ability, with additional parts being unlocked either via the Talent tree or by reaching specific levels in certain areas.

For completing 'The Unknown Resonant' mission, you'll earn 4,000 Source, one Reset Item, the Untapped 1996 Commemorative Coin, one Talent Point and some Unknown XP.

If this is the last Resonant you had to defeat, which it should be if you've been following my Control Resonant walkthrough, then you'll also unlock the Casual Outfit: Resonants. 'Notes: Defeat The Resonant Entities' will also be marked as complete.

Congratulations on completing 'The Unknown Resonant' mission! You can now get back to destroying those Hedron links or, if you fancy doing something a little bit different, why not hunt down the taxi locations and dog locations.
