After what sounds like a successful launch for Mafia: The Old Country, we currently have no official word on what's next for the Mafia series. Diehard fans have been piecing together the clues as of late, though, and they think all signs point to a sequel for The Old Country, and then a Mafia 2 remake after it.
What Might Be Next For Mafia?
Those diehard fans are the minds behind the YouTube channel, Mafia Game Videos. In their latest video, they presented the evidence that one of the next Mafia games will build on the foundation set by The Old Country. Not only did Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick comment on its commercial success, but shortly after its launch, Isabella actor Cariana Conti claimed the studio behind it, Hangar 13, had already been given the green light to make its next Mafia game.
In addition to that, Mafia Game Videos highlights an interview with the most recent Mafia game's director, Alex Cox, in which they refer to The Old Country as a "soft reboot" for the series. Not only does that suggest the next Old Country game is likely already in development, but that the odds of there being a Mafia 4 anytime soon are probably pretty slim.
Why A Mafia 2 Remake Makes Sense
The second suggestion, that the other Mafia game on the series timeline right now is a second remake, further compounds the belief that there are currently no plans for a new game set after the events of Mafia 3. Mafia Game Videos notes that Hangar 13 devs were shown recording audio for World War 2 era weapons in a behind-the-scenes video. Unless The Old Country is about to experience a significant timeskip (which really wouldn't make much sense), that work wasn't being done for its potential Old Country sequel.
A Mafia 2 remake, on the other hand, would make perfect sense since that game is set during that latter half of the 1940s, directly after the end of WW2. The channel also hypothesizes that the legacy weapons from Mafia 2 that you can find in The Old Country might have been an early test to see how the assets performed in the new engine, ready for work on a Mafia 2 remake to begin.
This is all astute Mafia fans picking up pieces that are dotted around and seeing if they fit together, for now, but those pieces do all seem to fit. Above all else, since the last two Mafia releases we got were a remake of the first game and The Old Country, and they both seemingly sold well, the next logical steps would be a remake of Mafia 2 and an Old Country sequel.
