We knew about Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed: Black Flag remake for ages before it was formally unveiled. And its formal unveiling was little more than a blog post. A leaker recently claimed that there's plenty of new content in the game, and all eyes had been on April 16 (as of this writing, that's today!) for real details.
Well, here we are. And we have them. It's not a media blowout that you might have been hoping for, but it does contain a release date: July 9, 2026. All things considered, Edward Kenway's big comeback is practically right around the corner.
Raise Your Flag
Insider Gaming reports that certain media and content creators got the chance to behold a full 30 minutes of Resynced today. Their source is peerless, to be clear—it's themselves. While TheGamer didn't get the sneak peek, we can at least say with absolute confidence that our fellow journalism sites aren't going to randomly lie about this stuff. So, there's your proof, and it's pristine.
"While we won’t spoil what the game has in store, we can say it’s been completely reworked with a bunch of new content and updates, and honestly, it looks awesome. But one thing was made clear: despite the rumors and rumblings, Black Flag Resynced is not an RPG." -Insider Gaming's Tom Henderson
That "new content" sure does sync (heh) with what we've previously heard, and I, for one, am stoked to see what it's all about. Black Flag is a spectacular video game, but I don't think its core narrative beats are so beloved as to cause an eruption of fandom critique if things go all weird-like a la Final Fantasy 7 Remake (which, despite all its eccentricities, is still a two-for-two holy grail of ongoing remakes). Give me all the new stuff you've got, Ubisoft, because this is an era that can be mined for so much more.
What about that not-an-RPG part, though? I'm a little lost on this. Henderson explains that the presentation revealed the following line: “This remains a solo adventure and character-driven experience. It is not an RPG." I guess 'adventure' is doing heavy lifting here? As in, it's more of an adventure-genre game than an RPG, as was the case with the original Black Flag? Because I'm looking at "solo adventure and character-driven experience," and honestly, that doesn't sound like a rebuttal against the RPG genre...
But what I'm going to assume is that Henderson and the other lucky folks at the event saw no damage numbers, no minute stat-raising equipment, nor any of the other fare that's become so prolific in many of the more recent Assassin's Creed offerings. As a lover of all things RPG, I'm still glad. That's probably not what Black Flag ought to be.
Apparently, we'll hear loads more next week, and in a more open environment. So, stay tuned.
