Hangar 13 had to go back to the drawing board after Mafia 3, releasing the far more contained and linear Mafia: The Old Country earlier this summer, almost a decade after the launch of the last Mafia game. The Old Country has been well-received by Mafia fans, so much so that it sounds like the studio behind the series has already made plans for what's next.
Actor Cariana Conti, who plays Isabella in The Old Country, broke the news during an appearance on a Bubbly Nuggets livestream. A viewer asked if there would be more Mafia games in the future, to which Conti replied yes, confirming that a new Mafia project had already been greenlit at Hangar 13, implying work is either already underway or development will begin soon.
Mafia Fans Think We're Returning To A Classic Setting After The Old Country's Ending
The ending offers a couple of possibilities.
The Old Country's Isabella Might Have Just Told Us Something We Weren't Supposed To Know
Considering how well received The Old Country has been, and the success of the Mafia series as a whole despite its hiccups, it's not exactly a shock that 2K would want more of it. However, neither it nor Hangar 13 would have wanted an actor on a stream to be the one to break the news. The studios probably won't like the news being out there this soon, either, as they'd prefer the focus to remain on The Old Country for a little while longer, since the newest game in the series isn't even two months old yet.
The leading theories regarding which direction Hangar 13 might be headed when it comes to its next Mafia game are an Old Country sequel, or a remake of one of the original games. Since Conti knows about the next game, an Old Country sequel makes a lot of sense. She might know the game has been greenlit due to being asked to return to reprise the role of Isabella in The Old Country 2.
The only thing that makes me think the next game might not be connected to The Old Country is Conti adding that she's "so, so happy for them", perhaps suggesting that she won't be involved with whatever Hangar 13 has planned. The greenlit game she's referencing could be a Mafia 2 remake. While the first game's Definitive Edition was a full remake of the original, the Definitive Edition of Mafia 2 that launched in the same year was a remaster.
If the unannounced project is a Mafia 2 remake, it might mean the project was given the go-ahead a while ago, and development has been ongoing for a while. If the next game is an Old Country sequel, we could return to 1920s Sicily before the end of the decade, as the latest game reportedly took three years to make. Much better than that nine-year gap between Mafia 3 and The Old Country, but as always with news like this, don't count on anything until it's officially announced.
