Lilac and Gooseberries

Lilac and Gooseberries is the first main quest in White Orchard, a major opening region in The Witcher 3. This walkthrough will guide you through White Orchard's opening areas, and include tips for combat and getting information from the local inn.

Lilac and Gooseberries Walkthrough

After the cutscene ends, Geralt awakens from his dream to find Vesimir stoking their campfire. He can choose to either discuss the dream he had of Kaer Morhen or get back on the road in search for Yennefer.

Before the two can mount their horses and ride, a group of Ghouls attacks their camp. Using what he learned in the tutorial, Geralt must defeat these grotesque enemies.

Use either Aard or Igni on Ghouls to stun them or set them aflame before moving in to attack with your sword. Eliminate the Necrophages, then mount your horse and follow Vesimir onto the road to White Orchard.

Quest Item
Before leaving your campsite, be sure to pick up the crystalized raven skull from the nearby bushes - use your Witcher Senses to locate it.
If you missed it at this time, you can come back to get it before you battle the Griffin.

Follow Vesimir down the hill and through the ransacked village until you reach the inn at White Orchard. Once inside, talk to the innkeeper about Yennefer. After some unruly locals enter the tavern, leave Vesimir to tend to his wound and talk to the merchant near the front door of the inn.

After learning that Yennefer has traveled to the Nilfgaardian garrison, leave the inn to collect your horse. Before making it to the horse, you’ll be accosted by the thugs from inside. You can use Axii to stun one of them at the start of the fight, thereby reducing the number of opponents you will face by one. After eliminating the threat, get on your horse and head north towards the garrisoned soldiers.

Upon arriving at the ruined castle, talk to the guards outside the gate then head inside and speak with the garrison commander. You can inquire about his requisitioning of supplies from the locals, or cut straight to the point of finding Yennefer.

SECONDARY QUEST
Before proceeding in Lilac and Gooseberries, Geralt must first find and slay the Griffin in the quest The Beast of White Orchard.

Once after you've killed the Griffin and collected the bounty, return to the White Orchard inn and talk to Vesimir. The two witchers will be forced into a fight, regardless of which conversation paths Geralt chooses. Once the majority of opponents have been defeated, a cutscene will trigger and the mission will end, starting The Incident at White Orchard.
