Kevin Lau shared thisA few months ago, Liam Horne, Kartik Talwar and I announced a scholarship in the name of the late Pearl Sullivan at last year's Hack the North. Pearl was the Dean of Engineering at Waterloo and took a massive bet on us when others wouldn't. Without her, Hack the North wouldn't exist. This #scholarship is our attempt at honouring her memory and spirit, and to pass it on to future generations. Applications are open until February 1, 2022 for the fall 2022 term award! In that time I got married, moved, welcomed two kiddos, built teams I’m deeply proud of, and signed a few deals along the way. From autonomous trucking and the early days of Uber Freight, to NYC taxis and EVs, and most recently helping build Uber’s autonomous future across robotaxis, delivery robots, drones, and air taxis. Thank you to the many, many colleagues, friends, and partners who made it all possible. Especially those willing to take a chance on an early idea and see where it could go. Uber is an incredibly special place. I couldn’t be more proud to have been a part of it, or more excited about what comes next for the team. It has been a privilege ❤️

Kevin Lau liked thisKevin Lau liked thisIt's my sister's birthday today! I would not be a founder without Jane Zhang. For most of my 20s, my plan was to climb the product management ladder. I liked that this path had clear steps and let me build on something I was already good at. Meanwhile, I was spending all my free time trying to solve my own dating problem. I ended up hiring 4 dating coaches, taking 2 dating classes, and studying tons of podcasts and books. I created my own system for finding love. Jane kept telling me to pay attention to what I was naturally drawn to. I knew what I really cared about, and I should go work on it. She was right. I realized I'm most passionate about helping people find exceptional partners. It had been such a challenge for me, and I wanted to make it easier for others. Her encouragement gave me the confidence to turn my passion project into a career. Happy birthday Jane! Here's us at her birthday picnic last weekend :) P.S. On top of her day job as a software engineer at Databricks, Jane is a gifted writer. She’s published monthly essays on AI, human relationships, and connection since 2024. Hot take: The smallest unit capable of reaching PMF is now one person. AI didn’t remove work. It compressed execution into systems. Which means founders who stay closest to users now win faster than those who “scale early.” PMF is no longer something you scale into. It’s something you design for.
