Thank you to Kerry Wang at Accel for hosting us and to every alumnus who showed up, asked sharp questions, and made the evening what it was. The panel brought together six Harvard alumni building at the frontier of tech: - Charlie Cheever, Co-Founder of Quora and Expo - Will Bryk, CEO and Co-Founder of Exa - Florian Juengermann, CTO and Co-Founder of Listen Labs - Rachael Fuller, Tech Lead at Replit - Zara Zhang, AI product builder and former investment analyst at GGV Capital - Max Lu, Head of Research at Decagon - Traci Gadow, Director of Product and Experience at Zoox The conversations were honest, specific, and grounded. Themes ranged from opinionated product design and the rise of the product engineer to what it takes to build foundational infrastructure in the AI era. We also recorded video and audio from the evening and will be sharing more from the panel soon. None of this happens without the people behind the scenes. Jessica Li reposted thisJessica Li reposted thisSomething I didn't think I'd be pondering last evening: Do the Zoox autonomous vehicles look more like toasters or bread? 🍞 I played a small role in hosting Harvard Alumni in Tech's Engineering Leaders at Accel moderated by the brilliant Jessica Li. Six founders and engineering leaders — Charlie Cheever, Florian Juengermann, Max Lu, Rachael Fuller, Zara Zhang, and Traci Gadow — and it led to most engaged audience Q&A! A few things that stuck with me: Charlie (Quora, Expo): In a world flooded with AI-generated content, tastemakers become more important, not less. Zara (ByteDance): Have a genuine opinion about what needs to be different. That's the whole job. Max (Decagon): The real unlock in AI isn't bigger models. It's smaller, faster ones that actually follow instructions. Florian (Listen Labs): Deliberately expose yourself to hard things — his example was quantum theory. Not to become a quantum physicist, but to build the mental muscle for complexity. Rachael (Replit): Giving someone who's never driven a car the keys to a Ferrari can be terrifying. The experience design has to meet people where they are. Traci (Zoox): The team lovingly calls their robotaxi "the toaster." The design philosophy is to make the user feel smart, not overwhelmed. That's great product thinking at any scale. Rooms like this are my favorite part of the job.

LMK if they're actually helpful & please give thoughts! This is for founders I advise, startups post-training their first custom models, students wondering how RL works in the real world, etc. This blog answers the question of: "My eval scores look good but the model is doing something weird in production. What do I do?" And my answer is always the same: have you actually looked at your trajectories? Not the dashboard. Not the aggregate metrics. The actual traces. Step by step. What the model saw, what it did, why it probably did it. Most people haven't. And honestly, we can all tell. I got tired of repeating myself. So I wrote it down. This is Part 1 of a mini-series I'm calling RL Pet Peeves. It's opinionated. It's a rant. But it's a rant with tangible takeaways, tutorials, and prompt libraries you can use. Open benchmarks are one of the most important levers for advancing AI safely and responsibly—but the academic and open-source teams driving them often hit resource constraints, especially in the face of the exponentially expanding complexity of what tomorrow’s benchmarks need to cover. That's why we're launching Open Benchmarks Grants: a $3M commitment from Snorkel AI, with support from Hugging Face, Prime Intellect, Together AI, Factory HQ, Harbor, and PyTorch to back the teams building benchmarks that define new vectors of progress for agentic AI. The next wave of benchmarks must close the gap across three core dimensions: environment complexity, autonomy horizon, and output complexity. This grant provides funding, expert data development support, and research collaboration to support those innovating in these areas (and more we haven’t thought of!). Hot take: if you have users and revenue, you should tell investors that. You’d be shocked by how many decks I see that seem like totally philosophical idea-stage decks, then when I ask the founder about traction, they give me numbers that are nowhere to be found in the deck. No traction is too small. One customer is worlds different from zero customers. If you have any customer at all that uses your product, likes it, and/or pays for it, you’re ahead of so many early-stage founders raising on nothing but a dream.
