Lois Lane, Lana Lang, Linda Lee...and Lex Luthor, Lori Lemaris, Lara Lor-Van, Lucy Lane, Lena Luthor, Luma Lynai, Lyla Lerrol, Lesla-Lar...
"Strange! I just realized that Lex Luthor has the same initials as Lana Lang! LL! — Will Luthor become a great scientist? Or... a criminal?"
A way to connect characters, places, or ideas in a work of fiction is to give them a letter or syllable that ties them together. It might be ascribed to a family name or surname, but generally serves as a more general and subtle form of Theme Naming and Theme Initials.

Anime & Manga
- ARIA: (Nearly) All of the cast have names beginning with "A", though if we consider human cast only, then it's EVERY! SINGLE! NAMED! CHARACTER! The apprentices trio (Akari, Aika, Alice), the teachers trio (Alicia, Akira, Athena), the traghetto trio (Ayumi, Atora, Anzu), Ai, Grandma Akino, Akatsuki, Ayanokohji (Woody for friends), Albert, Anno the postman.

- Bleach:
- The Espada all have two of the same letters in their names (Starrk; Baraggan; Harribel; Nelliel; Ulquiorra; Nnoitra; Grimmjow; ; Luppi; Zommari; Szayelaporro; Aaroniero; Yammy;).
- A couple of the Numeros and the Fraccion share the same double-letter motif (i.e. Aisslinger Wernarr; Charlotte Chuuhlhourne; Abirama Redder; Ggio Vega).
- Case Closed: There was case where the victims have names that follow a musical motif and were killed in that order. (C -> D -> E -> F -> G -> A, a.k.a do re mi fa son la) The last person, B a.k.a si, was the killer who intended to commit suicide after finishing the A person, as the initial letter of his name Haga, H, is the German version of "si"; but his suicide was interrupted.
- Dragon Ball: The male members of the Son family all have names that start with 'Go': Son Goku and his sons Son Gohan and Son Goten. There's also Grandpa Son Gohan, Goku's deceased adoptive (grand)father and his son Gohan's namesake.
- Most, if not all of the villains on GaoGaiGar have names that start with the letter P.
- JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Jonathan, Joseph, Jotaro, Josuke, Giorno, Jolyne, Johnny, Josuke, Jodio. The main protagonists of the Joestar family have their first/last names with a "Jo" sound, as per the title reference.
- Naruto:
- The main branch of the Hyuga Clan naturally has names that start with the letter H: Hisashi, Hizashi, Hinata, and Hanabi Hyuga. Neji is the exception to indicate his status as a branch family member.
- There's also the trio of Ino, Shikamaru, and Chouji whose dads' names also start with the same two syllables (Inoichi, Shikaku, and Chouza) as part of their shared theme of being named after Hanafuda cards.
- This likely applies to the Aburame Clan as well, given the named members (not counting Torune, which is probably an alias) are Shino, Shibi, and Shikuro. Really, it seems the only clans that don't do this are the Uchiha, Senju, and Inuzuka.
- One Piece: Several characters possess the "Will of D", marked by having "D." as a middle initial. They don't know what it stands for, but they all have superhuman strength, willpower and no fear of death. These include the main character, Monkey D. Luffy.
- The Promised Neverland: The major farms all have two-word names that begin with the letter G: Grace Field, Glory Bell, Grand Valley, and Goodwill Ridge. There is also a fifth location that follows this pattern: Goldy Pond, a sanctuary for humans to remain safe from the demons, which, upon its creator's death, quickly fell to the demons and became, like the farms, just another place for demons to corral up humans to eat.
- Rave Master: The Tower of Din arc presents an interesting example: if you added the prefix 'Ma' to all of the non-human characters' names, you'd get things like Mallet (Let), Multiangle (L'tiangle), Mothership (Zharshippe), etc.
- Voltes V: Most of the male Boazanian nobles follow a pattern of naming where their names and with "-l" - Heinel, Jangal, Zuhl, Zambajil, Oral, Gohl, Doyle and Gurul. A few of these names are also puns - Heinel is a pun on "your highness
", Jangal is a pun on "Jingo
", Gohl is a pun on "Gaul
" and Gurul is a pun on "Kurultai
".
Asian Animation
- Happy Friends: The Supermen's Chinese names all follow the theme of "__心超人" ("__xin chaoren"), with the blank representing a different Chinese character that forms with "xin" to make a word describing that particular Superman - Kaixin Chaoren (Happy S.), Tianxin Chaoren (Sweet S.), Huaxin Chaoren (Smart S., Chinese name Flowering Heart Superman), Chuxin Chaoren (Careless S.), and Xiaoxin Chaoren (Careful S.). This name scheme is applied to the Supermen besides the ones that form the main team as well.
- Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf: The goats' Chinese names are all tied together with the Chinese character 羊 (yang), which means "sheep" or "goat".
Comic Books
- The Sandman (1989): All of the Endless' names all start with D: Destiny, Death, Dream, Desire, Despair, Destruction and Delirium (formerly Delight). Unlike most examples, however, people are aware of this theme; at least three individuals have pretended to be Endless by coming up with pseudonyms that begin with D.
- Superman:
- Superman's connection to the initials L.L. Started as a coincidence in The Golden Age of Comic Books before becoming a running joke. These include but are not limited to: Lois Lane, Linda Lee, Lex Luthor, Lana Lang, Lucy Lane, Lena Luthor, Lori Lemaris, Luma Lynai, Lyla Lerrol, Lara Lor-Van, Lesla-Lar, Letitia Lerner, and Lupe Leocadio. One direct lampshade even lumped Lightning Lad in there, with Supes apparently forgetting his friend has a real name.
- The Supergirl From Krypton (1959): Lampshaded when Kara Zor-El picks her Earth name: "Linda Lee", and Superman wonders why he is always running into people with initials L.L.:
Supergirl: While you were gone, I used my super-hearing and heard many Earth-girls' names! I thought of a good one for myself... Linda Lee! How's that?
Superman: Er... As good as any! (thinking) Lana Lang was my girlfriend when I was Superboy, and Lois Lane replaced her when I became Superman! By sheer coincidence, she picked the same initials... L. L.! - How Luthor Met Superboy'': Lampshaded at the end, when Superboy wonders just why Lex Luthor has the same initials as Lana Lang.
- Superman's Return to Krypton: Lampshaded by Superman when he meets a beautiful woman, and guesses her initials before being formally introduced to Lyla Lerrol.
- Swamp Thing: Several previous hosts to Plant Elementals have names that sound similar to Alec Holland (who, due to a Stable Time Loop, is the template they're all based on). The original Swamp Thing was Alex Olsen, and before him there was Alf Oldland (Jack-in-the-Green) and Alice Huston (Lady Jane). Between Alex and Alec were Albert Höllerer (the Heap), Aaron Hayley (Swamp Thing II) and Alan Hallman (Swamp Thing III). And when the Sprout was looking for a host, it attempted to bond with Alan Bolland, Gary Holland, Alden Hollandaise and Alan Helstrom.
Film — Animated
- Turning Red: Mei, Ming and Miriam all start with M highlighting the connection between the three characters.
Film — Live-Action
- The Karate Kid:
- The Karate Kid (1984): With the exception of Dutch, most of the major Cobra Kai students are known by nicknames ending in a double letter and a "y" (Jimmy, Bobby, Tommy, and Johnny Lawrence). To contrast, Ali introduces herself as "Ali with an I", Daniel is pointedly not called Danny and of course there's The Mentor and Big Good Mr. Miyagi.
- Part III introduces Terry Silver, the co-founder of Cobra Kai, who refers to Sensei John Kreese as "Johnny" (the aforementioned Johnny Lawrence is nowhere to be seen). Terry even calls Daniel "Danny" during and after the latter's brief time with Cobra Kai, marking him as the only character in the entire franchise to do so.
- The Sequel Series Cobra Kai plays with this with the character of Miguel - his name has six letters and ends in -el, like Daniel before him, marking him as the next Karate Kid. However, his mother often calls him "Miggy", tying into the aforementioned Cobra Kai naming scheme (which is otherwise largely abandoned, with the students having more varied names this time around).
- The Season One finale see's Johnny's top student's Miguel and Eli go against Daniels student Robby, likely to represent the Swapped Roles of having Johnny as The Protagonist and Daniel taking a more antagonistic role. However in Season Two things take a step back with John Kreese returning to Cobra Kai, demonstrated by Eli's rejection of his own name in favor of the nickname Johnny gave him, Hawk and Tory Nichols joining the Dojo, while Miyagi-Do gains new student Demetri Alexopoulos.
- The Muppets (2011): The Moopets take the names of the Muppets they are a knockoff of and fit an "oo" into them — hence, Kermoot (Kermit), Foozie (Fozzie), Miss Poogy (Miss Piggy), Roowlf (Rowlf), Janooce (Janice), and Animool (Animal).
Gamebooks
- In the Lone Wolf series, Joe Dever is very fond of giving evil characters, creatures and places names with double As in them, probably because it looks and sounds harsh and foreign to English speakers. This nuance was likely lost when the books were translated into languages such as Dutch, Norwegian and German, in which double As are a lot more common than in English.
Literature
By author
- Dean Koontz: The villain of The Good Guy uses different names with the initials R. K., likely as a Shout-Out to Stephen King's Randall Flagg.
- Michael Moorcock has a lot of significant characters with the initials J.C., most famously Jerry Cornelius and Jhary-a-Conel.
- Stephen King: A particular villain uses a variety of names, most with the initials R.F. ("Randall Flagg" being his most famous version). Oddly, though, his real name turns out to be totally different.
By work
- A Certain Magical Index: Academy City's Hard Science things all have codenames starting with Hs, and the other letters relate to its function:
- HsPS-15: A Powered Suit, likely the 15th version.
- HsSSV-01: Likely, Hard Science Specialty Suit ,Which are Specialized Variants of Powered Suits, Vehicle 01 - A supersonic bike. ... SSV could also stand for Super Sonic Vehicle.
- HsAFH-11: Hard Science Air Force Helicopter? Or Attack Force? It's assuredly a helicopter...
- HsB: Bomber plane.
- HsF: Fighter plane.
- HsWAV: War Armored Vehicle, presumably. Shiosai from Old Testament Volume 13 says that it's made for War.
- City of Bones: "JC" is a significant pair of initials. It's for Clary's false father Jonathan Clark, her not really dead brother Jonathan Christopher, the latter name of which serves as the basis for Jace's name which pushed up the drama when he and Clary thought they were siblings.
- Deverry: Characters often (but not always) have similar names to their previous incarnations. For instance, Jill has been Brangwen, Gweniver, Branoic and most recently Branna, while Rhodry has been Maddyn, Maer and Meddry (interestingly, the incarnations we first meet them in don't seem to be examples - until the final book reveals their earliest recorded incarnations were called Hwilli and Rhodorix). Nevyn spent most of the time period covered by the books as unaging, but in the most recent sequence has been reborn as Neb.
- The Eminence in Shadow: Cid has not one but three letter motifs thanks to the many secret identities he assumed throughout the series:
- Most of the names begin with an "S" somewhere in their alias (Shadow, Jimina Seinen, John Smith, Suzuki Hope and Stylish Bandit Slayer), even his given name can be pronounced and have an alternate spelling of "Sid".
- Another less common letter that their alias starts with is "J" (Jimina Seinen, John Smith, Jack the Ripper and Jean Pierre).
- The English translation caused some aliases to start with the letter "M" (Mundane Mann, Mysterious Youngman, Minoru and Mysterious Man C/the Mastermind)
- Flowers in the Attic:
- The Dollanganger children all have names that start with 'C': Christopher, Cathy, Cory and Carrie. Their parents are Chris Sr. and Corrine.
- In the book's sequel Petals on the Wind, Cathy names her son Jory, the "ory" for her brother Cory, but with a "J" for Jory's late father Julian.
- Harry Potter:
- The website Pottermore gives Mr. Ollivander's first name as "Garrick," the son of Gervaise, the son of Gerbold, descended from the great wandmaker Geraint...noticing a pattern?
- Also, almost all of the named members of the Holyhead Harpies (an all-female Quidditch team) have a first or last name (or both) that start with the letter G.
- Invasion of Kzarch: The Kzarchians all have apostrophes in their last names; which they insist be pronounced. No, no-one else can tell the difference.
- Each chapter of Mary Poppins From A To Z begins by introducing a specific letter of the alphabet, then tells a short story containing an exorbitant amount of words beginning with that letter.
- Pit Dragon Chronicles: Most of the characters have a "double K" in their name (like Jakken or Akki). This is explicitly explained in the text; people with a double-K are slaves or descended from slaves.
- Ranger's Apprentice: Defied; author John Flanagan said he's tried to avert this. He'll read back through part of a manuscript and realize he gave a bunch of characters names starting with the same letter, so he'll go back and change some of the names.
- A Song of Ice and Fire:
- Several members of House Lannister have names beginning with "Ty-": Tywin Lannister, his father Tytos, his brother Tygett, nis nephew Tyrek, and his son Tyrion. Strangely enough Tywin's first son is called Jaime.
- Likewise, several members of House Greyjoy have names ending with the "-on" syllabe: Lord Balon Greyjoy, his brothers Euron, Victarion, Urrigon and Aeron, his half-brothers Harlon and Quenton, his sons Maron and Theon. There's also a relative called Dagon Greyjoy.
- The names of House Targaryen are usually some variation of the original three founders: Aegon, Visenya, and Rhaenys, using either the first or second half of the name. Daenerys's son with Drogo is named Rhaego, combining both Targaryen and Dothraki elements.
- The Kettlebacks all have names starting with Os- Oswell, Osmund, Osfryd, and Osney.
- The Southern Reach Trilogy: All three books all have one-word titles starting with the letter A: Annihilation, Authority, Acceptance. Additionally, the omnibus that collects the entire trilogy in one book is titled Area X.
- The Thrawn Trilogy: Clones' names are distinguished from the original by doubling a vowel. The two most prominent are Joruus C'baoth and Luuke Skywalker.
- The Wolf Chronicles: All regular wolves' names have a double letter in them - Kaala, Rissa, Trevegg, Ázzuen, etc. The Greatwolves' names, however, do not.
- The Years Of Rice And Salt: The story follows three major characters who reincarnate many times over the course of many centuries. Each incarnation has the same initials.
Live Action TV
- Babylon Five:
- Minbari make frequent use of "Lenn", as in Delenn, Lennier, Lennon and Lennan.
- Babylon 5 also seems quite fond of names that begin with "Dra-", such as Drazi, Draal and Drakh.
- The show's creator was fond of giving his protagonists the same initials as him.
- In Charmed, the women in the central Halliwell family all have names that start with P. The grandmother was Penelope, the mother was Patricia, and the daughters are Prue (Prudence), Piper, Phoebe, and Paige.
- Earlier versions of Star Trek actually had this as a canon for Vulcan males — Spock, Sarek, Sybok, etc. Females got more choice, though initially all of them were some variant of T'(x). (T'lar, T'Pau...)
- Tuvok in Voyager is an exception, though.
- The Expanded Universe attempts to cover for this by saying that Surak inspired five-letter names that either start with S or end with K. Furthermore, what with the shortage of Sxxxk names, it's a status symbol. Sarek's house is very prominent, so they still get to use them.
- Even when the name doesn't end in K, there will often be a K in it. "Sarek, child of Solkar, child of Skon."
- The Making Of Star Trek reprints a half-serious memo written by Bob Justman
suggesting that all Vulcan male names should begin with SP and end with K. At one point it was said that the "S" and "T" prefixes served more or less the same function as "Mr.", "Mrs.", "Miss", etc. The Completely Useless Star Trek Encyclopedia suggests that Tuvok is a hermaphrodite, whereas Saavik's parents really wanted a boy.
- Originally, at least in TOS, all the Klingon names began with K (Kor, Kang, etc.). Then Worf came along and that all went out the window.
- Also in Voyager, Talaxians (a race native to the Delta Quadrant) typically include an X in all proper nouns - as seen with not just names of people (e.g. Neelix) but also places (e.g. their homeworld Talax and its moon Rinax).
- Mexican writer, actor, director, comedian, humorist, songwriter, poet, and philosopher Roberto Gómez Bolaños, best known as Chespirito, was rather fond of this trope. He was the man behind the incredibly popular El Chavo del ocho and El Chapulín Colorado television shows, portraying the eponymous protagonists in both. Other characters created by him are la Chilindrina, el Chanfle, el Chómpiras, el Dr. Chapatín, la Chimoltrufia, Chaparrón Bonaparte and los Chifladitos. Words and phrases frequently employed in his shows include “¡Me lleva el chanfle!”, “¡Se me chispotéo!”, "¡Chusma, chusma!", “La vieja chancluda”, "Huesito, huesito de chabacano", “"¡Matanga, dijo la changa!”, “El Chipote Chillón”, “Chiquitolina”, and “Chiripiorca”. Can you tell a pattern? (Interestingly, Chespirito once stated it was not intentional at first, but started using this pattern on purpose once it was pointed out to him)
- In Dollhouse, the names of actives follow the letters of the NATO phonetic alphabet
(So far we've seen Alpha, Charlie, Echo, Mike, November, Sierra, Tango, Victor, and Whiskey). Note that these names are artificial codes, however; for example, Echo's "real" name is Caroline, one of the Novembers is Madeline, Sierra is Priya, etc.
- The actives in a second house are named after Greek Gods.
- About 99 percent of the evil immortals in Highlander have names that begin with a K, a hard C, a Ch, or, rarely, a Q.(Quentin Barnes in the series, though Quentin in the animated series is a hero, not a villain.)
- There are an overwhelming amount of characters in Merlin whose names start with an A, G or M. Plenty of these are taken from the source material, but just as many are original characters, making it feel like less of a coincidence:
- A: Arthur, Agravaine, Aithusa, Alice, Alator, Alvarr, Alined, Annis, Aulfric, Anhora, Aglaine, Aredian
- G: Guinevere, Gaius, Gwaine, Gilli, Geoffrey, Godwyn, Grunhilda, Grettir
- M: Merlin, Morgana, Morgause, Mordred, Mithian, Myror
- Power Rangers had a string of girls with K-names for its first nine seasons: Pink Rangers Kimberly, Kat, Cassie (different letter, same sound), Kendrix, and Karone; then it shifted to Yellow Rangers for Kelsey and Katie.
- Lois & Clark: Lois Lane and Lex Luthor once discussed name ideas for the children they might have had. All Lex's ideas included the letter "X" somewhere.
- The Ericksen family in How I Met Your Mother strictly follows this, with males having names that start with Mar (Marvin Sr., Marvin, Jr., Marcus, Marshall and Marvin W.) and females ending with Y (Judy, Ashley, Lily and Daisy). Of course there's also Ted Mosby and The Mother, whose name is revelaed to be Tracy McConnel.
- Odd Squad: Every single agent who works at Odd Squad (with the exception of the Xs and [[spoiler Todd]]) has a name starting with O. The O motif runs pretty deep, as not only does the organization name start with it, but the topmost department is called the Big Office. The title for the head of all Odd Squad is called the Big O. In the Odd Squad academy, it's implied the highest grade is O. They have their own Pseudolympics called the O games. Aside from that, there's the aforementioned Xs, an elite task force within Odd Squad who all have X names instead.
Toys
- BIONICLE bad guys almost always have an "ak" sound in their names: MAKuta, rAHKshi, BohrOK, PirAKa, and so on. This is partly because the names need to sound foreign and hard K sounds are easy targets.
- A better example is that each tribe of Matoran has a syllable representing its element. For example the fire Matoran are the "Ta-Matoran", a Toa of Fire is Tahu, and fire Bohrok are Tahnok. Rahkshi and Visorak also reference it even though they don't have elemental affiliations; continuing the previous example red Rahkshi are Turahk (close enough) and the red Visorak breed are Vohtahrak.
- Squishmallows: The witches released in 2020 have names that begin with a W to create alliteration: Wexla, Whitney, Wilma, and Winnie.
Video Games
- In Balatro, the Boss Blinds encountered in the first seven antes and after the eighth are symbolized by letters of the Phoenician alphabet.
- Delivery Missions in Billy vs. SNAKEMAN are based on the 11 Ds, a collection of stats that all begin with D, like Drive, Deliciousness, and
DancingD-Speed. - In BoxBoy!, Qbby, Qucy, Qudy, and the Qbabies have a name that starts with Q. There's an additional theme where the third letter in their names corresponds to a sequential letter in the alphabet: B (Qbby), C (Qucy), and D (Qudy); while the Qbabies fit the theme (A), they break the sequence by being introduced after everyone else.
- Bug! had the 6 levels, four of which ended with -ia (Insectia, Reptilia, Splot, Quaria, Burrubs and Arachnia).
- The names of the three main characters in The Combatribes all begin with the letter "B" (Berserker, Bullova, and Blitz).
- Donkey Kong Country
- There has yet to be a Kremling whose name does not include the letter "K", usually as the first letter in a homophone of a word that contains a "C". (ex. K. Rool, Kritter, Krusha, Klaptrap, Kalypso, Kopter, etc.)
- For the Kongs, we have: Donkey, Diddy, Dixie, Cranky, Funky, Candy, Kiddy, Chunky, Tiny, Lanky, Swanky, Wrinkly and Bluster.
- In Don't Starve, almost all playable characters start with W. For example, Wilson, Willow, Wolfgang, Wendy, Wickerbottom, WX-78, Woodie, and Wes. Even the apparent exception Maxwell can count if you consider that his past name, as revealed in a set of trailer-based puzzles, is William Carter.
- Fahrenheit gave most of the main characters a K or C in their name. Markus, Carla, and Lucas Kane.
- In Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, giant obstacles have names that end in "-us": The striped hammer catapult Big Yeetus, the spiked turnstile Thicc Bonkus, the swaying jinglebell Ringus Dingus, and the spring platform Slingus Flingus.
- Final Fantasy:
- In Final Fantasy IX we have Quina Quen a member of the Qu tribe, other members including its master Quale and Vivi's 'Grandfather' Quan.
- In Final Fantasy X, the Besaid Aurochs all have a double letter in their name. Wakka, Botta, Keepa, Jassu, Letty, Datto...and Tidus (if you're using his Canon Name, at least). Considering Tidus was originally from the Zanarkand Abes and not the Besaid Aurochs, he might not really count. Double vowel/consonant does, however, apply to all Aurochs in the Japanese version, including Tidus.
- In Friday Night Funkin', the Girlfriend's parents (Daddy Dearest and Mommy Mearest) have alliterative titles that end in "-est".
- In Gungrave, a number of Syndicate members have names starting with B: Brandon Heat, Big Daddy, Bear Walken, Bunji Kugashira, even Beyond the Grave.
- In Homeworld, just about every name of relevance has a K in it. Kharak, their homeworld, Kadeshi, the home of their insane brothers, Kushan, the name of the exiles, Khar Selim and Khar Toba, the names of a support vessel and the generation ship that brought them to Kharak respectively, and Karan Sjet, the voice and mind of the Mothership.
- Kingdom Hearts:
- All members of Organization XIII have an X in their names. Initiation into the Organization actually requires an X to be added to the letters of the member's previous name. Dream Drop Distance reveals that the X isn't just a letter, either — it's the Recusant's Sigil, a mark of Xehanort's ownership over them, which he uses to track them (among many others) for his true Evil Plan.
- While probably unintentional from his part, all known people that Luxu has possessed have the same three letters at the start of their names. So we have Brain (allegedly), Bragi, and Braig/Xigbar.
- Having been around for several decades, The Legend of Zelda have established a naming convention for its many, many enemies, meaning that some enemies whose name share certain syllables also share some characteristic.
- Stal-: Since stal can be seen as a shortening of skeletal, Stal enemies are Dem Bones: Stalfos, Stalnox, Stallord etc.
- -blin: Monsters whose name ends with this are Cannon Fodder Pigman, or at least some of the easier enemies in their games: Bokoblin, Moblin, Horriblin etc.
- -nak (-nakku) or Knuckle: Especially prevalent in Japanese, enemies whose name ends with nak or Knuckle are armored knights: Iron Knuckle, Rebonak, Stalnak (renamed Dark Stalfos in English) etc.
- Mol-/Mor- (moru-): Enemies with this prefix are digging experts found in the desert, many of them being boss-level: Molgera, Molduga, Morgryph etc.
- Project M is a fan mod of Super Smash Bros. Brawl designed to play as an ideally much better-balanced version of Super Smash Bros. Melee, hence the "'M'". As of Demo 2.5, a modified Pokémon Stadium 2 stylized with a Master Ball (a special Poké Ball decorated with the letter "M") motif is included.
- Radical Rappelling goes out of its way to use as many words that start with an "R" as possible. This includes the game's title, the characters you play as (Rip and Roxy), almost everything they say, what they get to interact with, player ranks and names of the locations.
- In Ring Fit Adventure, the Four Masters each have names beginning with A: Andma, Armando, Allegra, and Abdonis.
- Tales of Legendia has a lot of terms that have an "er-i-es" theme on their syllables. The two species are the Ferines and Orerines; the leader of the Ferines is the Merines, who hears the voice of Nerifes, the god of the ocean, and each Ferines has a set of magical wings called a teriques. There's also a passing mention of a place called "Mount Zeriques."
- Curiously, in TinkerQuarry, the first three bosses have names starting with S, and ending with A. Staya, Sera, and Stella.
- In the Warcraft universe, the color and gender of a dragon usually determines the end of their name. Red dragons tend to have names ending in "-asz" or "-asza", blue dragons ending in "-gos" or "-gosa", etc. This has caused some debate when a visibly female bronze dragon character had a name that ends in the masculine "-ormu" (rather than "-ormi").
Visual Novels
- In Higurashi: When They Cry, the Sonozaki family always designates a successor to their headship with a kanji character that includes the radical for "demon." Likewise, if they lose the right to succeed to the headship, as Mion's mother, Akane, did, their name is rewritten with a different character that doesn't have the "demon" radical.
- In its successor series, Umineko: When They Cry, all of Kinzo's servants who come from the Gospel House orphanage are given a new name as a servant that starts with at least one character from their original first name and then ends with the kanji for "noise," pronounced "on" or possibly "ne".
Webcomics
- In 8-Bit Theater, we see that all Pronteran children are given names beginning with the letter P, such as Penny, Peter, Paul, and Pjoe.
- In Gunnerkrigg Court, the names of the three most important locations in Antimony's life all start with G: the titular court, Good Hope Hospital, and Gillitie Wood. Don't know if that's just a coincidence or what.
- Everyday Heroes:
- Mr. Mighty and his two brothers are Marion, Michael, and Morrison.
- Also, the neighborhood moms are Jane, Joan, Jenny, Ginny, June, Jan, and Jin; the single dads are John and Jean (French).
- All of the FreakAngels have a 'k' or hard 'c' sound in their name.
- Homestuck's main four share initials with their ectobiological ancestors; all of the Egbert-Harley-Crocker-English genetic clusterfuck have names beginning with J.
- Both cherubs have strong connection to the letter U: their handles' acronyms are 'UU' and 'uu' , both of their UnUsUal typing qUirks MAKE HEAVY uSAGE OF THIS PARTICuLAR LETTER, they use emoticons like :u, u_u and tUMUt (which is supposed to be a frowning figure flipping the bird with both hands) and Caliborn even has Opiuchus for a sign (that is, a tilde superimposed on the letter U).
- Except for the above two handles, all chumhandles and trolltags can be abbreviated to two of the four following letters: G C A T. This is supposed to represent the four genetic bases, Guanine, Cytozine, Adenine and Thymine. Later in the story, when God Cat debuts, its name is simply shortened to GCat.
- The Carapacians refer to themselves with various titles. These titles can change if the Carpacian goes through a major life change, but will always retain the same pair of initials: Warweary Villein became Wizardly Vassal became Wayward Vagabond became Wastelandic Vindicator, Parcel Mistress became Peregrine Mendicant became Prospitian Monarch, White Queen became Windswept Questant, etc.
- The Girl Posse in Alice and the Nightmare has all their names ending in "-ie", leading one commenter to ask if they've ganged up this way on purpose.
Western Animation
- In Avatar: The Last Airbender, the Fire Nation loves their Z's: Sozin, Azulon, Ozai, Azula, Zuko, Kuzon, and Zhao, although that's not a hard z like the others. The Water Tribe, on the other hand, is all about K's: Kana left Pakku and had Kya who married Hakoda and had Sokka and Katara. Yue (Water) and Iroh (Fire) are two exceptions, though.
- With the exception of Azula, every blood member of the Fire Nation's royal family has an O in their name: Sozin, Azulon, Iroh, Ozai, and Zuko. All of these names mentioned have either been Fire Lords or in Iroh's case intended to become Fire Lord. The chain is broken in Legend of Korra when it's revealed the Fire Lord succeeding Zuko is his daughter named Izumi.
- The Powerpuff Girls all three of the girls' names start with B; Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup. There's also the Rowdyruff Boys (Brick, Boomer, and Butch) and Powerpunk Girls (Berserk, Brat, and Brute). This is lampshaded in the movie, where it's revealed that Professor Utonium literally gave Buttercup her name because "it also begins with a B".
- South Park has the McCormick siblings, whose names all start with "K"; Kevin, Kenny, and Karen.
- The Little Mermaid (1989): King Triton's seven daughters have names that start with "A".

In "Origins Part 2", Zak counted himself as "Captain" so that they would have seven C's. His full name is also later revealed to be Conrad Zacharie Storm, which fits the motif anyway.
Real Life
- The Duggar family, who gave all 19 of their kids names starting with J. This led to names like Jinger, pronounced "ginger". This started out by coincidence, then when the Duggars realized the trend, they did not want to have a child who was the odd one out and then they kept having kids... However, that does not explain why they used Jinger before they used Jennifer (to Jennifer Duggar's future relief).
- Former US President Lyndon B. Johnson liked his initials so much that not only did he enjoy being known solely by them (LBJ), but married Claudia, who self-titled herself "Lady Bird," later becoming Lady Bird Johnson, and named his two daughters Lynda Bird Johnson, and Luci Baines Johnson. If that wasn't enough, during office, he also had a beagle named - you guessed it - Little Beagle Johnson. Among other pets he blessed with his initials.
- Robert Rodriguez' children Rocket, Racer, Rebel, Rogue, and Rhiannon.
- Sylvester Stallone's sons all have names beginning with S. When he named his daughter Sistine Rose, his mother kidded him for naming his child after a place he'd never been to just because he liked the sound.
- Prince Michael Jackson, Paris Michael Jackson (girl), and Prince Michael Jackson II (AKA "Blanket" AKA "OMGDONTDROPHIMYOUCRAZYMANCHILD"). Guy ran out of ideas pretty quickly.
- Kris Kardashian and her daughters Kim, Khloe, Kourtney... their brother's name is Robert, after his dad. Their step-parent is Olympian trans-woman Caitlyn Jenner (seriously), and her sons Burt, Brandon, and Brody continue a motif set by her deadname, "Bruce." Their sister is Casey, and everyone's half-sisters are Kylie and Kendall (phew!).
- In the Germanic tribes back in ancient and viking times, all the sons in a well-to-do family normally had names starting with the same letter as their father's. This is because the rhyming schemes of their poetry was based on how words start, not on how they end, and the most highly regarded verse form has a rhyme every four syllables! So, if you want a nice, rhyming song on everything you achieved in life, it is certainly helpful if your sons have names that already rhyme.
- The German noble house of Reuss took this one step further: every single son has been named Heinrich (Henry) for centuries, originally to show its devotion to a medieval king of that name. In fact, the house was known as the "house of Heinrichs" before it gained the name Reuss (after a small principality in Thuringia). There are two lines (elder and younger), both number their sons separately by order of birth, one starting anew with I when the number LXXXXIX (99) is reached, the other starting fresh at the beginning of each century. In everyday conversation, the various Heinrichs also keep each other apart by using different diminutives (Heinz, Heini) or foreign forms (Henri, Harry) of the name.
- Bach named two of his sons Johann and a daughter Johanna.
- Although that is likely to be at least partly coincidental. It was just that people used fewer first names in the 18th century, and children were also frequently named after their godparents. "Johann/Johannes" in particular was one of the most commonly used ones, both in Protestant and Catholic regions.
- All kings of Prussia were named Frederick (Friedrich) and/or William (Wilhelm), starting with Frederick I (formerly elector Frederick III of Brandenburg, son of Frederick William, the Great Elector) and ending with William II (whose crown prince was also called William). Besides three Fredericks and two Williams, there were four kings called Frederick William.

AC-47 Spooky, AC-119G Shadow and AC-119K Stinger, and the AC-130H Spectre and AC-130U Spooky II, and the AC-27J Stinger II.
- An odd unintentional one. Many people who work on Atop the Fourth Wall have a name starting with L. There's Lewis Louvhaug, who took on the name Linkara and whose bum character is named Lester (a theme naming for another time). Then there's Lewis's father who has played several characters that would be too old for Linkara's range (Teens to early thirties) who is credited as L. Lovhaug. Then there's his ex-girlfriend (Iron) Liz, the actor for female characters. And apparently Liz from another world is called Lita Liz instead of Iron Liz.
- After the Seven, all cars made by Lotus have had names starting with "E". (Elan, Elite, Europa, Esprit, etc.) The Carlton was a modified Vauxhall.
- Ford Motor Company did this for a little while with the both the Ford (Focus, Five Hundred, Fusion, Flex) and Mercury (Montego, Mariner, Mountaineer, Milan) brands.
- The Laeisz shipping line of Hamburg, which continued to use sailing vessels after most others discontinued them, was better known as the Flying P Line after its practice of giving all its ships names beginning with the letter P (the first was the Pudel (= poodle)). The line's windjammers included the five-mast Preussen, the tragically sunk Pamir, its sister ship, and the Padua (seen in the film Die Große Freiheit Nummer 7). The Passat (= tradewind) is now a museum ship in Travemünde, while the Peking can be seen at South Street Seaport in New York.
- Don't forget Pommern at Mariehamn, Finland.
- Padua is afloat and well. Her name is today Kruzhenstern and she is a schoolship of the Russian Navy.
- Don't forget Pommern at Mariehamn, Finland.
- Many classes of warships of the Royal Navy were given names beginning with a particular letter, thus in World War Two it had 'D' and 'E' class cruisers (the latter consisted of just two ships, the Emerald and the Enterprise), destroyer classes going from 'A' to 'Z' (leaving out X and Y, but having 'V' and 'W' twice, the first ones built during World War I) and 'S', 'T' and 'U' class submarines.
- A few of their nuclear platforms had names starting with 'V'. The Royal Navy has the four Vanguard class submarines (Vanguard, Victorious, Vigilant, and Vengeance) and the RAF had the V-bombers (Vulcan, Victor, and Valiant).

- Lyndale Avenue is a major north-south street in Minneapolis. The street just west of it is Aldrich Avenue, after which comes Bryant, then Colfax, then Dupont . . . all the way through to Zenith, after which the pattern starts again with Abbott. Even though Minneapolis itself doesn't extend past France (the F in the second alphabet) and strict grid plans become less common as you go farther out, it's easy to spot the pattern for at least six alphabets' worth of streets, well into the suburbs.
- Martial artist Dan Inosanto has a martial artist daughter whose name, Diana Lee Inosanto, also begins with D.
- Pedro Pascal's full name, José Pedro Balmaceda Pascal, follows a precedent for first names beginning with J; his paternal grandfather and father are both also named José Pedro, and his older sister Javiera. His nickname follows the lead of his father and grandfather, both also known as Pepe, for nicknames beginning with P.
