As your friendly neighborhood Admin Team, the gang here at TVTropes HQ is always working to improve the site.
Many of those improvements begin with suggestions posted right here, on the Community Wishlist. Is there a feature you really want on TVTropes? Post it.
Is there something we could be doing better? We want to know. Do you think we look fat in these pants? We were totally afraid of that. See a bug? Report it.
Important things to know:
- We're all about that content-creation life! The top contenders for our attention are ideas that'll create more content, like the video uploading feature, or speed up launching new pages. On the flip side, design or layout tweaks won't be our top priority.
- Help us dig through the goldmine of old wishlist items! If you have an old request gathering dust or spot one you're totally on board with, give it a bump and a like. There's a treasure trove of 6+ years' worth of ideas just waiting to be rediscovered. Items without enough love may not make the cut and will be closed.
- Was your wishlist item locked up without an explanation? It was most likely disapproved or just too big of a task versus the benefit it would ultimately have. Time is precious, and we want to focus on updates with the biggest bang for the buck. Don't be discouraged though! We appreciate every idea and we're always listening.
Make a Tech Wish:
openrename images in uploader
when i upload an image intended for a page, i like it to have a descriptive name rather than something like img_0001, but renaming images on mobile is a pain and a half. it would be a lot easier if i could rename it specifically for the site. there wouldn't have to be a whole step in the upload for it since i expect most people rename their images before upload; just show the filename during the final adjustments/cropping step and let you click on it to change it. it could either not allow/notify when entering duplicate names or allow them and append numbers after like normal.
openHave a draft opinion for reviews
My suggestion that there should be a draft button to save your unfinished review, especially if they’re going to be very long.
closed Content Warning on sensitive trope page.
Multiple tropes, such as Driven to Suicide and Sexual Harassment and Rape Tropes, can be sensitive topics for a lot of tropers. It may be a lot of work, but would it be possible to implement a content warning before entering the page, like You Tube?
Edited by jkim152openOn the "related" tab, distinguish indexes from "ordinary" wicks.
On the "related" tab of a page, currently redirects are all collected in their own box. This is useful for a number of purposes, not least when a page has just been moved and you need to change wicks. Especially when many wicks need updating, it's important to get to the redirects first.
However, it's also important to update indexes. Currently, once a page has been moved through the page mover, there's no way
to find out where it was indexed after the fact. Therefore, the related tab ought to also distinguish indexes somehow.
closed Uploading videos from mobile devices
I was surprised that I only can upload videos from desktop and not from my tablet. Please add this feature, thanks😃
Edited by FeliciaCM2009closed Make post edit timestamp adjust to timezones
pretty simple, make the text that shows up clarifying when a post was edited adjust to the timezone of the person viewing it.
closed Wikiword / pothole preview
Notice how on wikipedia, when you hover your cursor over a wiki word, it shows tiny preview of what the term entails? This would be neat on Tv Tropes too. For the sake of brevity, the wick could show the Laconic description, if the trope/YMMV/trivia has one.
I don't think it would deter Wiki Walks much.
workingTroper video list
Since we're now crediting videos to whoever uploaded them, I think it'd be nice if we had a feature similar to edit history and avatar gallery viewing that let us see a list of (non-rejected) videos that a troper has uploaded. It'd certainly be easier than having to comb through the site trying to figure out what videos they have up.
closed I want the delete video button back
I accidentally uploaded a video that exceeds the time limit and no longer describes the trope for Disaster Dominoes, but the delete button is missing!
workingMake the Archive/ namespace restricted to mods and engineers
Lately, we've been having issues of tropers misusing the Archive/ namespace to store things like video links and examples, presumably because they misunderstand what our Archive/ namespace is for. I don't actually see much purpose in allowing people to just create a page in that namespace to begin with; it's specifically meant for preserving our own wiki content, with pages that are locked and never updated. Logically, it shouldn't be open for anyone to just create a page under, because any valid pages would need community consensus and a mod-lock anyway.
openRandom avatar button
A "random" button for avatar galleries to allow people with large galleries to make use of their lesser-used avatars.
workingShow password button
It's standard for most websites to have an eye button in register and login forms to verify what you're typing the password field, so thinking if TVT should also have a password visibility toggle.
workingAsk The Tropers - updated medium list?
The drop-down medium list for new ATT posts doesn't include options for Theatre or TabletopGame - can we get these added?
working[Video] Support subtitles
I uploaded a video recently that had speaking in a voice other than English. While the video itself contains embedded subtitles with translated text, the site's video player does not, meaning that viewers would not be able to understand the video.
Supporting embedded subtitles would allow users to switch between subtitles if they need, or if available, turn them on for English-language videos, if they are hard of hearing, and require subtitles to understand the video.
openA way to fix the "Why isn't there a page for X" queries
You know the ones. The ones that ask "why isn't there a TV Tropes page for <thing here>" only for people to respond with "because nobody's made it yet". I propose adding one extra line to the description on ATT to read as follows:
So that the relevant part of the description reads like this:
... Making queries asking why there isn't a TV Tropes page for <insert thing here>. It's because nobody's made it yet, and just because nobody's made it yet doesn't mean you can't.
closed Daily Video Submission Cap
At the Engineer/Mod chat, there was agreement that we'd like to have a cap on how many clips a single troper could upload each day. This is to not only avoid the backlog swelling thanks to a single troper's uploads (which is actually a very common issue), but to also help us deal with the work and trope spam we sometimes get. Ultimately, it would help us prevent burnout, discourage people from flooding a page with videos, and make daily moderation easier. It being a daily cap, it also wouldn't prevent the troper from still uploading a lot of videos; they'd just need to pace themselves differently, which shouldn't be a problem because some people post multiple a day either way.
openVideo downloader and editor features
Why not download and edit it at the comfort of the TV Trope with new features that have you do just that. You can just import the URL of videos and edit videos directly on the site without the hassle of going to different websites and going through their processes and go back to this site to upload it. It would save alot of time and patience just to have those features here for the tropers convenience.
workingList of video comments
Now that videos have comments, it can help with moderation to have a page that filters them per user, like with queries and TLP replies.

We now have the ability to send a message to watchers when a page is linked to an Image Pickin' thread.
Let's extend this to the Cut List so that anyone watching a page is immediately warned when it's submitted to be cut.
Either this could be 'from' the person raising the cut request, or it could be from the same address used to send welcome messages to new tropers.
Either way, this would increase engagement for the cut discussion and help us ensure we have full context (and plenty of scope for folk to challenge) before it's cut.
