Problem

In the Diff pane, clicking an "N unmodified lines" separator in the git views (Changes, Uncommitted, or a commit from the Commits menu) loads the file from the server but shows no lines. It should show the hidden lines. This is #27171.

It happens to a file you expand from collapsed, and files start collapsed by default (Settings → Diffs & pull requests → Default diff file state). With that setting on Expanded, the separators work on main, which may be why the issue didn't reproduce. Turn diffs aren't affected, because they don't load file contents.

To reproduce on main: change two lines far apart in a long file, open the Diff pane on Changes, expand the file, and click the "N unmodified lines" separator between the changes. Nothing appears and nothing is logged.

Change

@pierre/diffs loads the full files into the parsed diff it was given. It applies the result only if that same object is still the item's diff (pendingHydratedDiff.expectedDiff === fileDiff in the virtualized file diff). DiffPanel parses the selected patch again whenever it recomputes it. Expanding a collapsed file publishes a new item version that carries a fresh parse, while Pierre's FileDiff keeps the old one because both have the same cacheKey. From then on every load for that file fails the identity check and is dropped.

Scope and approval

Fixes #27171. The issue is labeled bug and needs-triage. A maintainer couldn't reproduce it on main, and the reporter followed up with a recording. I'm submitting this as a small fix for an obvious bug: the separators are an existing control that does nothing when clicked, and this restores what they already do when a file starts expanded. The change is one cache around the existing getRenderablePatch call in DiffPanel, plus a test. It doesn't change any other behavior.

#28056 fixes a different failure in the same flow (a crash when files change while you expand them). With #28056 applied and without this change, the separators still do nothing. I didn't find another PR for #27171.

Verification

Web dev server (vp run dev) in Chromium on macOS, against a scratch repo with two local commits and an uncommitted change. Steps: open the Diff pane on Changes, expand src/values.ts, click "43 unmodified lines".

Before (main) After (this PR)
before: the separator still reads 43 unmodified lines after the click after: lines 14 to 41 are shown

Also checked in the same app:

  • Click Refresh diff while the file is collapsed, then expand it and click the separator: the lines appear.
  • Edit the file so the patch changes, refresh, expand: the new line shows and the separators expand.
  • Uncommitted: expanding upward shows the file from line 1.
  • A commit from the Commits menu: its separators expand.
  • Latest turn still renders its diff.
  • With Default diff file state set to Expanded, the separators work on main too, which confirms the collapsed-to-expanded trigger.
  • The bug also reproduces in the T3 Code (Beta) desktop app 0.1.5 on macOS.

Tests: a new case in DiffPanel.browser.test.tsx renders a collapsed file, refetches the same patch, expands all files, and expects the viewer to receive the same parsed file object. It fails on main. The refetch step is what the compiler reordering alone fails: without it, the reordering passes the case. vp run check:changed passes, including the React Compiler coverage check.

Not checked: the fix in the desktop app, which runs this same web UI. Large diffs that load file by file (useReviewFilePatches) and the PR Code tab cache their parses per query result, so a refetch there may hit the same problem. They aren't changed here.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code (Claude Opus 5.5)

Pierre loads the full file into the parsed diff it was given and keeps the
result only if that same object is still the item's diff. DiffPanel parsed the
selected patch again whenever it re-rendered or refetched, so expanding a
collapsed file handed Pierre a new object, and every "N unmodified lines"
click after that loaded the contents and dropped them.

Keep the last few parses keyed by the patch text and its parse options, so the
same patch keeps the same parsed files.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 039944c

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — The diff pane now reuses recent parsed patches so expanded context survives rerenders and unchanged refetches. This is a bounded, in-memory presentation change with no persistent data or product-default changes.

Walkthrough

DiffPanel now caches parsed renderable patches by cache scope, parsing options, and patch text. Browser tests verify that refreshing with the same patch preserves the parsed file object when files are expanded.

Explanation

The title "fix(web): Diff pane expands unmodified lines again" matches the main change. The PR fixes the "N unmodified lines" separators in the Diff pane so they show hidden lines after a collapsed file is expanded. The title is a conventional commit, short, and specific. The fix caches parsed patches in DiffPanel, which the title does not name, but the title covers the primary user-facing change.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template. It has Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections. The Problem section gives reproduction steps and the expected behavior. The Change section explains the root cause (identity check on the parsed diff object) and why the fix is a cache in DiffPanel. The Scope section links issue #27171 and explains why it qualifies as a small fix for an obvious bug, and it notes the issue is labeled bug and needs-triage. The Verification section gives manual checks, before and after screenshots, a browser test that fails on main, and states what was not checked. The description also includes the model and harness line that the template requests. The one weakness is the Scope section. The issue is still labeled needs-triage, and the author argues for a small-fix exemption without a maintainer approval comment. A reviewer may decide this does not meet the approval requirement.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #27171 requires that clicking an "N unmodified lines" control in the diff view shows more lines. The PR addresses this in apps/web/src/components/DiffPanel.tsx. A new module-level cache, getCachedRenderablePatch, keeps the four most recent parses keyed by cache scope, parse options, and patch text. The existing getRenderablePatch call now goes through this cache. A refetch or re-render that returns the same patch reuses the same parsed FileDiffMetadata objects, so the viewer's identity check on the hydrated diff can pass after a file expands. A changed patch is parsed again. The test in DiffPanel.browser.test.tsx ('hands the viewer the same parsed file when it expands after a refetch') checks this identity after a refetch and expand-all. The author reports browser checks for the Changes, Uncommitted, and commit diff views, and for refresh and changed-patch cases. Limits of the evidence: the test asserts object identity, not rendered line counts, and the viewer is mocked. The Pierre identity-check behavior is not verifiable from this repository. The PR does not change the lazy per-file path (useReviewFilePatches) or the PR Code tab, which the author states may have the same problem after a refetch. The issue does not state which path its reporter used, so this gap cannot be ruled out from the evidence. The requirement is met for the standard DiffPanel path that the PR targets.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

All changed code connects to the objective in #27171. DiffPanel.tsx: the new getCachedRenderablePatch helper and its RenderablePatch type import implement the cache that keeps the parsed patch stable. DiffPanel.browser.test.tsx: the setup() changes (optional diff parameter, optional failed base ref, recorded viewer files via the AnnotatableCodeView mock, and the reset of state.viewerFiles) support the new regression test. The existing recovery test only changes its call to the new setup argument shape. No unrelated files are changed in the reviewed diff. The cache is module-level and bounded to four entries, which limits memory growth. It applies to all DiffPanel renderable patch parses, which is the intended effect of the fix and not an unrelated behavior change.

Exercise unmodified-lines loading in the regression test.

The mock replaces AnnotatableCodeView with a component that records files and returns null. It drops options.loadDiffFiles, so the test cannot render or activate an unmodified-lines separator. Expand all files only changes file-level collapse state. The final assertion checks parsed object identity, not loaded context.

Update the mock to expose an expansion action that invokes options.loadDiffFiles for the collapsed file. Assert that the loaded context remains after the same-patch refresh.
