    In recent years, the relevance of delay over throughput has been particularly emphasized. Nowadays our networks are getting more and more sensible to latency due to the proliferation of applications and services like VoIP, IPTV or online gaming where a low delay is essential for a proper performance and a good user experience.

    Most of this unnecessary delay is created by the misbehaviour of many buffers that populate Internet. Instead of performing the task for what they were created for, absorbing eventual packet bursts to prevent loss, they deceive the sender’s congestion control mechanisms into believing that the current path to the destination has more bandwidth than it really has. When the loss event occurs, if it does, it’s too late and the damage on the path, in terms of additional transmission time, has been done.

    In this bachelor thesis we will try to throw light over an specific solution that aims to reduce the extra delay produced by these bloated buffers: Active Queue Management. We have tested a bunch of AQM algorithms with different TCP modifications in order to understand the interactions between these two mechanisms.

    At Cloudflare, I had the privilege of working with the Republic of Estonia’s Information Security Authority to bolster their cybersecurity defenses. Estonia, renowned for its pioneering digital society, faced a significant rise in cyber threats, including DDoS attacks and phishing attempts.

    We implemented Cloudflare’s comprehensive security solutions to protect Estonia's critical infrastructure. Our deployment included DDoS protection to safeguard web services and applications, Bot Management to distinguish and manage bot traffic, and Advanced Rate Limiting to prevent server overloads. This multi-layered approach enabled Estonia to significantly enhance its threat detection and mitigation capabilities, ensuring the resilience and reliability of their digital services.

    A crucial aspect of our project was ensuring compliance with GDPR and other regulatory standards. Cloudflare's Data Localization Suite (DLS) was instrumental in maintaining data within EU borders, providing a secure and compliant environment for processing personal information.

    The partnership resulted in notable achievements, such as blocking 384 million threats in a single month and achieving a 75% reduction in bandwidth and data egress costs. The success of this project underscores Cloudflare’s commitment to delivering robust, scalable security solutions that meet the highest standards of privacy and performance.

  • Enhancing enterprise connectivity with Telefonica Business Solutions

    As a Support Engineer at Nokia Nuage, I had the privilege of working on a groundbreaking project with Telefonica Business Solutions, where we successfully completed the integration and deployment of Nuage Networks' Virtualized Services Platform (VSP) with Alcatel-Lucent’s service routers and Telefonica’s existing third-party IP Edge Routing platforms.     As a Support Engineer at Nokia Nuage, I had the privilege of working on a groundbreaking project with Telefonica Business Solutions, where we successfully completed the integration and deployment of Nuage Networks' Virtualized Services Platform (VSP) with Alcatel-Lucent’s service routers and Telefonica’s existing third-party IP Edge Routing platforms. We were able to create a seamless, automated network solution that streamlined the provisioning of network and application services such as firewalls and security gateways.

    Our innovative approach included the development of a service chaining portal, allowing for the fully automated instantiation of virtual machines through OpenStack and third-party APIs. This portal also integrated NETCONF provisioning, enabling dynamic service adjustments based on real-time customer input.

    This project not only demonstrated our ability to deliver sophisticated, automated networking solutions but also set a new standard for customer experience in the ICT space. The hybrid solution we implemented provided Telefonica’s enterprise customers with the flexibility to utilize automated value-added services in conjunction with optimal WAN services, tailored to their specific needs for bandwidth, control, cost, and quality of service.

    At Cloudflare, I collaborated with eTeacher Group to transition their security infrastructure towards a robust Zero Trust model, enhancing both security and performance. eTeacher Group, a leading provider of virtual learning services to over 35,000 students globally, faced challenges with their existing VPN setup, which was complex and inefficient for their remote workforce.

    We conducted a successful proof of concept with Cloudflare Access, which streamlined remote access and significantly reduced onboarding time by 60%. This was complemented by integrating Cloudflare Tunnel, allowing secure, private connections to internal applications, and Cloudflare WAF, which provided advanced security analytics and actionable insights into traffic patterns.

    Our comprehensive solution enabled eTeacher Group to eliminate their VPN, secure sensitive applications, and protect against sophisticated cyber threats. The seamless integration of Cloudflare Access improved user experience with simple and secure logins, while the Cloudflare WAF enhanced their security posture by identifying and mitigating threats such as non-existent domain attacks and credential stuffing.

    This collaboration not only fortified eTeacher Group's defenses but also set the stage for a complete Zero Trust security model, positioning them for sustained success in a dynamic digital environment.
