Russia's Yandex bot traffic nearly eliminated overnight after Ukraine drone strikes cripple multiple of 'Russia's Google' data centers — Ukraine intensifies bombing of Yandex data centers in response to Moscow’s strikes on Kyiv data centers

Russian bot traffic has dropped dramatically in the past few days after Ukraine knocked out Yandex’s biggest data centers, with a third attack happening last night. Cloudflare reports that bot traffic from the Yandex network has dropped to just 0.4% of the maximum number of HTTP requests recorded in the past two weeks. It initially dropped to around 57% on Oct. 8, which happened when Ukraine hit a Yandex data center housing two supercomputers in Sasovo, Russia, located around 195 miles to the southeast of the Kremlin. A second, bigger Yandex campus in Kaluga, about 220 miles to the west of Sasovo, was knocked offline yesterday.

These attacks are apparently Ukraine’s response to Moscow’s strikes on its own data centers, some of which resulted in the outage of some of the most popular piracy websites.

So unbelievably incompetent. "Bot traffic" for Cloudflare purposes is really about automation scripts fetching things, like curl, wget, fetch, GitHub, or Install-Module. Human users are defined as those using full-blown browsers.

I'm guessing the author got hacked by Kiev propagandists - a lot about. And they are reposting the fake story everywhere.

He has never written on Europe or war before.

the Getty images picture is from July 29th and is a Wildberries Warehouse, not a data center.

Well, all journos often succumb to the allure of the clip art. :) I see this as a minor problem. Yandex servers did get hit, and their services did experience interruptions. The thing is, nothing still prevents the hypothetical Russian bots from using X, Quora, or Reddit. None of those are hosted on Yandex, but in the West. All the Russians need to use those is a Western VPN.

No propaganda, all clear truth. I am a ukrainian and I am signing up over everything that written in the news post. Facts of war starting in 2014 are well documented by international independent media and OSINT investigators. Escalation in 2022, and russian attacks on civilian infrastructure are also globally recognized.

What indeed happened for the first time here, is the post from your account. So it is easy to assume a good chance of a russian bot activity. Wording and shame tactics used in the comment here are aligned with GMKT practices, that, I have to admit, I guided myself in the past.

BTW, it is Kyiv, not Kiev.

No truth whatsoever. Bots in the Cloudflare survey are automation scripts, with no relation to propaganda.

Kyiv was invented by a Ukrainian MFA in 2018, just to make it most different from Russian. In your native Ukrainian, there is barely any difference. In English, it is a special phonetics for virtue signaling. Y is a consonant sound, so KY combo should really be read as in KY Jello?

The Kyiv spelling dates all the way back to the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. It was officially mandated by the Ukrainian government in 1995. The only thing that changed in 2018 was an organized push to have the spelling recognized internationally, which was only necessary because of dolts like you and M Droy above.

Also, the pronunciation IS different. The Ukrainian pronunciation is actually closer to the Polish pronunciation than the Russian pronunciation.

As is often the case, comments on articles like this have strayed FAR afield.

If you want to see this closed to further comments, or even more personal action...continue with this off topic stuff.

    The choice is all yours.

Whether or not the bot traffic affect is real this will surely have some digital/payment infrastructure effects.
