Pat Gelsinger has shared the story of how his initials remained on the Intel 386 silicon die, despite them being spotted by the top brass during a pre-production design review session. Creating such inscriptions "was not done," during this era at Intel, remembers Gelsinger. Nevertheless, the legendary true-blue Intel man says he uttered “some complete nonsense about substrate tap configuration experiments” to swerve a comment on the 'PG' silicon markings by the gruff (then-CEO) Andy Grove. The end result is that Pat Gelsinger's initials are etched directly into the silicon of every 386 processor ever made.

that checks out, it seems the environment within Intel's board turned toxic shortly before when Pat was sacked.

I think Intel should have kept him. The board was impatient, but I believe his strategy was solid. I don't have much hope for Intel long-term under a CEO focused on cost-cutting. The true impact of Intel's cuts won't be seen until whatever they're developing now makes it to market (or doesn't), so it may still seem like they are "fine" for a little while yet.

    short term profit*

Pat's goal would have likely been more profit long term as he knew a healthy intel was needed long term not a quick influx that dies out.

but yeah typical shareholders don't care about the long term gains if it impact them in the now & why they love new guys approach as he's cutting so much its increasing value temporarily but its not good long term as you'd have nothing left.
