Yet another gaming subscription service is raising prices, and this time it's Sony's turn. PlayStation Plus plans are getting a price bump, with the Essential tier going up by a dollar if you pay monthly, and three dollars if you opt for the three-month deal.
However, this will only affect new customers and those who change their payment plan. If you keep everything as is with your recurring payment, it sounds like the price of your PS Plus subscription will be unaffected - although you will be locked into it if you want to avoid the price jump.
PS Plus Prices Go Up On May 20 With Just Two Days' Warning
As of the May 20 price increase, the cost of PS Plus Essential will be the following:
- One-month subscription: $10.99 USD / €9.99 EUR / £7.99 GBP
- Three-month subscription: $27.99 USD / €27.99 EUR / £21.99 GBP
It's unclear if this will affect the other PS Plus tiers, but it sounds like it will, since the update says this will be the "starting" price. We also don't know if this will extend to 12-month PS Plus subscriptions, which are currently priced at $79.99 USD / €71.99 EUR / £59.99 GBP for Essential.
While existing customers will not be affected (unless you're in Turkey or India), this was a bad time to roll out any price increase. Xbox is currently getting some positive attention for reducing the cost of Xbox Game Pass - even if it's still an increase on what it was prior to its controversial price leap. With the price having gone down, some were already making unfavourable comparisons between PS Plus and Game Pass, and this won't help matters for Sony.
