With the prices for just about everything on the up, Xbox made the unprecedented move of cutting the price of Game Pass earlier this week. Since the console war is eternal, and when one side does something good, it means the other one must be bad, the price cut has led to some unfavorable comparisons to PS Plus.
PS Plus Subscribers Are Reassessing Whether They're Getting Their Money's Worth
Push Square was the first to note that the price of PlayStation's subscription service was being called into question after Xbox decided to roll back the price of Game Pass. The sharing of that article has only stirred the pot, as now the lion's share of the PS Plus/Game Pass comparisons are taking place in its replies.
Bethesda.net - no affiliation to the Xbox-owned studio, although their views on this topic might align - says "PS Plus was never worth it," due to it not having triple-A titles day one like Game Pass. That is the main draw of Xbox's subscription service, and the leading reason why, even now, its most expensive tier, Ultimate, is still significantly more expensive than PS Plus Premium.
Others have recentered the spotlight on the lack of value Plus subscribers have been getting from Premium's additions lately. The main draw of the most expensive Plus tier is its Classics Catalog, a library of games from PlayStation's older consoles. However, the rate at which new games are added to that library has slowed to a crawl, as it's been getting just one title per month.
One user has suggested the rather radical idea of both Xbox and PlayStation dropping the monthly fees of their respective subscription services to $10 per month and forgetting about day one games entirely. Xbox dropped Call of Duty from Game Pass to justify its price drop this week. Part of me feels like if it could walk back its day one promise, it would strongly consider doing so, but unfortunately, unlike CoD, which has only had two of its games launch on Game Pass, that ship has long since sailed.
PlayStation No Longer Has Room To Increase The Price Of PS Plus
Game Pass's price cut was always going to have people questioning why they're paying so much for Plus, especially now that the price gap between them is only $5. PlayStation was likely jumping for joy when the price of Game Pass Ultimate was upped to $29.99 per month, as it provided room for a Plus price jump.
Now that the gap is down to $5, and there are already unwanted comparisons being made, that might no longer be an option, at least not until Xbox eventually caves and puts the price of Game Pass back up a bit. Premium currently costs $17.99 per month, while Game now costs $22.99. As for which one is the better value, while Game Pass has those valuable day one offerings, Plus technically has a bigger library - 634 games compared to the 608 currently available on Game Pass.
