Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick has revealed in a new interview that Grand Theft Auto 6 is around 18 months behind schedule after its delays, while also reconfirming that it's coming this November.
Rockstar fans have been on absolute tenterhooks over the past few months as we approach the promised "Summer" start to GTA 6's marketing campaign. Things have really come to a boil this week, though, as an email from Best Buy seemingly leaked that pre-orders for the game are going to start tomorrow, May 18.
There have been a lot of reports on this and whether it's actually going to happen, but it's given everyone eagle eyes for any kind of update on GTA 6. Although it's not quite the one we all wanted, something interesting has just happened, as Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has revealed some details about the game in a new interview, including how far behind it is.
After Its Two Delays, GTA 6 Is Around A Year And A Half Behind Schedule
Does That Point To A Previously Planned May 2025 Release Date, Or November 2024?
Over on Twitter, videotech reported that a new interview with Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has just been shared by YouTuber David Senra. Since Senra's channel is mostly about "studying entrepreneurs" and "today's builders", the interview is mostly focused on Zelnick himself, although there is, of course, a bit of chatter about GTA 6.
At one point in the interview, Senra asks Zelnick about the timeline pressures surrounding GTA 6, which included questioning how far behind schedule the game is after its two notable delays. Zelnick says that he thinks the team is "about 18 months behind the original date", which is a specific number we haven't heard before.
What that ballpark points to, though, is a little unclear. If Zelnick means 18 months from right now, then GTA 6 might have been planned to release around November of 2024. If the CEO means 18 months from the game's new release date, then the original plan was to launch around May 2025.
I think that Zelnick likely means from the current release date, as November 2024 seems far too early to expect the game considering how long it's taken since.
Unsurprisingly, Zelnick also had a chance in the interview to reconfirm GTA 6's current November 19 release date, as he was asked by Senra how he deals with all the questions about when the game is coming and if he just says he doesn't known. Zelnick somewhat humourously says that he does know, before confirming for what has to be the fifth time this year that the game is still on track.
