Fable's protagonist will not have a set gender, just like in Fable 2 and 3. This was confirmed in the deep dive at the Xbox Developer Direct, giving us a look at our customisation options.

This comes after Fable became yet another culture war target for having thusfar used a female protagonist in its marketing. This led some to believe that the player character would be a woman, without the option to play as a man. Naturally, this meant the usual crowd cried "woke", even though the solo female protagonist hadn't been confirmed.

You Can Choose What Kind Of Hero You Play As In The New Fable

In today's demo, we saw how players will be able to select from different builds to customise the main character's appearance.

"In Fable, you'll be able to pick from a range of different character heads," one of the developers tells us. "You can customise your clothing, hair, skintone, tattoos, and scars, so the hero you play represents you."

This is a vast improvement on the customisation options in the original games. In the first Fable, you could only play as a man, and the only things you could change were his hair and clothes - although some other changes would come about depending on your build and morality. While Fable 2 let you play as a woman, you still couldn't change much. In fact, this will be the first Fable game that lets us change the lead's skintone.

Fable Could Be The Biggest PS5 Game Of 2026

With its recent delay, Microsoft is no doubt making some big plans for Fable.

Hopefully, now that this has been settled, the "anti-woke" lot can settle down. It's all become quite repetitive now, and I believe they have made their distaste towards the hero used in the marketing abundantly clear. Their loss.

Unfortunately, after all this time in development, Fable is coming to us at a time when Xbox finds itself struggling on multiple fronts. The fact that Fable is launching on PS5 alongside Xbox shows just how dire things have gotten, as its console-exclusive strategy has been well and truly abandoned. However, Microsoft is also currently a BDS target, meaning there are many who are boycotting all Xbox products - including Xbox-published games - until it is removed from the list.
