He's been to Pax and Summer Game Fest for reporting, and has a specific focus on MMORPGs, JRPGs, mobile gaming, and Tabletop gaming, specifically Dungeons & Dragons and Disney Lorcana.
Jerel delves deep into the best builds and options for these titles, providing excellent guidance for players of every skill level.
Whenever there is a set launched for Disney's Lorcana, there are starter decks filled to the brim with cards of all kinds and ink costs. Deciding which starter decks you'd like to purchase can be difficult, especially if you aren't planning to eventually collect them all.
But knowing what's included in each deck can make that choice clear. Plus, it can give you some insight against an opponent who is using one of the starter decks as a base for what they bring to the table against you. So, if you're looking for every card included in the Lorcana starter decks, you'll find them all below.
Updated September 25, 2025: by Jerel Levy: Disney Lorcana set nine, also known as Fabled, introduces a lot of new things to the game. Not only are there two new rarity options, but Fabled also brings reprinted cards from he first four Lorcana sets, thanks to rotation finally being introduced to the game. With Iconic and Epic rarities revealed, rarity shifts for older cards being reprinted, and even more starter decks, we've updated this guide to reflect the current Lorcana state.
Set One Amber And Amethyst Starter Deck
The First Chapter
Just like with every starter deck, there are 60 cards included in the Amethyst and Amber starter deck. This matches the deck size used in any game of Lorcana, making sure that you don't need to purchase any other cards. Unless, of course, you want to.
In this deck, you'll find powerful magic users who take center stage in the Amethyst portion of the deck. In the Amber part of the starter deck, you'll find a total of five song cards, one of the things that Amber is most known for. Other common themes with the Amber cards are healing and getting characters into your hand quickly.

Set One Emerald And Ruby Starter Deck
The First Chapter
The next combination in set one is Emerald and Ruby ink colors. This deck helps introduce players to Action cards, a staple of the Emerald suite, no matter which set you're looking at. It also features a lot of villains, making the card Vicious Betrayal even more powerful.
It also includes Mother Knows Best, getting players used to the idea that they can bring back banished characters. This complements the ability of one of the faces of this deck. Cruella De Vil, Miserable as Usual allows you to return a character back to a player's hand, showing off that once a character is on the field, they can be bounced back to their owner, forcing them to pay more ink to bring them back or get rid of them.

Set One Sapphire And SteelStarter Deck
The First Chapter
The name of Sapphire's game is Item cards. It has a total of seven Items, showing off that some items, like Coconut Basket are excellent for staying on the field, giving you benefits every round you keep them there or activate them. Meanwhile, other Items, like Frying Pan, are meant to be banished in order to give you buffs or weaken your opponent.
Then Steel shows off both Bodyguard and Challenger cards. These are abilities that aren't unique to a specific character, but that any character can have. These mechanics can help you shift the power dynamic by either forcing your opponent into challenging a certain character or by giving your character more of an upper hand when they're the one on the attack.
The movie Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is featured heavily, not just through the face of the Amber side of the deck being The Queen. But it's filled up with the Dwarfs themselves, as well as a Snow White variant, Lost In The Forest.
This showcased synergy between characters, including abilities or gameplay that could only be used if other qualifying characters were on the field, like Bashful not being able to quest unless there were other Dwarfs in play.
Then, to no surprise, Sapphire continues to showcase Items and features Belle, Inventive Engineer who makes it even easier to bring an Item onto the field by making it cost one less ink if you play it after Belle quests. And seven Items in this deck can make use of that ability, all of them being from the Sapphire suite.

Set Two Amethyst And Steel Starter Deck
Rise Of The Floodborn
Merlin and Madam Mim run away with the Amethyst portion of this starter deck. Similarly to the Seven Dwarfs, Madam Mim and Merlin show off how powerful certain character card combinations can be.
Merlin, Goat can gain you lore not just every time you play him, but also when he leaves the field. Then, Madam Mim can bounce him safely back into your hand, setting up a vicious cycle that, if it isn't stopped, can give you a huge lore lead.
For Steel, Tiana, Celebrating Princess showcases that if you keep your hand empty, you can actually gain benefits.
While a bit contradictory with the Amethyst portion of the deck, which has you constantly sending characters back to your hand, if you keep bringing them to the field, your opponent may be put in a difficult situation, unable to use Actions if you play your hand right.
Locations, locations, locations. Into The Inklands introduced Locations across all of the gem-colored suites. For Amber, this is Never Land, Mermaid Lagoon and for the Emerald side of the deck it's De Vil Manor, Cruella's Estate.
Both of these Locations don't have a unique ability, but they ease the player into using them by being cheap, ink cost-wise, while also gaining you one lore at the start of your turn, so long as the locations stay on the field.

Set Three Ruby And Sapphire Starter Deck
Into The Inklands
While the Amber and Emerald starter deck gets you used to using Locations, the Ruby part of this deck has a card, Voyage, that makes it easy to move characters to these places once they've been set up. Then, thanks to Moana, Born Leader, the deck also shows you the value of having the majority of your characters at a Location.
Sapphire continues the trend from Rise Of The Floodborn of showing how powerful synergy between characters can be with Huey, Dewy, and Louie, particularly with Huey's ability, Three Nephews, which allows you to draw three cards if one of each of the Nephews is on the field.
The family members of Encanto dominate the Amber and Amethyst starter deck. Both suites are made up of most of the family members, all of them working together to give you a strong, set four, deck.
Though most of their abilities can also be very effective on their own, such as Julieta Madrigal, who can not only heal your characters, but allows you to draw cards if you do use her ability to do that.
They are featured in the Amber Sing Together card, which is a mechanic that was introduced in set four. Look At This Family is a cost seven card that allows multiple characters to come together to sing it. This helps you get characters of your choice into your hand. This is excellent for when you are looking for a key character but they haven't shown up on their own yet.

Set Four Sapphire And Steel Starter Deck
Ursula's Return
Franchise-wise, Hercules, Mulan, and Sleeping Beauty are the big representatives in this starter deck. And, despite Sapphire always being known for Items, that changes in this deck, showing off Songs instead, as well as the Location Thebes, The Big Olive.
This Location rewards you for getting into fights while your characters are there, gaining you lore when your characters staying at the location are successful in banishing opposing characters.
Dig A Little Deeper is the Sapphire Sing Together card, letting you look at a massive seven cards at the top of your deck before choosing two to place into your hand. The other two songs, Seldom All They Seem and One Last Hope, cost less to play, making it less of a drain if you decide to pay ink instead of having your characters sing them.
The Amethyst and Ruby starter deck for Shimmering Skies is mainly about two franchises: Frozen and Wreck-It Ralph. With that, we see some different variants of Anna and the inclusion of a lot of the racers featured in Sugar Rush, the game within the first Wreck-It Ralph movie.
Mickey and Friends also dance and food fight their way into this deck, making up for eight of the Ruby cards included in the starter deck.
Of course, however, the highlights are Elsa, The Fifth Spirit and Wreck-It Ralph, Demolition Dude, both of which are featured on the cover of the deck. Ralph will gain you lore as he remains on the field damaged. Meanwhile, Elsa has three abilities that make her a scary and impressive force on the field, particularly when she enters play, as she can challenge immediately and exert an opponent in order to do just that.

Set FiveEmerald And Steel Starter Deck
Shimmering Skies
Not to be too surface level when describing this deck, but Scar and Kronk both feature on the outside packaging, and, as you can imagine, that means there are quite a lot of The Lion King and The Emperor's New Groove cards in this set five deck.
Scar, Vengeful Lion will help with card draw, as every time you challenge an already damaged character, you can take the top card of your deck and tuck it safely into your hand. Card draw is one of the most useful things as the more cards in hand, the better decisions you can make and, of course, the sooner your most powerful cards are in your possession.
Then, with Kronk, Head Of Security, you can play characters that cost five or less for free. The catch is Kronk will have needed to defeat a character in a challenge. It's a very strong ability and, if you can keep Kronk healthy and protected, can help you fill your side of the board with characters.
Pirate fans are eating well with the introductions of the Azurite Sea starter decks. In the first of the two set six decks, we see the combination of Ruby and Amber and many classic characters reimagined as swashbuckling, sword-slinging pirates.
The homies from the Hundred Acre Woods join the fray with adorable takes on what Pooh and the other would look like as pirates. We also see the Darling children adopting the pirate life for themselves while still in Neverland. Using these cards with other characters labeled as pirates can create quite the strong deck to face down.
Mr. Smee could make for an excellent companion for cards like Jim Hawkins, Honorable Pirate if you decided to try out an Amber/Steel deck. Or Wendy Darling, Courageous Captain for a Ruby/Steel deck. If you do decide to go that route, pirates won't be in short supply as quite a few, including some Captain Hook cards, have been introduced through the Steel ink color.

Set Six Emerald And Sapphire Starter Deck
Azurite Sea
Big Hero Six plays a big role in this starter deck as the whole crew has at least one card variant tucked away in this Emerald/Sapphire deck. The theme isn't so pirate-centric with this one, instead having a lot of heroes taking on that traditional role, or the role of being an explorer.
We also get a glimpse at the Megabot item that allows you to banish items or damaged characters. But they aren't the only bots that make a splash in this set. Although not included in these starter decks, another item you'll want to check out is the Microbots.
Microbots are a Sapphire item, and similar to when the 101 Dalmations were introduced, you can have as many Microbots in your deck as you want. They reduce the strength of a character by one for each Micrbot you have in play. So slotting at least a few of these cards into your Emerald/Sapphire deck could be an unpleasant surprise for your opponent.
Be weary, those who pick up the set seven starter decks. Previous sets have introduced new mechanics, such as Locations in Into The Inklands. Well, Archazia's Island brings dual-ink colors to Lorcana.
With it being a new mechanic, you won't see dozens of dual-ink cards, but there are five of them you have access to in the Amethyst and Steel starter deck. They center around Jafar, Newly Crowned, however, don't be distracted purely by him. Giant Cobra, Ghostly Serphant and Restoring The Crown are a deadly combo to use against your opponent.
The new ability, Vanish, keeps the Giant Cobra protected from actions, or at least ensures mutal destruction. Depending on the action, the threat alone might keep your character safe while you build up the ink you need for Restoring The Crown. This card, even without the Cobra, can allow you to turn the tide of battle or completely dominate the other player(s).

Set Seven Ruby And Sapphire Starter Deck
Archazia's Island
It's no surprise if you've seen the packaging for this starter deck that it revolves around the Beauty And The Beast characters greatly, particularly Belle, Mechanic Extraordinaire. But she is far from the only good card in this deck.
Players have found success with Cogsworth, of all characters, as he is usually used to challenge and banish characters thanks to his increase in strength if you have an item in your discard pile. He synergizes well with the song card All Is Found, as you can choose two of your cards to, well, discard.
This helps with quickly ramping up the number of cards in your inkwell, making it easier to play the high cost characters like Belle, Mechanic Extraordinaire, who can also be a shift target, as well as Lyle Tiberius Rourke, Crystallized Mercenary, who is not only a key damage dealer, but also pretty darn good at questing.
The Madrigal family and The Princess and the Frog characters got some splendid coverage in the Reign of Jafar Amber and Amethyst starter deck. This starter deck began to blur the lines of Singers and Song cards, giving Amethyst some options for when Songs are used to help synergize with the action.
Cards like Tiana, Natural Talent, and Pepa Madrigal, Sensitive Sister, combined with new songs like Trials and Tribulations on the Amber side, were great incentives to try for the color notorious for its Singers. They help you gain lore and deal with threats against you.
Coupled with Amethyst cards like Dolores Madrigal, Within Earshot, and new songs like This Is My Family and Fantastical And Magical, it presented a new format for Singers in Amethyst to try.

Set 8 Ruby And Steel Starter Deck
Reign Of Jafar
Mulan is all over this starter set, with the long-awaited Mushu coming into Reign of Jafar and making quite the stir.
