Sandra O. reacted on thisSandra O. reacted on thisI've had several people reach out, so I thought I'd finally post. Yes, I was affected by the Snowflake layoffs two weeks ago, when they eliminated the entire technical writing team. Obviously it was a shock, and folks are still scratching their heads over this decision. (Wishing the best of luck to the fantastic product managers, designers, and engineers that I worked alongside.) On the other hand, these last couple of weeks have been pretty nice. I'm also surprised how easily I've fallen into a new routine. I'm planning to take some more time off and decide what I want to do when I grow up, after I get bored with reading books, playing video games, cooking, hiking, focusing on my physical health, etc. To continue to exercise my brain, I'm going to focus any job searches on contract roles. But as they say, "never say never," and if the right opportunity presents itself, I wouldn't pass it up or turn it down. (Though even thinking about that right now makes me tear up a little. I think I need this break.)

Thinking of training your developers (and other experts) only on hard skills? Mike Cohn makes a strong case for balancing technical training with soft skills. Technology and tools evolve quickly, so the value of hard skills can (and will!) fade over time. But skills like communication, facilitation, empathy, productive conflict, collaboration, and decision-making don’t expire - they compound. And they often make the biggest difference in how a team works.

After working across a few startups, I’ve been reflecting more on what product work actually teaches you over time. One lesson that keeps coming back: you can’t change people. Early on, I thought better tooling, clearer communication, or smarter decisions would naturally change how teams and customers behaved and engaged. If we just built the right thing, and they understood what we built, adoption would follow. But people don’t fundamentally change how they work. Period. Especially not because a product wants them to. They adopt things that fit how they already think, decide, and operate. Now, when something isn’t working, I spend less time asking “How do we get people to use this?” and more time asking “What behavior already exists that we should design around?” Product gets easier, and better, when you stop trying to redesign people.

Product Managers: Your Resume Lacks This kpi growth evidence and It is Not What You Think 🚀 Your roadmap is clear but your resume is lost. 📉 Product Managers get rejected for missing user growth stats. 🔇 The hard truth: Stagnant user retention and feature bloat drain product capital. 💸 You lead squads but fail to prove your actual impact. If you cannot link your work to North Star metrics, you get ignored. Your current profile is letting top-tier offers slip away. 🩸 The job market is very tough right now. You deserve a clear path forward. Your current approach is holding you back. You need to show your real value. 🚀 I know how tired you are of debating feature priorities at 6 PM. You do not get credit for the roadmap pivots you prevent. 🛡️ Your profile looks like a generic Jira or Miro manual. It does not look like a profit-protecting growth engine. Recruiters want a person who uses logic to protect profit. 💰 They do not care about the number of user stories you wrote. They care about the cost mitigation and market reliability created. They want to see if you de-risked the product-market fit. If you list methodologies only, you look like everyone else. This keeps your salary stuck at the bottom. 🛑 Others who speak the language of Engineering ROI win. Does your resume prove your work actually saves money? Act fast to get the best jobs. The high-paying roles are filling up quickly. If your wins are buried in technical jargon, move on. Stop being a requirement gatherer. Start being a Revenue Accelerator. 🚀 The VIP Fix for your Summary: ↳ 📌 Connect your problem-solving to faster results. Optimized onboarding flows to cut time-to-value for new users by 40%. ↳ 📌 Show how you save the company money. Reduced customer acquisition costs by 25% through strategic organic growth loops. 📉 ↳ 📌 Explain how fixing errors protects the budget. Deprioritized high-cost, low-impact features, preventing $300k in wasted dev spend. ↳ 📌 Show how you make the team more efficient. Built automated A/B testing frameworks to slash validation cycles by 50%. ↳ 📌 Link your work to better cash flow. Improved monthly recurring revenue (MRR) by 15% via rigorous churn analysis and fix. P.S. Product Management Is Not a Traffic Cop Role I saw a post today that every product manager should scroll past as quickly as possible! A post declaring the job of a PM is mostly operational and that we must now accept that. Nope. Every so often, someone posts a hot take claiming product management is not strategic. They describe the role as a traffic cop. Purely operational. Headed toward extinction once AI takes over. When you see posts dripping with that level of cynicism, keep scrolling. Those narratives do nothing to elevate the profession or clarify what strong product management looks like. Yes, product management includes tactical work. You will sit in standups. You will manage backlogs. You will coordinate releases. Some days will feel heavily operational. That is not the job. That is part of the job. The real work is running the business of the product. You own financial outcomes. Revenue growth. Margin expansion. Retention. You make tradeoff decisions based on economic impact, not feature popularity. You stay close to the market. You engage customers directly. You pressure test assumptions. You translate external signals into internal priorities. You align stakeholders across the company. Sales wants acceleration. Support wants stability. Implementation wants simplicity. Engineering wants feasibility. Finance wants predictability. You integrate those perspectives into a coherent plan tied to business results. No other role sits at the intersection of strategy, finance, customer insight, and cross functional execution in quite the same way. AI will automate parts of the workflow. Roadmap formatting. Release notes. Status summaries. Good. That frees you to focus on higher leverage work. AI does not own the P&L. AI does not build trust with customers. AI does not negotiate tradeoffs between competing executives with different incentives. If your experience of product management feels purely operational, ask a harder question. Are you positioned as an order taker, or are you operating as a business owner? There is a difference. Some days will still feel tactical. That is part of execution. But the strategy you developed from market insight should drive those tactics. The day to day work should connect to measurable financial outcomes. Product management is not a traffic control function. At its best, it is general management for a product line. If you want the role to be strategic, step into the parts of the job that require ownership. Speak in revenue, margin, and retention. Anchor decisions in data. Stay close to customers. Lead alignment across the organization. The profession advances when we model what strong product leadership looks like, not when we reduce it to its lowest expression.

One of the most helpful ways to define the role of Product Operations is to use the Product Lifecycle as your roadmap. Product Ops can easily become a catch-all function. Teams come with requests: reporting, tooling, planning support, process fixes, documentation. Without a framework, it becomes reactive work. One structure I’ve found incredibly useful is anchoring Product Operations to the Product Lifecycle. When you look at the lifecycle end-to-end, it becomes clear where Product Ops should introduce structure, process, tools, and enablement. 1. Discovery & Strategy Where ideas take shape and direction is set. Product Ops can support by introducing: • Strategic planning frameworks • Product portfolio visibility • Prioritization models • Leadership reporting and insights • Clear documentation of product strategy 2. Planning & Roadmapping Where strategy becomes an executable plan. Product Ops can help create: • Standardized planning cadences • Roadmapping processes • Cross-functional alignment rituals • Capacity planning frameworks • Portfolio tracking and visibility 3. Build & Execution Where teams move from plan to delivery. Product Ops adds value through: • Program execution frameworks • Initiative tracking and governance • Tooling optimization (Jira, Aha, etc.) • Cross-team dependency management • Decision and escalation paths 4. Launch & Go-to-Market Where the product meets the customer. Product Ops can enable: • Launch readiness frameworks • Cross-functional coordination (product, sales, marketing, support) • Release communication standards • Enablement for internal teams • Launch metrics and feedback loops 5. Measure & Learn Where insights drive the next cycle of improvement. Product Ops plays a role in: • Defining success metrics • Product analytics visibility • Revenue and adoption reporting • Customer feedback loops • Post-launch retrospectives When Product Ops aligns its work to the product lifecycle, something powerful happens: • Work becomes purposeful instead of reactive • Priorities become clearer • Gaps in the operating model become visible • Teams understand where Product Ops fits In other words, the lifecycle becomes the map for where operational structure is needed most. And that clarity is what allows Product Ops teams to scale impact. 💭 ❓ Curious how others structure their Product Ops priorities — do you anchor it to the lifecycle, the org structure, or something else?

⭐ Product & Program Management Opportunities - Roles for All Levels, Internships to Senior Positions. Before you apply, here are 5 tips to stand out in Product & Program Management roles: 1️⃣ Show impact, not just responsibilities Instead of writing “managed product roadmap,” highlight outcomes like revenue growth, user adoption, or process improvements. 2️⃣ Demonstrate cross functional leadership Product and program roles require working with engineering, design, marketing, and stakeholders. Show examples where you aligned teams and drove decisions. 3️⃣ Use metrics in your resume Numbers make your work credible. Mention KPIs such as user growth, conversion rates, delivery timelines, or cost reductions. 4️⃣ Highlight problem solving and product thinking Recruiters want to see how you identify problems, validate solutions, and prioritize features based on customer needs. 5️⃣ Customize your resume for each role Mirror the keywords from the job description, especially around tools, frameworks, and domain expertise. 👉 Program Manager - Airtable 🔗 https://lnkd.in/da_vREbx 👉 Program Manager - Amazon 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dcbDU-88, 👉 Technical Program Manager - Apple 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dtuFKMw8 👉 Program Manager - Anduril 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dV5FG5gM 👉 Program Manager - GitLab 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dfZdqXfb 👉 Product Manager - Alarm. com 🔗 https://lnkd.in/d7f5AMKf 👉 Product Manager - Apptronik 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dwuCd3v7 👉 Product Manager II - Microsoft Corporation 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dpKKWtJ4 👉 Associate Product Manager - Relay 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dBFwrbmK 👉 Product Manager II - Tinder 🔗 https://lnkd.in/d5eFCw9j 👉 Product Management Intern - StockX 🔗 https://lnkd.in/deyF29qT 📌 Want early access to tech openings like this before they go viral? Breaking into product management without prior product experience can feel confusing. If you’re trying to transition from a non-product role or you’re early in your career without product exposure, it’s normal to wonder: “How do I stand out in interviews?” One of the best ways is to show how your current skills apply to product management. Even if you’ve never held a product title. 👉 Here are 10 common interview questions that can help you prepare for entry-level product roles or your first product management opportunity. 1. Can you talk about a product (app, website, or service) you use regularly and explain why you like it or what you would improve? 2. Imagine you have several ideas to improve a product. How would you decide which one to work on first? 3. Tell me about a time you worked with people from different departments or backgrounds to complete a project. 4. How would you gather feedback from customers or users before launching something new? 5. How would you handle a situation where your manager wants one thing, but your teammate or client wants something else? 6. Share an example from your current or previous role where you solved a problem creatively, even if it was outside product management. 7. How do you define success for a project or product you worked on in your previous roles? 8. Can you describe a time when you had to make a tough decision with limited information? What did you do? 9. Why do you want to become a product manager, and what from your current experience do you think will help you in this role? 10. If you had to improve a product you’ve used recently, what would be your first step? Remember - Focus on showing how you approach problem solving, teamwork, and customer understanding. These skills matter more than specific product experience. ----- I provide mentorship where I help people transition into product management by preparing for interviews with practical examples and approaches. I asked a Product Ops lead last week: "What did you accomplish this quarter?" She pulled up a slide deck. Twelve pages. Charts showing meeting attendance, workshop completion rates, and roadmap decks delivered on schedule. I asked a different question. "What decision did a product team make faster because of your work?" Silence. Here is what I have learned. The best Product Ops work I see has nothing to do with meetings. It is about designing systems that make coordination unnecessary most of the time. Three examples from this year: A Product Ops lead at a B2B company killed five recurring dependency syncs. She replaced them with a one-page decision rights map. Teams went from four hours per week in alignment meetings to decisions made in a Slack thread. Another built a self-service platform adoption dashboard. Leadership stopped asking for weekly status reports. They started asking how to get more teams onboarded faster. A third gave teams an outcome hypothesis template. The roadmap went from 400 output items to 60 measurable bets. Lead time dropped from 11 weeks to 4 weeks. None of these examples involved adding more "meetings". All of them involved designing systems. If your Product Ops role is spending 70 percent of their time in coordination meetings, they are not fixing the system. They have become part of the problem you hired them to solve. New blog post breaks down what high-value Product Ops work actually looks like, plus a "What to Stop Doing" section that most teams need to read. Link in first comment!
