James Purvis shared thisI am beyond grateful to be able to post something like this��� On September 15th, I get to interview Joe Montana. For anyone who knows me well, you probably understand just how surreal that sentence is for me. Joe Montana was my hero growing up. He’s the reason I wanted to play quarterback. He’s the reason I became a Notre Dame football fan. I wore his jerseys as a kid all the time, watched and read everything I could about him, and I’m pretty sure I collected every Joe Montana football card ever made. 😂 When people talk about meeting their childhood heroes, this is literally that for me. And now, somehow, I get the opportunity to sit down with him and have a conversation. I’ll be interviewing Joe during Rubrik’s AI + Identity Resilience Summit for a session called “Master of the Moment: The GOAT Playbook for the Agentic Era.” We’re going to talk about performing under pressure, preparation, leadership, trust, resilience, and what it takes to stay composed when everything is on the line. But if I’m being completely transparent, there’s probably going to be a moment when I’m sitting across from him thinking: “Holy sh*t. James Purvis shared thisThere’s a lot of movement in tech sales right now. Especially toward AI startups. And I get it. Hot category. Big funding rounds. Big OTEs. Equity upside. The chance to be part of something early. But after listening to the recent Revenue Builders Podcast episode with Chad Peets and Chris Degnan, “Why Fast Growth is a Pipeline to Expose Weak Sales Organizations,” one thing really stuck with me: You have to read the fine print. Not all ARR is created equal. Committed ARR is very different from month-to-month run rate. A big funding round does not guarantee product-market fit. A high OTE does not guarantee attainable quota. And fast growth does not fix weak sales fundamentals. In many cases, it exposes them. I wrote a blog post on this topic because I think it’s an important moment for sellers to pause and do real diligence before betting their career on the next shiny thing. Think like an investor. Ask about revenue quality. Ask how many reps are hitting quota. Ask whether customers are expanding. Ask whether the sales motion is repeatable. Your career is the investment. The AI opportunity is real. But so is the risk of confusing hype with mastery. You could feel the preparation, the competitiveness, and the commitment to getting better in every session. We kept it high-energy the whole way: • Identity Resilience “Family Feud” • A “March Madness” bracket that went into triple overtime (this got super competitive!). Great job by everyone and special shout out to the “Final Four” Abigail (Veit) Bishop , Zach Franklin , Dan Triggs, and the overall winner Charlie Peters 💰 • Non-stop collaboration, learning, sharing best practices - Capped w an incredible 10+ minute customer testimonial to the team (CISO of an $18B organization) - this was absolute 🔥 But what stood out most wasn’t just the fun—it was the level of talent in the room.
