For 16 seasons, Butch Goncharoff coached Bellevue High School to a 193-14 record and 11 state championships. A public school of 1,200 kids in the Pacific Northwest that wasn't on anyone's radar. What he built wasn't a football program. It was a vehicle for formation. He turned boys into men. Every year he took 80 players to an old army base on the Washington coast for the most brutal week most of us had ever experienced. Three practices a day, full pads, in the July heat. He broke us down deliberately. And then, at the end of the one of the hardest weeks of our lives, a ritual that would stick with us forever. Letters from parents, friends, and coaches. Young men spread across four hundred acres reading, perhaps for the first time, about how much they meant to adults they respected. Then, in a room full of alpha males, we shed tears and shared about what was really going on in our lives behind closed doors. Being pushed to our breaking point and developing the ability to be real with each other wasn't a coincidence. That combination produced something no team-building exercise, culture presentation, or leadership retreat could ever come close to replicating. I almost quit before my junior year. Built in Seattle over more than a decade. Local employees. Patented technology. The kind of business every elected official in this state would name in a press release about Washington's innovation economy. She is leaving because the math no longer works. The expanded sales tax on services that the legislature passed last year added a ten percent surcharge to nearly every operating cost. Marketing. Advertising. IT. Web development. Every line item her company spends on to grow. This is not a problem for the wealthy. It is a problem for everyone who wants to build something here. The restaurant owner watching the sales tax eat her margin. The two founders renting an office in Ballard with money they saved from their last job. The immigrant family opening a second location. The engineer thinking about leaving her corporate job to start a company. Every Boeing, Microsoft, Amazon, Costco, and Starbucks was once one of those people. The next ones are watching what the state does to the current ones and making decisions accordingly. Washington's political class is telling a story about the state's finances that is not true. They know it. They keep proposing solutions they know will not work. The real problem is a budget that has grown from thirty billion dollars in 2013 to more than eighty billion today, far faster than population and inflation combined. After a competitive marketing process that generated 7 tours and 6 offers, the property closed at $308,333/unit, a price point rarely achieved for 1970s and 1980s vintage product in the South Sound. Our goal was to deliver the highest price possible for our client, and seller financing played a big role in getting there. In a market where higher conventional interest rates are squeezing both loan proceeds and cash flow, we were able to structure a transaction where the buyer accepted a higher purchase price in exchange for seller financing, creating stronger pro forma cash flow than conventional debt would have allowed. Great having our team work alongside Tanner Fogle to successfully market and close this property. Miles Carlson liked thisMiles Carlson liked thisI don’t think I’ve ever felt more optimistic about my life. That’s a weird thing for me to say. I’ve spent a lot of my life feeling like I was behind. Behind where I thought I should be. Unsure of what I was doing. Always looking at the next thing that needed to be fixed, achieved, or figured out. Even when things were going well, I was usually thinking about what came next. Lately, that’s changed. - I’m surrounded by some incredible people. - I’ve pushed myself into things that used to scare me. - My business is growing and I genuinely love what I get to do every day. - I’ve gotten into the best shape of my life and somehow convinced myself that running is fun. - I’m building communities and friendships that I’m incredibly grateful for. And I feel more comfortable with myself than I have in a long time. There’s still a ton I want. I want to build a bigger business. Help more people. Travel more. Run more races. Take bigger swings. Find a partner I can build a great life with. But I’m starting to realize something: I don’t need to wait until I accomplish all of that to appreciate my life. For once, I’m not desperately trying to get somewhere. I actually like where I am. I think that might be one of the biggest signs that things are going well.

As part of this challenge, our team is aiming to raise $100,000 collectively. I have chosen to dedicate my fundraising efforts to Hilinski's Hope, a nonprofit organization founded by the Hilinski family in honor of their son, Tyler, a former Washington State University quarterback. The foundation’s mission is to educate, advocate, and eliminate the stigma associated with mental illness for student-athletes, and to equip programs with mental wellness resources so that mental health can one day be supported in parity with physical health. As an athlete from the state of Washington, you can imagine how this cause would resonate deeply with me. While our schools may be rivals on the field, the mental well-being of student-athletes transcends any game. I want to use this opportunity to honor Tyler’s legacy and help further the organization’s mission to foster open conversations and proactive support systems within athletics. I am raising money for the athletes who may be struggling quietly, who feel like they have no one to turn to, or who have difficulty seeing a path forward. My hope is that the funds and awareness we raise can help ensure that they never have to navigate those difficult moments alone.
