The more Backrooms games you play, the more they blur into one. And rightly so. There are only so many times we can see that yellow wallpaper and hear the buzzing of fluorescent lights before needing a sip of Almond Water ourselves.
There are as many Backrooms games as there are Level 0 corridors. Whether you’re a fan of this no-clipping creepypasta or came here out of curiosity after watching Kane Parsons’ Backrooms (2026), here are our top recommendations for the brave wanderers out there. Be warned, there are many more levels and entities to face outside of Level 0 and Pixels’ infamous Bacteria.
Pure adrenaline – The Classrooms

- Price: $8.39 (offer ends June 10)
- Platform: PC (Steam)
Let’s get the most chaotic and stressful entry out of the way. The Classrooms. A solid experience that has excellent replayability thanks to its modifiers. This game will keep you on your toes, switch things up when you least expect it, and offer a small learning curve with each level and entity that resides within it.
What’s great about this title compared to others is that although it’s in early access, it still gets large content updates (most recently on June 1). If you’re looking for a challenge where you’re perpetually in danger, look no further than The Classrooms, for terror is right around the corner.
Pure realism – The Complex: Expedition

- Price: $14.99
- Platform: PC (Steam)
For an atmosphere that embodies the fear of liminal space—the loneliness, the fear of being followed, the uncanniness that something isn’t quite right—The Complex: Expedition hits the spot as one of the best walking sim Backrooms games. This entry truly feels like a found footage recording you’re in control of, making it the most realistic Backrooms game for its visuals, sound design, and simplistic gameplay.
It captures the anxiety of isolation, the dread of being followed, and the strange comfort of exploration. Expedition may comfort or freak you out, but you’re bound to feel something in this carefully crafted experience.
Puzzles and friends – Escape the Backrooms

- Price: $7.99 (offer ends June 10)
- Platform: PC (Steam)
The most consistent co-op option is Escape the Backrooms. It offers the most classic indie horror experience you can get in most co-op titles: monsters, puzzles, and a whole lot of running. A plethora of levels, each housing a different threat and solution to beating the sector, Escape the Backrooms is the perfect pick for friend groups looking to have a bit of fun while screaming the entire time. Only a handful of monsters truly shine in this title, but you’re guaranteed to have an entertaining and (at times) challenging experience from start to finish.
Juicy lore – Backrooms: Lost Tape

- Price: $4.94 (offer ends June 10)
- Platform: PC (Steam)
Lost Tape has the most intriguing lore, being the most thought-provoking in its storytelling. Going for realism in its visuals, walking simulator gameplay, and voice acting, Backrooms: Lost Tape has perfected the psychological horror of liminal space. Lost Tape truly transports you into Level 0 as fear manifests, paranoia festers, and anxiety lurks around every corner. Though there isn’t as much freedom in exploration in this one, Lost Tape is a compact story that streamlines the infinite Backrooms experience into a strong narrative you can immerse yourself in.
Uncanny valley – Anemoiapolis

- Price: $8.99
- Platform: PC (Steam)
Anemoiapolis is an interesting one, for it can very much feel like nothing is really happening. And to be honest, nothing is. What makes titles like Anemoiapolis and Pools stay with you is their ability to capture the horrors of liminal space. No monsters, no real threat other than your mind playing tricks on you. Beautiful and realistic scenery with flawless lighting and atmospheric sound design, Anemoiapolis is an excellent choice for those not wanting to be terrified by something pursuing them. However, I cannot promise you won’t feel like you’re being watched the entire time.
Best Backrooms-adjacent game – The Exit 8

- Price: $3.99
- Platform: PC (Steam), Nintendo Switch 1/2, PS4/5, and Xbox Series X/S
Although Exit 8 isn’t a Backrooms game, it is a liminal horror experience. The title takes place in an underground train station where you must locate anomalies to survive. While anomaly-hunting games have existed for years, with the consistent I’m on Observation Duty, The Exit 8 created a trend that combined this spot-the-difference-style gameplay with liminal space and SCP-like horrors.
Exit 8 offers an addictive gameplay loop, good replayability, and intrigue in its mysterious question: How did we get here? Its simplistic and polished design makes it a go-to title that’s easy to follow and creepy in execution. It ticks all the boxes for a bite-sized horror experience.
Creepiest Backrooms-adjacent game – CAPTURED

- Price: $6.45
- Platform: PC (Steam), PS5, and Xbox Series X/S
Just like Exit 8, CAPTURED isn’t sold as a Backrooms game but is heavily inspired by SCP and Skinamarink. Neither is set within one of the hundreds of Backrooms levels, but this title certainly looks like a liminal hellscape. CAPTURED uses lighting, sound design, and the fear of the unknown—everything a good Backrooms game uses to scare its occupant.
CAPTURED has the most intriguing and mysterious story on this list, and it’s one that greatly expands in its sequel. It’s also another anomaly-hunting game, but with a terrifying twist. Entities in this game are truly lethal. If you wanted a game where SCPs are after you as you scan anomalies and watch your sanity meter, then CAPTURED is the best on the market and the scariest on this list.
