Amazon's acquisition of the James Bond franchise has led to a conflict between Jeff Bezos and producer Barbara Broccoli. Here's why Amazon founder Jeff Bezos wants to ‘get rid of' James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli
James Bond is one of the most beloved franchises, and Amazon has now acquired it. Jeff Bezos, the CEO of Amazon seems all elated and excited about the acquisition; and the proof of the same can be seen in his social media posts. However, did you know besides being all enthusiastic about taking over the franchise, he is keenly interested in making one big change? If reports are to be believed, then Jeff Bezos was adamant on firing 007 producer Barbara Broccoli. Reportedly he even told his employees that cost is not an issue, he just wants her gone.
Amazon paid nearly $1 billion for the James Bond franchise. Reportedly, Broccoli used some derogatory remarks against Bezos’ employees and the business tycoon is in no mood to cut her any slack on her words. "Friends" told the WSJ that Broccoli called Amazon executives "idiots" in the Wall Street Journal in December.
According to The Hollywood Report, these words were like the last straw for Jeff. He then instructed his staff to get rid of her at any cost, according to a Daily Beast report.
Broccoli and her half-brother Wilson took over and made sure Bond IP regained its stature following their father's death in 1996. However, no sentimental story seems to affect the Amazon CEO.
The siblings are credited by stars, crew, and fans for the successful return of 007 to the box office, particularly due to Daniel Craig's role as the seventh Bond, which reinvigorated the franchise.
The sale to Amazon surprised Hollywood and its fans, leading many to doubt the likelihood of future high-quality Bond films following the disruption.
It is also worth noting that while Wilson retired, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Broccoli was still considered for the position at Amazon, among the executives whom she had referred to as "idiots."
Meanwhile, Broccoli has also opposed Amazon's plans for prequels and TV spinoffs. However, the company holds the authority to reshape 007 without her. But will this affect the quality of the franchise? This question haunts many cinema lovers and filmmakers.
