Mac Walters shared thisI’m super thrilled for you all! Congratulations, Kris. Very excited to see what y’all come up with!Mac Walters shared thisThis month marks 20 years in game development for me, which I find hard to believe, but… It also makes it feel even more special to finally share that I co-founded Studio Reset with Kaelin Lavallee and Francis Lacuna! We’re a Canadian independent game studio focused on story-rich games built around mystery, perspective, and player discovery. Right now we’re deep in development on our first project, a neon-noir supernatural mystery game I can’t say too much about yet, which feels appropriate for the genre. What I can say is that we’re building the kind of mystery experience we love to play: strange, atmospheric, deeply thought-out, and focused on the satisfaction of actually piecing it all together. If that sounds like your kind of thing, follow us here and on our socials, and sign up for our newsletter on our website. We’ll be sharing more soon! https://lnkd.in/geCcqBnJ https://lnkd.in/gGAvCxgZ

Mac Walters shared thisHeaded to GDC? Curious about the future of games? Or Quantum? Definitely recommend you stop by and give the arcade a try.Mac Walters shared thisGearing up for the quantum arcade at GDC Festival of Gaming 2026 with Laguna College of Art and Design and Caltech's IQIM. Bloch Invaders, a shoot-em-up on the bloch sphere https://lnkd.in/gK753EZp, will be the third game we show. Check it out! And if you're at GDC next week, stop by the LCAD booth and say hi. We can chat about how to add genuine quantum effects to your game projects, and you can play the arcade!

Mac Walters shared thisFor the past year, I've been collaborating with Chris Cantwell and others as part of a small group discussing and envisioning the future of games and quantum. It's been a revelation - reminiscent of the gaming industry when innovation was central to every project, and we found ourselves in truly unknown waters, wondering if our ideas were even possible! If you're curious about quantum games, or just love Tetris-style puzzles and want to experience a novel take on the genre - check out Quantris and offer your feedback. #Quantum #QuantumGames #GameDevMac Walters shared thisIt has been a while since I’ve posted; I’ve been busy building. I’m excited to finally share Quantris, a quantum variant of classic block-puzzle games. I developed it, with generous support from Caltech IQIM and Laguna College of Art and Design, to give players access to genuine quantum interaction in a Tetris-style game. It started as a proof of concept for the Quantum Forge toolset and allows players to utilize superposition, entanglement, and measurements as strategic gameplay tools that unlock significant scoring opportunities. Initially, I intended to create just a prototype and then move on to other games. But somewhere between finalizing the prototype of Quantris and starting to develop another concept, a group of very experienced Tetris players joined the Discord community and provided incredible feedback, which has really turned this project into something cool. I am looking for more testers to help fine-tune the new player experience and provide feedback on upcoming game modes. Check it out at quantris.io and join the small but active Discord community! #quantum #quantumgames #gamedev #indiegame #gaming

Mac Walters reacted on thisMac Walters reacted on thisIn 2011, on my first trip to the US, I walked into a GameStop and bought three games: Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2 and GTA IV. I also bought a Mass Effect novel. When I moved a few years ago, I still found that novel on my bookshelf. Mass Effect was the first big console blockbuster for me. It shaped my taste in games, many of my decisions later on, and in some ways my destiny. (Back then, I wasn't even in the games industry yet.) Over the years, I have been lucky to work with many great people from BioWare. I trust them almost unconditionally. Today is a sad day. Thank you to BioWare and its people. This will not be the end of the story.

Mac Walters reacted on thisMac Walters reacted on thisQuantris has a Steam page. Valve approved it this week, and its listed as Coming Soon to Early Access. Quantris is a falling-block puzzle game where the blocks follow quantum mechanics. A Hadamard block puts a piece into superposition, and you can entangle other pieces with the Entanglement block, or by using some Tetris skill with spins. A line clears only when every block in it has been measured and they came out the same way: all there, or all gone. The state runs on the same math a quantum computer uses, and you don't need any physics to play. It started as a browser game, and a lot of what's in it came from the early players on our Discord. The Steam version is the whole game, including couch co-op and head-to-head, which the browser version doesn't have. Early Access is how I want to keep building it with a bigger group while its still evolving, and the online multiplayer modes need a lot more testing than a small group can give them. A wishlist helps more than anything else I could ask for right now. Wishlist on Steam: https://lnkd.in/g5HUmfG4 Play it free in your browser: https://lnkd.in/g9eQnuu9

Mac Walters reacted on thisMac Walters reacted on thisPrincipal Yan Huaxing passed away on September 12. He was eighty. I will always remember his face and his laugh. He ran Wuhan Foreign Languages School, where I went as a teenager, for most of two decades. He took the job in 1991, in a system that gave him very little room to change anything, and he changed it anyway. He recruited the best teachers and the strongest students in Wuhan. He built an environment where we were free, and where we drove ourselves. Piece by piece, he gathered the resources to build a new campus. He was a dreamer, a strategist, and a reformer, and he built the golden age of our school. He showed me early what good things look like. What good values look like. What action and courage look like. He has been my role model ever since. What I most want to share are a few moments with him. I ran an open English Corner on the school lawn. He spotted it, came trotting over with a big grin to watch, clapped me on the shoulder, and said "Good. Good. Good." — the way old Chinese men do when they are truly pleased. Then he walked off, still grinning. At the end of my first year of high school, I went to find him on my own. "I placed in the top ten of my year in both the midterms and the finals. I'd like to transfer into the competition track." He walked me straight to the head of academics. "This is one of our best students. Please help him transfer." In my second year, a new teacher planned to keep running extra classes after the midterms. I ran into him on the way to the canteen and told him what I thought. "We've been studying without a break for a long time. It might be better to go home and reset after the exams." That afternoon, the extra classes were cancelled. At my wedding, we were honored to have him as our witness. He stood up and said I was a sunflower — full of courage, always turned toward the light. I could not keep it together. Once my career settled down, I went back to Wuhan every year to see him. Last year he was still reading and writing every day, still playing table tennis. I would bring a few old classmates and my parents along and we'd have a few drinks with him. I just wanted him to know he was loved, and how grateful I was. I am not him. But I am certain he lived a full and remarkable life. In our alumni group, so many people have written to say he changed the course of their lives. I miss him. But what a run it was.

Losing Bioware is an incredibly sad day for not only the game industry and everyone who has lost their jobs this week but particularly for the Canadian games industry. Bioware has made many games that are on my top ten list of most loved games. Mass Effect was on my 9 grid of the most influential games to my career. But I also recognize that Bioware had lost it's way over the past ten years, and that it eventually struggled to find it's footing under the umbrella of EA. We are seeing (as we did in 2008) so many of these iconic independent studios that were purchased by larger companies not succeed after acquisition and I worry that we aren't having these hard honest conversations around "why" It is too easy to blame "corporate interests" blah blah blah. I am not interesting in those conversations. What I am interested in? How do we ensure that acquisitions empower and expand creativity, innovation AND sustainability for these studios - for both the acquirer and the acquired? How do we ensure that the bureaucracy of the parent company doesn't stifle the incredible talent of the acquired, and how do we ensure that the more mature systems of the parent company are used to accelerate the acquired studio? (and not just make the smaller studio more expensive to run!) There is a nimbleness to these studios that larger companies could learn from, and there is financial rigour and organizational process that many smaller studios need to adopt to survive. We need these conversations to be happening more often and more honestly, if we are going to weather this storm.

#ThrowbackThursday "Experience the ultimate experience like no other experience experienced!" Hanging out with longtime collaborators Andrés Rignell and Christoffer Glans yesterday reminded me of one of my favourite projects: the Demeo PC Edition launch trailer for Resolution Games. More and more XR game studios are branching out to additional platforms, and Resolution was one of the first to make the leap. Our challenge was: how do you make a fun, compelling live-action trailer for a PC game? See for yourself. Headset not included.

This is excellent news! The Government of Canada has announced ongoing funding of $660.5 million over five years through Budget 2025 to advance equality, inclusion and safety for women, girls and 2SLGBTQI+ people. At Simply Sweet Games (SSG) we believe successful games are built with diverse teams, inclusive design and broad audience perspectives. This kind of investment helps strengthen the entire Canadian creative tech ecosystem and can open more doors for women and gender-diverse creators, while supporting safe workplaces for all. We’re excited to continue our work to build a welcoming, safe culture at SSG and to partner with, hire and uplift talent from communities that have been under-represented in games. Congratulations to all the organizations and advocates who’ve kept pushing for this. It’s a strong step forward for Canada’s economy, our industry and our community. 🍁 👏 #genderequity #canadianvalues #womenintech #inclusion #gamedev #canada

With the growing interest in indie games right now, this feels especially relevant. Chris Zukowski’s "How to Market a Game" continues to be one of the strongest resources for developers building PC and Steam games. In his latest blog post and video, he makes a compelling point that game “trends” haven’t fundamentally changed since the 1990s – people have always liked games, across a wide range of genres. What has changed is where audiences concentrate and which genres consistently perform better on platforms like Steam. Chris breaks this down from a marketing-first perspective, which is critical, because no matter how good your game is, success as an indie developer depends heavily on understanding your audience and reaching them effectively. BioWare has been a huge part of the story behind Broadcast Games. Our co-founder, Ken Thain, helped bring the legendary Mass Effect, and Dragon Age series to life, several members of our team once called BioWare home, and many of us grew up with the games that defined a generation. We've been deeply hurt by this news, both as former BioWare developers and as gamers who grew up loving the worlds and stories these teams created. The friendships, experiences, and people we carry from BioWare have helped shape the studio were building today. They remind us why we love making games, why the people behind them matter, and why we believe so strongly in building a future where great teams can grow and create together. Our hearts go out to the developers, their families, and everyone affected by this news. To our former colleagues, friends, and everyone who contributed to BioWares extraordinary legacy, you have our deepest gratitude, respect, and love. We're here for you, we see you, and we will support you however we can. With love, The Broadcast Games Team

North American Games Industry Summit (NAGIS) Powered By Xsolla just wrapped. And the conversation it started is even bigger than the event itself. Alberta hasn't had a provincial game industry incentive in over seven years. Other provinces have. NAGIS put the spotlight back on what's being built here and gave the industry a louder, more unified platform to have that conversation. Ronnie Villanueva from Edmonton Screen said it before the event even opened — the advocacy work was already being re-examined because of NAGIS. What's happened in Edmonton this week (and over the weekend at GCC) matters provincially. 🎧 Full episode on GGE: https://lnkd.in/eYkUcfYa Edmonton Screen | Digital Alberta
