Luke Rideout reposted thisLuke Rideout reposted thisThis week has been full of ups and downs. While it was incredibly exciting to release Mythforce, we have had to also do some staff restructuring due to a lack of funding for new projects. While it's hard to see our staff go, and we know the industry is being hit hard right now, I encourage anyone in my connections who currently has open roles to consider my incredible staff as candidates. They are supremely talented, resourceful and resilient. I cannot express how proud I am to have been able to work alongside them. Links to my team members will be in the comments

Luke Rideout shared thisLuke Rideout shared thisWe are really excited about #Mythforce coming out on all platforms on September 12th. We have had an epic time creating the soundtrack for the game. It brings back that 80's Saturday morning cartoon feeling. Beamdog has been amazing to work with and they really knocked this game out of the park. Stay tuned for some behind-the-scenes on the soundtrack and some of the crazy things we learned along the way. #gameaudio #soundtrack #80s https://lnkd.in/gzUG4ZkD

With the exciting milestones we’ve recently hit, such as releasing our first original IP, MythForce, and our acquisition by Aspyr Media, none of this would be possible without the hard work and passion of our employees. By embracing adventure, finding the fun, crafting quality, and more, we’re so lucky to grow with them in our current and future projects. Please join us in congratulating our amazing team today! 👏 #CertifiedPride #GPTWCertified Great Place to Work® Canada

Luke Rideout shared thisLuke Rideout shared thisI love this quote from our fearless leader Trent Oster regarding our philosophy about remote work. “Don’t feel like you got to come in here just because some suit in a chair decides that everybody needs to go to the office. That’s not what we’re about. We’re about allowing creative people to be creative,” .. “Honestly, if there are four people in the office for the rest of the days that we rent the office, I’m fine with that. As long as those people are getting a lot of benefit from (working from home), and it’s working, we’re doing things right.” https://lnkd.in/gGcchycY If you want to join our remote/ hybrid remote people forward team, we've got a ton of open roles. Luke Rideout liked thisLuke Rideout liked thisSo 400 people at BioWare are gone. Out in the cold with so many others. I try very hard not to curse at any time but especially in public. Unfortunately for my vocabulary and the delicate sensibilities of some who read this I can’t control myself. Hell, I don’t want to control myself. BioWare is more than just another studio. For decades it’s played a central role in the history of our medium. They, for many years, as effectively as any studio, married art and commerce. Their work changed things. Now comes the cursing. Cover your eyes if you must. This is such bad news, such a devastating historic event all I can say is that it’s utter bullshit. Anyone who participated in this travesty should be ashamed. Actually, maybe all of the people who participated — the folks in suits (real or virtual) should lose their damn jobs. I ask them to ponder this: What do you contribute to gaming? What price do you pay for failure? I’d love to see THEM on the unemployment line instead of the people who do real work. Why is it always the do-ers and makers who pay the price? Someone explain that to me! I wish I had more curse words.

Luke Rideout liked thisLuke Rideout liked thisThis past week, BioWare finally closed its doors. After thirty some years, I will be living in a world where there is no building anywhere with that logo and that history. You can scour Reddit and other sites to see debates on whether the end of BioWare could have been prevented. Why, they ask, did BioWare ever even get sold to Electronic Arts. They question whether it was the studio’s fault or Electronic Arts or EA’s new owners. The truth is, every story has a beginning, a middle, and an end. Every company, like anything in this world, will eventually go away. To understand the journey you have been on, you must always get to the end of the story and when it is in such a tragic way, there can be sadness, there can be melancholy, and there is always grief. My heart goes out to the individuals who were trying to continue the legacy with the new Mass Effect game. My heart goes out to those who lost their job supporting the studio. These are friends of mine. But I will leave you also with hope. BioWare was never just a logo on a wall of a building. BioWare was the sum of all the people who graced its halls. If you ever sit through the credits on a BioWare game, like any modern game, you will see a cast of hundreds. BioWare is the sum of all the people who have been touched by any of the games I or others helped to ship. BioWare is reflected in the people who we influenced to get married, who were helped through dark times, who were left inspired. For me, I occasionally say or do something and I stop in my tracks. I realize that I just said something or did something that Ray or Greg might have done or said. When I’ve given a rousing speech I sometimes emulate Trent. And I can go on and on, the list of people who have made me who I am and who have changed my life that originated in BioWare would be like one of our game credits: Too long, and scroll far farther than you have time to listen. BioWare is a story worth telling and it is a story best heard from those who lived it. Thank you BioWare. I miss you all. My series of podcasts interviewing the wonderful people I worked with will continue. Craig Miller: https://lnkd.in/dqp7WP2j Georg Zoeller and Emmanuel Lusinchi: https://lnkd.in/dccFfK6e David Chan: https://lnkd.in/dCgugqrM Brent Knowles: https://lnkd.in/dYq59TKp Trent Oster: https://lnkd.in/dgPgRgPz Tobyn Manthorpe: https://lnkd.in/dNUw9Rt8 And I will add more, the list is long! The picture was taken on the week I left, in BioWare's hey day. It's our games room in South Edmonton and I have no idea why we were all gathered for lunch. This picture alone is one of a thousand stories.

The first day of a journey in game development that would take me across this continent and back again. When I tell people all the studios I've worked at, BioWare is the one that gets their attention. Known for their amazing games, made my incredibly talented people. And they gave me a chance all those years ago. I'll never forget that.

Luke Rideout liked thisLuke Rideout liked thishttps://lnkd.in/gRSJ5n4R If this is true, here's my pitch: Buy Bioware, for the Mass Effect and Dragon Age IP. Buy Beamdog to reconnect with the legacy titles by merging the two companies. Place me as the CEO of the new org as someone who lived the entire journey of the company and knows the keys to the successes of the company and the mistakes made along the way. Fund the studio effectively to ship a great Mass Effect game. Push the Mass Effect movie hard, ensure the people involved understand the IP and what the audience love about it. The rest of my strategic plans can wait for after I'm in as CEO ;-)EA Looking To Sell BioWare And Other IPs Following Saudi Arabia Takeover, Claims InsiderEA Looking To Sell BioWare And Other IPs Following Saudi Arabia Takeover, Claims Insider

Luke Rideout liked thisLuke Rideout liked thisThis has been an extremely difficult week at Obsidian. Not only have I had to say goodbye to some amazing game developers, but I've had to say goodbye to some of my best friends. I truly feel for every one of them. Know that if you are looking to hire one of these former Obsidian devs, you are hiring some of the best people around - both professionally and personally. Another difficult aspect is having to see a bunch of cold take artists coming out of the woodwork to talk about what Obsidian is or what it isn't. The number of times I've seen people, with no understanding of who has worked on our previous games or what they contributed, talk about how Obsidian isn't who they used to be... is staggering. Most of the time they are not just wrong, but spreading an enormous amount of misinformation. In most circumstances, the people in lead or director roles are the same people that worked on games like The Outer Worlds, Pillars of Eternity, and New Vegas. Like, literally the same people. The through line from KotOR2 to our current games is pretty clear. Is Obsidian the same as it was 20 years ago? No, of course not. Nothing stays the same. But the DNA at Obsidian is the same as it always was. The same DNA that created KotOR, New Vegas, NWN2, and Stick of Truth. I'm extremely proud of our history and I am also excited for who we have become. Just remember, when you are seeing people spouting off about Obsidian, running their mouths about who we are now vs. what we were then, you are listening to someone crow about something with zero insight into how a game is made and who contributed to our previous games.

Luke Rideout liked thisLuke Rideout liked thisA little personal news! Mel and I have pulled up stakes in Edmonton and have headed to Vancouver Island with plans to settle mid-island! While Edmonton has been a great place to live the last 10 years—a solid game development scene, amazing local food and beer, and a vibrant event culture, we’ve called it quits on these minus 40 winters. I’m looking forward to reconnecting with old friends and colleagues on Vancouver Island as well as game devs in Vancouver and the rest of BC! I’d love to connect with industry folks mid-to-north island to talk shop. Feel free to say hi if you’re in the area or tag people you know up this way. #BCGameDev #CanadianGameIndustry #Moving

Edmonton’s BioWare is shutting down after more than three decades, ending a chapter for one of Canada’s best-known game studios. The developer behind Baldur’s Gate, Dragon Age, and Mass Effect announced that work on its next Mass Effect game will also stop. The closure follows parent company Electronic Arts (EA)’ decision to cut staff and close the studio. EA acquired BioWare in 2007. Founded in 1995, BioWare helped establish Canada’s reputation for ambitious, story-driven games. Its shutdown adds to a difficult period for the domestic gaming industry, following Ubisoft’s closures of its Winnipeg and Halifax studios and the resulting job losses. https://lnkd.in/gKySSayG

The Calgary Games Kiln invites the Calgary game development community its first community plenary session! For aspiring, emerging and established developers, students, hobbyists, and enthusiasts alike; join us on Monday, November 17th at 5:30pm at Platform Calgary (East Annex) for our first guest speaker – Jason Della Rocca. In the first of these plenaries, Jason Della Rocca will talk about new timelines for success in the indie game ecosystem. Specifically: what is the most obvious and direct path to success for game developers today? There is always too much work to do, too many demands on our time as smaller indie teams. How do we even prioritize and optimize for the greatest chance of success? This session will reveal the most direct path and approach for succeeding in today's hyper competitive game market. This session is part of the Calgary Games Kiln program, a proof-of-concept initiative powered by Calgary Economic Development. The incubator-style program currently supports five Calgary-based, early-stage game developers, with a focus on market validation and commercial viability. Importantly, the Kiln also aims to support the Calgary games ecosystem by way of plenary activities extended to non-program participants. We'd also like to thank Nordicity and Digital Alberta for helping bring these events to our vibrant games ecosystem here in YYC.

In June 2016, a small Montreal team launched the CMF-funded project Dead by Daylight, with a small publisher behind them. Ten years later, the game has surpassed 70 million players and grown into a full franchise, with graphic novels, new titles, and a film in the works. In January, Ubisoft laid off the entirety of its Halifax studio, just weeks after staff unionized with 74 percent support. As Isaac Peltz reports, the move raises urgent questions about union power and corporate accountability in Canada’s gaming sector. https://lnkd.in/gwV-VAv5

Creative BC is putting $1M into local game studios. This is about keeping teams intact between projects. Scaling is usually tied to publisher milestones. That leaves teams exposed when timelines shift. Regional funding softens the burn and keeps the floor running. Canada continues to get this right. Any government serious about supporting game development should be paying attention. #gamedev #gameindustry #indiedev #canada #gamedevelopment

The next Mass Effect game won’t make it out of BioWare. Development on the game is stopping as the Edmonton studio shuts down. The closure is a particularly stark ending for a company that helped turn Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and Baldur’s Gate into globally recognized franchises (and put Canada's gaming industry on the map as it did). #CDNTech #Gaming
