Steve Kosic liked thisSteve Kosic liked thisAfter 37 years in the IT industry, I’ve decided it’s time to hang up my boots and head into retirement. It’s certainly been a wild ride since 1989, with plenty of changes along the way — from the pre-internet days, through dial-up arriving at a whopping 56kbps, to the world of technology we know today. Back then, the leading business software packages were WordPerfect and Lotus 1-2-3, before Microsoft became the dominant player. And security? Well… “Could the last person leaving the building please lock the door?” 😄 Over those 37 years, I’ve been fortunate to work with some amazing leaders and mentors — thank you for your guidance and support. I’ve also had the privilege of leading and working alongside some fantastic teams. To everyone I’ve worked with over the years, thank you for being part of the journey. And, of course, a huge thank you to all my customers, past and present. Without you, we might still be back in the ’80s, locking the front door on our way out! There have been great times, challenging times, lifelong friendships and plenty of memories along the way. I wouldn’t change a thing. So, what’s next? Lots of travel, plenty of time with family and friends, and hopefully a little less time worrying about emails, forecasts and targets! Thanks to everyone who has been part of my 37-year journey . Steve Kosic liked thisSince coming to Riverbed I've spoken to several people who seem to think that with today's massive bandwidth, cloud hosting and TLS everywhere, that our acceleration technologies are no longer needed - but nothing could be further from the truth! It doesn't matter how many lanes of traffic if you have if you can only drive at the speed limit and chatty protocols that traverse these links have a multiplicative impact on performance that Steelheads solve. We've actually been able to accelerate TLS traffic for a long time but it was a bit of an effort to setup, but now with our new Keystone Server, we make it simple to configure and manage bringing optimised performance improvements to virtually all of your traffic. Steve Kosic liked thisSteve Kosic liked thisThis week marks my 20th year in the public service so I've been reflecting on how incredibly fortunate I have been to work on some fascinating challenges and with so many amazingly talented people. Moving through technical to leadership roles, I've had the opportunity to support athletes at the AIS and those competing at Olympic and Commonwealth Games, contribute to aviation safety, help improve how businesses interact with government, work on whole of gov authentication and digital platforms, support our national cultural institutions, Federal Budget processes, foreign investment regulation, national statistical infrastructure, help introduce the monthly CPI, and now support the work of the Federal Parliament and all parliamentarians. Two things stand out most for me, people and opportunity. I've worked with incredible people, leaders, mentors and team who have challenged me, supported me and taught me far more than I thought. There are a few which have made a significant mark on my career by taking the time to encourage, mentor or sponsor my development. That makes a difference in the moment, but also over the long term. The public service is so incredibly broad and has so many opportunities which just cannot be done elsewhere. I've thoroughly enjoyed learning the breadth of critical services each of the agencies I've worked in and how I can contribute to driving that forward. If you're still reading, here are a few lessons I've learnt along the way. 1. Leaders can change the trajectory of your career. The best leaders invest in people and provide guidance, coaching, mentorship and a well timed challenge to push you. Poor leaders have an impact too, in showing you the contrasting impact it can have on morale, productivity and wellbeing. Pay it forward to others! 2. If you're standing still, you're going backwards. This used to be a reference for technology but is increasingly true for all organisations. The wave of each shift from servers to virtualisation to cloud, SaaS, zero trust and now AI is shortening and the constant is the need to keep learning and embracing change. 3. Public service is deeply rewarding. There's something special about working on systems and services that millions of Australians rely on. Knowing your work contributes to better outcomes for our community is a great motivator! Shout to the ABS team for the Census this week, and to those at DPS for another great sitting week here in Parliament. 4. The next 10 years are difficult to predict. If you'd asked me 10 years ago what today would look like, I wouldn't have predicted much of what we're now experiencing. The pace of change from AI is already outstripping many predictions and testing the status quo. I'm excited about the next decade and how technological disruption will help improve services to the community, even if none of us can say exactly how just yet. #Leadership #Technology #PublicService #DigitalTransformation #AI #AustralianPublicService
