🔒 Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea: Third-Party Risk in 2025 Third-party risk management today almost feels like being stuck between the devil and the deep blue sea. Recent incidents, from AWS outages and software supply chain attacks to Qantas’ third-party breach, remind us that our resilience is only as strong as our weakest link. And history has taught us plenty: ⚙️ Google fumbled a cloud configuration, impacting UniSuper. ⚙️ SolarWinds pushed an update containing malicious code to 18,000 customers. ⚙️ CrowdStrike issued a faulty update that triggered the Blue Screen of Death across 8 million Windows systems. There is no longer any question about the likelihood or impact of these events, only how prepared we are. Here are some uncomfortable but necessary questions: 🧭 You can’t protect what you don’t know you have. How well do you know your supply chain? 🧠 A recent study by Anthropic, in collaboration with the UK AI Security Institute and the Alan Turing Institute, found that as few as 250 malicious documents can introduce a backdoor vulnerability into an AI model. How are you assessing AI risk in your organisation? 💬 “We’ve transferred the risk to a third party” doesn’t hold when your reputation is on the line. Are you evaluating the consequences of that transfer? 🌐 Your controls are only as effective as those of your third-, fourth-, and even fifth-party providers. How well do you know your attack surface?
