It is with a heavy heart that I share the sad news that Bernie passed away on the 8th of August. Bernie was a great friend of mine and a fantastic work colleague to many of you. Bernie's funeral will be held at St Joseph's Catholic Church in Brighton, Adelaide at 2pm on the 3rd of September.

At ANZ, Bucchianeri has been tasked with leading the bank's information and cyber security strategy and "driving a threat-led, risk-informed approach across the enterprise", as stated by the lender. Additionally, ANZ says he will "work closely with teams across the bank to manage risk and uplift cyber maturity and capability", reporting to the group's chief information officer, Donald Patra. To Andrew Irvine and Ross McEwan, thank you for your leadership over my time at NAB. It set the tone for everything we were able to achieve. To Patrick Wright, thank you for your leadership, mentorship, and friendship over these five years, and for your incredible drive in achieving what many said was impossible. To my team, thank you for the role you played in building a security function I am exceptionally proud of. It was an honour to lead a team spanning three continents, unified under one mission of protecting people, assets, and information. I'm proud of what we accomplished together, and prouder still of who we became along the way. I wish you all the very best, and I'll be cheering from the sidelines. I will be taking a much needed break over the next few months to spend time with my family before joining ANZ as Chief Information Security Officer. I am looking forward to the next chapter and excited about what's to come at ANZ.

Why Your Digital Fraud Strategy Will Fail Against The New "Hybrid" Adversary We are still trying to fight online organised crime like it’s a strict hierarchy. Yesterday, I joined Deloitte, Splunk, and Amazon Web Services (AWS) and our clients in Melbourne to discuss the convergence of cybersecurity and fraud. Guest speaker Professor Chad Whelan (Deakin University) provided context that complicates how we manage risk. Prof. Whelan’s research found we are now facing a "Hybrid" adversary. The Insight: The Criminal Marketplace We aren't just facing structured syndicates anymore. We are facing adaptive ecosystems where: 🔸 Core Groups act as service providers (e.g., Ransomware-as-a-Service). 🔸 Affiliates work as independent contractors. 🔸 Competitors collaborate and compete simultaneously. The Path Forward In this landscape, my advice is clear: it is not enough to simply understand what is targeting your business (i.e., organised crime). You need to understand who is targeting your business (i.e., structured syndicates or adaptive ecosystems), otherwise you can't effectively mitigate them. You need to know: 🔸 Is this a structured group or a loose collective? 🔸 How do they operate? 🔸 What are the weaknesses in their business model? The Takeaway: You cannot detect and disrupt what you do not understand.
