Jan Zeilinga GAICD CISSP shared thisThis one is personal. Timothy Sim joins Infotrust as Head of Identity Security — and I couldn't be more pleased to share this one. Timothy and I worked together at First Point Global for over a decade. Australia's first dedicated identity firm, acquired by KPMG in 2015. In that time, I watched him develop into one of the sharpest identity practitioners in the country. He didn't drift. He stayed in identity, went deep, and kept growing. That's rare. Today, we call it Identity Security, not Identity Management — because the question has shifted from who has access to who is actively being exploited. Credentials are now the primary attack vector. Governance alone doesn't stop that. Identity is complex. Most people move on — into broader security, into management, into other things. Timothy stayed because he genuinely understood what was being built and why it mattered. That instinct, combined with a decade-plus of hands-on program delivery, is exactly what Infotrust needed. He joins at a moment when the practice is moving from capability to market. We have the vendor relationships, the architecture, the managed service model and the pipeline. Jan Zeilinga GAICD CISSP shared thisI spent over two years as CISO at a university. The AI adoption conversation was already happening then — staff using AI for research, students using it for coursework, no policy in place and no visibility into what data was going where. That was two years ago. The pace has accelerated significantly since. The Canvas breach in May this year hit confirmed Australian university institutions — 275 million student records globally. The attack vector was identity and credential compromise. But the data that was exposed? Much of it shouldn't have been accessible in the first place. That's the intersection Dean writes to — it's not just about stopping the breach. It's about knowing what you have, who can access it, and what happens when an AI tool touches it. Universities have a specific problem. Open networks by design. High user churn. Microsoft Purview licences already paid for and largely unused. Staff and students adopting AI tools faster than any governance framework can track. The good news: the framework and the tooling exist. Most universities are already paying for the capability. The gap is activation and strategy — which is exactly what this piece addresses. Within moments, a hacker has infiltrated critical systems, disrupting operations and triggering a major police investigation. Thankfully, it was only a simulation, where 40 of Victoria’s brightest young minds in IT were put to the test as they played the role of police. The re_B00TCMP program, run by Joint Police Cybercrime Coordination Centre (JPC3) in partnership with Australian Federal Police, and local police forces is helping to build the next generation of cyber experts – giving young people hands-on experience responding to real-world cyber incidents. As we approach the end of financial year, cyber criminals are ramping up phishing and tax-related scams, targeting both individuals and organisations. From fake ATO emails to suspicious refund offers, now is the time to stay alert. The framing you've landed on — cyber incident as care disruption, not IT failure — is exactly the shift that moves boards from treating this as a technology budget line to treating it as a governance obligation. The shadow AI point is the one I keep coming back to. Frontline care staff are already solving real problems with whatever tools work — that instinct is good. The risk is that resident data, care notes and family contacts end up in public models before anyone has written a policy. Getting ahead of it means offering safe options before unsafe ones become habit. In aged care, a cyber incident isn't an IT problem, it's a care disruption. When systems go down, rosters disappear, medication records are locked, and families lose contact. Aged care providers now face 10× more cyber attacks than hospitals. A few things I shared: 🔐 Get the basics right — MFA, patching, backups, data protection, incident playbooks, and supplier security. Six controls, consistently applied. 👤 Make training relevant — phishing sims about rosters and Medicare land. Generic training doesn't. 🧩 Support people through change — frameworks tell you what to do. ADKAR helps people actually do it. 🤖 Get ahead of AI risk — Shadow AI is already here. Set clear rules before resident data ends up in public models. 🏥 Aim for resilience, not just compliance — compliance is the floor. Care continuing through an incident is the goal. Cybersecurity in aged care protects care delivery, residents' dignity, staff confidence, and the trust families place in us every day. Organisations need to translate awareness into action. What resonated with me is that while AI is changing the speed and scale of cyber threats, the foundations of resilience remain largely the same: strong access controls, timely patching, resilient backups, tested response plans, and effective third-party risk management. In governance and risk roles, it is easy to focus on emerging threats. The bigger challenge is often ensuring the fundamentals are consistently implemented, regularly tested, and well understood at the board and executive level. A worthwhile read for anyone involved in cyber security, risk management, operational resilience, or AI governance. Infotrust's Serhiy Kozlov and Robert Nad attended the event and shared insights from discussions across government, healthcare, education and the broader public sector. The common theme was a shift from "What could AI do?" to "How do we scale AI safely and responsibly?" Key themes included: • Moving from pilots to organisation-wide transformation • Embedding governance, security and responsible AI from day one • Using cloud platforms to enable scalable AI adoption • Building workforce capability alongside technology investment • Focusing on measurable outcomes, from improved citizen services to fraud detection and operational efficiency At Infotrust, these conversations align closely with what we're seeing across the market. Jan Zeilinga GAICD CISSP liked thisJan Zeilinga GAICD CISSP liked thisAfter several years in global identity roles - most recently leading Professional Services for APJ at Ping Identity (and ForgeRock before the merger) - I'm excited to share that I've joined Infotrust as Head of Identity Security. Global roles have a particular rhythm: brilliant colleagues, fascinating problems, and a time zone spread that means "quick call" is a relative term (looking at you, 11pm APJ/EMEA overlap ☕🌙). After 30 years in identity and security, I decided it was time to trade the frequent-flyer points for actual dinner-table time with my family, without losing the parts of this industry I genuinely love. Infotrust gives me the best of both: the chance to build an Identity practice from the ground up, with all the technical challenge that involves, but based here in Sydney and without a 3am Slack notification deciding whether I'm having a good day. I'm looking forward to working with Jan Zeilinga again, and with the broader Infotrust team as we build out a practice focused on solving real identity security problems for Australian organisations.
