UK Government announces £210m Cyber Action Plan 📢 The UK Government has announced a new £210m Cyber Action Plan aimed at strengthening cyber security and digital resilience across public services, including healthcare, benefits and tax systems. The plan focuses on improving visibility of cyber risk, strengthening incident response, and increasing resilience across government as reliance on digital services continues to grow. Commenting on the announcement, Stew Parkin, Global CTO at Assured Data Protection, said: “The £210m Cyber Action Plan signals that the government recognizes the scale and urgency of the cybersecurity challenge. Why the new 2026-2028 NSW Cyber Security Strategy should matter for NSW Local Government 👇 The NSW Government recently released its Cyber Security Strategy for 2026–2028. While it’s technically written for state agencies, for those working in or supporting Local Government e.g. ARIC's, the "indirect" impact is noteworthy. Even though compliance isn't mandatory for NSW councils, the strategy provides many useful and important points/ tips of how council's should protect their communities. Here are my three key takeaways for councils: 1️⃣ Operational Technology (OT) is the new front line. With a major focus on securing critical infrastructure, councils managing water, waste, and smart city IoT need to align with these state-level standards to remain resilient (and insurable). Why? If councils fall behind in E8 maturity while the rest of the NSW public sector moves to identity-based security, a council becomes the "path of least resistance" for attackers. 2️⃣ Strength in the "All-of-Government" Network. Cyber Security NSW is opening up more proactive support to Council's. By adopting their 24-hour reporting standards and using the centralised threat intelligence, Council's can move from reactive to proactive. 3️⃣ Secure-by-Design Procurement. Third party data breaches remain one of the higher risk areas. NSW is pushing for "zero trust" and "secure-by-design" principles. As the supply chain shifts to meet these requirements, councils have an opportunity to modernise third-party/ vendor risk management. 🤔 Here are 3 questions Audit, Risk & Improvement Committee members in local government should ask. 1. Is there a plan to align to the NSW Government Cyber Security Strategy and 'Zero Trust' transition? 2. How secure is our Operational Technology (OT)? When was it last reviewed by an expert or pen test performed? 3. Are our incident reporting protocols synced with Cyber Security NSW? When did we last test them?
