Dr Monica Trujillo shared thisLast night I had the pleasure of attending the Patients Australia Gala Dinner in Melbourne to celebrate the 2026 Patients Choice Awards and was joined by the wonderful Annette Schmiede as a judge for the Outstanding Digital Health Service Award . It was such a privilege to review the inspiring work being done to improve patient outcomes through digital innovation. It really reminds me of why I got into health tech in the first place- if we do it right patients and clinicians can really benefit from it. Congratulations to Founder and CEO,Dr. Padma Gadiyar and the team at Smilo.ai whose AI-powered oral health screening tool was recognised with this year's award. Amazing work !! Designed to support early detection and screening in aged care and disability services, the solution is a great example of how technology can help improve access to care and deliver better health outcomes. Congratulations on this well-deserved achievement. And then, to top it off, we had the added bonus of hearing Cathy Freeman talk about her journey. Such powerful and centred, wise words. And now, super ready for DHF !Dr Monica Trujillo shared thisBefore my LinkedIn gets spammed with DHF posts, thought I’d share this… (and it’s not digital health related 🫣) I spent tonight listening to Michelle Obama live with the wonderful Dr Monica Trujillo and I can’t stop thinking about so many things she shared. The story that hit the hardest- her college counselor told her she wasn’t “Princeton material.” She got in anyway despite the lack of support. Her line in response? “There’s nothing I like better than somebody doubting me.” I felt that one deeply. I’m sure many share that feeling of being underestimated. If you’ve ever been quietly written off, told to aim lower, watched someone else get the benefit of the doubt you had to earn twice over, you know exactly what she’s talking about. And what she said next is the part I want to frame somewhere… Once she got to Princeton, she realised “there are a lot of people at tables of power who don’t deserve to be there any more than I do. They just come from a place where they’re expected to be there.” That’s it. A few other moments I’m taking home with me: On owning your story before someone else writes it for you: “I had to define myself faster than other people could define me.” On failure: “The more you fail, the more you practice getting over the failure. I’m just really good at recovering these days.” On “when they go low, we go high” she clarified it doesn’t mean you don’t feel the rage. You just don’t put it on a mic or loudspeaker. Go low at your kitchen table if you need to. Then show up high where it counts. True leadership in this day and age is about going high. And on marriage and life looking perfect from the outside, she was refreshingly honest that 30 years includes plenty of hard ones (nearly 10 of them!), and pretending otherwise sets the next generation up to fail and bail the moment things get real. Walked out feeling so motivated, a bit fired up, completely inspired and reminded that being underestimated isn’t the problem. It’s the fuel to our fire 🔥

Dr Monica Trujillo liked thisDr Monica Trujillo liked thisIndustry partnerships are often discussed in terms of funding, commercialisation or collaboration structures. But a recurring theme from last week's Digital Health and Informatics Network workshop, "You've Got Them on the Hook! Making Industry Partnerships Successful", was much simpler: Start by understanding the problem that needs solving. From health services and researchers to commercial partners and patients, impact looks different depending on who you're talking to. Successful partnerships begin when those perspectives are understood early and aligned around a shared purpose. Panel speakers highlighted several important considerations: ⭐ Is there a genuine need for what you're developing? ⭐What value does the partnership create for all parties involved? ⭐How will the work translate into real-world service delivery and outcomes? ⭐How do you balance purpose with the need to demonstrate return on investment? One insight that particularly resonated was the idea of aiming for "pragmatic impact". Great partnerships are driven by a clear mission, but they also require a practical understanding of organisational priorities, business realities and the broader operating environment. As healthcare challenges become increasingly complex, research is rarely a solo endeavour. Much of the conversation centred on the importance of researchers and innovators and the need to better support our workforce to ensure we have the skills and expertise needed for our country to continue to produce high-impact research, clinical and commercial outcomes. It is crucial for the Strategy’s success to ensure we bring our sector along on this journey and have a genuinely whole-of-pipeline approach in implementing it. Great to see continued momentum on an issue that matters for the future of health and medical research in Australia and Research Australia stands ready to support the Minister and the Department in implementing this crucial strategy for our sector.

Dr Monica Trujillo liked thisDr Monica Trujillo liked thisI loved being part of a conversation on women, longevity and what actually matters for living well for longer at the Women's Agenda Health and Wellbeing Summit alongside Heba Shaheed, Abby Bloom and expertly chaired by Angela Priestley. One of the themes I kept coming back to was how easy it is to get distracted by the noise (mostly from social media and influencers). Supplements - Biomarkers - Wearables - Biological age - Optimisation protocols - Biohacking - Peptides etc etc Some of these things can be useful. But for most of us, the biggest gains still come from getting the absolute basics right: 🥗 eating well 💃 moving regularly 💪 maintaining muscle and strength 😴 getting enough rest and sleep 🤝 staying socially connected 🩻 keeping up with preventative health and screening None of this is particularly glamorous (or easily monetisable) but it is also incredibly powerful if you can get it right. For me, the goal of longevity isn’t simply to add more years, it’s adding quality years. It is to build the body and the life that allow us to keep doing the things we choose, with strength, independence and joy, for as long as possible. And perhaps the real challenge now is learning to ignore some of the noise, resist turning health into another impossible optimisation project (laden with guilt), and focus on the things that compound cumulatively and quietly over decades. The basics may not be exciting, and aren’t always easy, but they work.

Dr Monica Trujillo reacted on thisDr Monica Trujillo reacted on thisI didn’t see this one coming! Last night at #AMA26 I was humbled to receive the AMA’s 2026 President’s Award. I’ve been trying to work out what to say about it, and I feel a bit speechless! Even though I still work as a ‘traditional’ doctor, a lot of my work now sits in digital health and working in the systems that shape what’s possible in a consult - long before anyone walks through the door. For a while I worried that was drifting away from what we know as medicine. I’ve come to realise it isn’t - it’s the same job, standing a bit further back from the bedside. And maybe even having a larger impact. Creative Careers in Medicine started from that same uncertainty. I wanted to find other doctors who’d wandered off the expected path and see whether they’d found it lonely too. A lot of them had. It’s now a tribe of more than 25,000 doctors, but it’s not the number that matters - it’s that people bring their half-formed ideas there before they’re ready to say them out loud anywhere else, and they feel supported and that they still belong. So this doesn’t feel like my award. It belongs to everyone who has built these two wonderful communities - CCIM and Australian Medical Angels alongside me, and to the patients and colleagues who innovate alongside me and who’ve taught me most of what I know. Thank you to Dr Danielle McMullen and the AMA. Congratulations to the other award recipients - all so deserving and makes me realise that the future looks bright! ✨ (Still a bit stunned 😳 🥇)

From innovators to carers and patient advocates, their approaches were different but their focus on the patient remained at the centre of everything. Hearing from Olympic champion, Cathy Freeman, in a fireside chat with Nick Coatsworth, was another highlight. As a patient herself with a long-term knee injury, the sporting legend revealed it was the kindness and care of those who took the time to connect with her, that made all the difference. I was also privileged to present the Outstanding Patient Carer Award, which recognises a carer who has provided exceptional support, compassion and advocacy for a patient, with an unwavering commitment and selflessness to their dignity and quality of life. The award went to Kylie Marion, a tireless advocate for her daughter, but acknowledging the amazing stories and contributions of her fellow finalists, Julie France, Lorraine Mutukisna, Muoi Muoi Fernandez and Nives Forte. 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗷𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆𝘀: 𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮 A national consultation process is currently underway to gain input from healthcare stakeholders across Australia on a proposed national approach to integrated healthcare. The consultation, which closes on 30 November 2025, invites healthcare professionals and wider stakeholders in the health and care sectors to share their views on a proposed national approach to integrated, localised care pathways. A shared national framework that supports local adaption would help address fragmentation and complexity within the Australian health system. This approach has the potential to reshape how care is delivered nationwide. Healthcare professionals and patients know where the gaps are. We need them to share their ideas about what works, what doesn't, and what would help them. By gathering the collective wisdom of health system colleagues to inform a more effective national approach, we can create significant benefits for clinicians, patients, and systems across Australia. The consultation document outlines five draft goals for the care pathways system in Australia: 1. Establish a shared national framework grounded in co-design 2. Create joint governance that aligns national and state efforts whilst protecting local authority 3. Secure sustainable funding and evaluation mechanisms 4. Embed interoperable digital infrastructure 5. Foster a culture of continuous improvement and knowledge translation. Submitting healthcare professionals and stakeholders can share as much or as little as they choose, with no compulsory questions and all answers summarised anonymously. Key themes will be synthesised and tested with contributors before sharing final outcomes with the Australian healthcare community.
