It's all good

@chocodile / chocodile.tumblr.com

Art blog of a fat scruffy crocodile lady who likes drawing original characters... though lately it's been a whole lot of character exploration of a certain large evil rabbit. My work is mostly SFW-ish with some occasional pinup type drawings.... You know how it is. I do try to tag stuff, though. I made a game called Theo's Big Adventure and am currently [REDACTED] years deep into working on a second one, a cowboy drama-slash-farming sim called Wishbone. You can also check out my Storenvy shop for enamel pins, stickers, acrylic charms, and more!

Hiya! I was the advice anon from a few days back! First of thank you so so so so much for taking the time to not just answer but give such thorough advice! I really appreciate it so much, shared it with other friends of mine who have similar anxieties as I do. I really do appreciate it so much. Even if the internet isn’t how it used to be with less algorithms and numbers, I hope that I can still find my own enjoyment. I do have a best friend who I reconnected with 4 years ago and he gave me back that spark I was losing being one of the first people genuinely in love with my work much how I love his!

And yes please! I would love to hear your thoughts on meeting other creators and how to “launch” stories , and create that community! I love hearing the insight and introspection of fellow artists ! Everyone has different experiences that can be learned from and I just love reading what artists have to say about their work or methods ! Don’t worry about length, the more the better (of course please do not stress or worry about it, take all the time you need!)

Thank you again for answering my questions earnestly, made my week!

Hey Anon, sorry this took a while to get to! I've been pretty busy. I'm glad you found the first post helpful!

Regarding audience building and finding other creators... as I mentioned, I have a lot of thoughts. Here's a bunch of slightly disjointed notes on I've put together…

AUDIENCE BUILDING TIPS FROM SOMEONE WHO KINDA DID IT:

ALSO, here are some tips specifically on places to meet other OC creators/artists:

  • ART FIGHT! This is a big one and is a GREAT place to do the "we both have OCs with red hair and glasses... maybe we could be friends!" thing. Every year I do art fight, I wind up following several new people primarily on the basis of overlapping OC interest.
  • Collaborative art spaces! Zines, Artist's Alley/Dealer's Den, Art Telephone games, hobby spaces dedicated to specific crafts... bonus points if there's a Discord group for it! Artists love to talk shop with each other. Not everyone is obsessively passionate about OCs specifically, but I'd hazard that most artists have a story of some kind in the back of their head that they can be coaxed into talking about.
  • Games & other fandoms with a large OC component! Most games with customizable player characters have fairly OC-supportive fandoms. Baldur's Gate 3, Fallout, most MMOs, tabletop RPGs... roleplay is fun if you can find it, but just sharing stuff about your character tends to be well-received, too. These fandoms tend to have mechanisms to connect with each other (ask memes, writing prompts, etc) and tend to be very open to "Oh, you character works with Faction A? My character in Faction B would have a thing or two to say about that!" style interactions.
  • Roleplay in general! ...Do be cautious though. It's sad to say, but internet RP has a reputation for drama for a reason. While you might just be there to play dolls with your friends, you can't count on other people to be equally chill. I think every RP community I've ever been aware of (not even part of, just aware of) eventually imploded in some sort of massive messy meltdown fight. It's great if you can have a little circle with trusted friends, but in big wide-open unmoderated communities any one can join, you're basically guaranteed to have some bad apples. You have to kinda harden your heart and get really good at detecting red flags and still be prepared that it will probably all end in tears someday. There's a reason I don't do it anymore, but man, it can be really fun while it lasts if you get a good group going, and you can make some great lasting friendships.

Your color choices are always fantastic. Every single color either feels very harmonious or beautifully contrasting, which can be so difficult with so many vibrant colors. How do you do it?

Aw, thank you so much!

Advice is under the cut (gets a little long with images):

Is Hyden a glutton for power/punishment? Or is he a more traditional glutton for food? Or all of the above?

Hyden styles himself as free-thinking intellectual and uses a lot of fancy words to frame his hedonism as a lifestyle choice. Truthfully, though, he's always had a very intense and addictive personality. It's less a choice and more of a compulsion.

He's extremely sensation seeking and *incredibly* easily bored, which means that by this point in his life he's already exhausted life's pleasures to such a degree that his masochistic inclinations have started ratcheting up instead. On top of that, his judgement and impulse control aren't what it used to be. For some reason.

His tendency to think outside the box and tirelessly pursue his current fixation until the point of exhaustion does apply to the pursuit of knowledge and power, too. Once upon a time, when he was younger and sharper, it made him an excellent innovator and helped him earn the label of "prodigy". But it's been a long time since he did anything impressive that talent, unless you count unleashing the Shadow.

(Side note: Despite his hyperbole, when deprived of physical pleasure in Fallout AU, he fails to throw himself off a bridge as promised. He loves himself far too much to ever die.)

"You will fix it, yes?" Three figures, clad in heavy-duty tundra gear, stood over the stricken vehicle. The Prowler lay miserably in the snowdrift, steam billowing from its vents, a dark viscous liquid trickling ominously from the junction between two pipes. The largest figure, a Rabbit, shifted uncomfortably. "You understand these devices, these... mechanical carriages. Snowmobiles. I’ve seen Belov working on them. He knows of them, their inner workings--" "I told you: We'll see." one of the smaller figures snapped. Alex cocked her batty ears toward the Rabbit, scowling. "It isn’t as simple as you seem to think. It's not 'magic'. At best: we'll need something to patch it with. At worst: a replacement part."

"Well! If it CAN'T be fixed, I will NOT die out here!" The shortest figure spoke, his voice rising. Shrill, tense. Theo flattened his ears and crossed his arms, tucking them close to conserve heat. "Assisting Hyden or not, I should have never agreed to come on this godforsaken quest of yours. I left my manor for this!? The sun grows low and-- look! More snowflakes! If we cannot get moving again, I- I will- I will take the remaining snowmobile and return to Northcrest--" "And leave us to die out on the tundra?" Alex snapped. "I think not. Calm down, both of you. Nobody is going to--" But the conversation was interrupted when a fourth figure appeared at the crest of a nearby hill, waving a long clawed arm. "Town over here! Ruins! Let’s shelter for the night, yeah?"

TL;DR: Hyden, Theo, and the Rising Dawn depart Theo's manor and head out to the snowy wastes. One of the snowmobiles break down and they must spend the night in the ruins of a town now lost to the encroaching ice. Hyden is miserable, feeling this world is not his and not something he can survive in, but pins hope on meeting Ambroys again.

hi!! i recently ordered the millenium fox girl shirt(SO excited about it!) and i wanted to ask when we can expect things to start shipping? im totes cool with waiting, but i like having a basic idea on when i can expect stuff.

They're in production now! Spent around 4 hours pressing them yesterday (much to the neighbor children's fascination) and another 2 hours packing a bunch of them. I plan to press more throughout the weekend.

Most orders (including all the fox girls) should ship out on Monday the 31st. You might even already have an email with a tracking number from Storenvy. :)

Some of the possum and burger dog shirts will be delayed a bit longer (around a week?) because I didn't order enough larger sizes, but I'll get them made up and shipped as soon as the blank shirts arrive.

Wisconsin! Please don't sleep on this election. Your future chance at free and fair elections as well as so many of your rights are on the line!

The polls are incredibly tight and a Schimel win means Democrats lose their majority and Trump-Musk style court decisions will do terrible damage.

Bodily Autonomy is also on the ballot in this race:

Also just going to add in here, this is Musk's backing of this shmuck likely as much if not more to do with fact that Tesla is currently suing the state of Wisconsin than any conservative agenda.

Have you ever thought to yourself "Man, I really like Chocodile's artwork. The only thing wrong with it is that I'm not wearing it as a t-shirt right now." If so: Wow, that's unbelievably specific! Also, you're in luck!

I have three new t-shirt designs hot off the heat press! I'm taking production in house with these: Each one is pressed by hand, by me, in a scary hundred year old garage.

See the first reblog for the link to order!

I've got the Amaranthine and Team Dark prints available for preorder, too, and have restocked some old favorites (like the Poke Faves enamel pins and the neon tiger and cinnamon roll snail plushies!)

These will also be available at the Furlandia and Anthro Weekend Utah Dealer's Dens in 2025. Maybe more?

In reference to my comment about your latest work perfectly evoking that 80's fantasy painting feel and it would fit right in on a magic card... I decided to have a little fun with the MTG website's "cardsmith" function. =3 I think it's fitting that an utter bastard(tm) like Hyden would have to be represented by an utter bastard of a card. (For those that do not play Magic: The Gathering, "Counterspell" is one of cards that's so good, it's remained remained unchanged/the bar for what it does for 30 years. Basically, you pay mana at instant speed (whenever you want, including other people's turns), and you can prevent someone from playing a card, as they are playing the card. And unlike the Counterspell card itself - that is 'spent' once you play it like a rocket - Hyden is a creature on the field that has that as an ability, and thus, can be used as much as you like provided you have the mana to spend.) So, Hyden just having The Counterspell on demand with no perquisites or drawbacks would be hilariously broken and unfun to play against - a card that equals his real abilities as a Wizard... before his 'injury' anyways. Oh, and he can take your favorite person/creature, and dissolve them into black goop that'll try to kill you. That is also very Hydencore.

I think Hyden would be proud to be on a card that's so good, it's either A) Banned from play/locked to an obscure format, or B) will make you public enemy #1 with every other player at the table.

Hahaha this is very fun! Thank you for whipping this up, and for the explanation on his abilities, too! I briefly dabbled in Magic as a teenager and don't remember all that much about the meta, but know enough to see how broken this guy is. I like that you made him a 1/1 too--as he should be, sitting on the back row being protected by burlier creatures while he slings his annoying cheap shot spells.

Another print! Peeps asked us for Amaranthine merch last year, and how can I say no to that? I wanted to do something that evoked 80s fantasy oil paintings, the type of thing you'd see on video game box art or in TTRPGs.

Theo talks about his "studies," the purpose of which he is vague about, because it's a bit of a faux pas to drop "so these days I've been conducting horrific necro-arcane experiments on corpses to learn how to resurrect my dead mommy -- what have you been up to lately?" into polite conversation.

The script for this started as an answer to this ask:

Theo! What would you say is, so far, your best achievement with magic? Would you say those magical studies are your favorite “hobby”?

But Theo is Theo and it turned into a monologue. And that turned into a comic. ...Normal life really was all over for him when he could no longer enjoy playing with his trains.
