Earlier this week, CD Projekt Red finally confirmed that it was developing a new The Witcher 3 expansion — Songs of the Past — and already, one dedicated fan has recreated the unique third sword seen in the key art.
"Who could have guessed that I'd be getting a new expansion pack after a full 11 years?" the description reads. "In honor of this announcement, I decided to make a sword inspired by the one Geralt is holding in the promotional poster for the Songs of the Past expansion pack."
No, The Sword Isn't Already In-Game
Fans have spent the last few days sleuthing into the provenance of the sword, with some speculating that it belongs to Ciri, while others believe it to be the Gesheft blade that can already be found in the Land of a Thousand Fables, but as mod author merigoldmaribor explained, "Only the buckle part resembles it."
"It's similar to Gesheft," commenter Kakatrix explained. "But they have different crossguard arches. Gesheft's pommel is shaped like an apple, while Songs of the Past is shaped like a flower bud."
The mod replaces the Wolf School steel sword and alters the scabbard texture to match the one seen in the promotional art, but there's a Ciri version too if you'd prefer. Mod author merigoldmaribor is also working on an alternative option to replace the silver sword, instead of the steel.
merigoldmaribor also modded The Witcher 4's new Lynx medallion into the game and restored a cut Ciri ending.
As of now, this is the only Songs of the Past mod available for The Witcher 3 on the Nexus website, but there's not much more that can be gleaned from the key art, with the sword being the only true highlight. Nonetheless, with Songs of the Past not due until 2027, merigoldmaribor's rapid-paced work at least allows us to recreate the slick new key art a little earlier than CDPR planned.
In the meantime, while we wait for the expansion to drop, fans have restored a cut Hearts of Stone ending, cobbled together using recovered dialogue recordings — not AI, thankfully.
The axed plotline offers a better explanation for Shani's return, but it also places her in the crosshair of Gaunter O'Dimm, with a brand-new branching path: if you refuse to help the Man of Glass, he will kill Shani. If you take his offer, he won't. It's a fresh perspective on what is now a decade-old DLC, offering the perfect excuse to dive back into The Witcher 3 and get a new playthrough ready for Songs of the Past next year. And now, you can even do it with Geralt's new sword.
