Xbox Is Releasing An OLED ROG Ally, And I'm Already Scared Of How Much It'll Cost

Asus has revealed a third model of the ROG Xbox Ally. It's called the ROG Xbox Ally X20 and it comes with an OLED screen, improved controls, all of which is packaged up in a rather fetching black and gold translucent case. The only downside is the price because, much like when the original models of the Xbox Ally were announced, no one wants to tell us how much the X20 is going to cost.

An OLED Screen, Drift-Resistant Sticks, And An All-New Action Button

Revealed on Monday, the biggest change to the Ally X20 compared to the $1,000 Ally X is the screen. Not only is it an OLED screen, but it's slightly bigger than the one on the base models - 7.4 inches as opposed to just seven. That might not sound like much, but on a handheld this size, and with that bigger screen being an OLED one, it will make a big difference.

The other big improvement over the Ally X is the library button, because there isn't one. If you've used an Xbox Ally for more than three minutes, then you've probably hit that button by accident and wondered how you get back to the game you were playing moments ago. Not a problem on the X20, as that button is now an action button that takes screenshots when pressed and recordings when held, similar to the dedicated screenshot button on most console controllers.

Other features exclusive to the X20 include drift-resistant thumbsticks, a d-pad that can be toggled between four buttons and eight buttons, and, I've saved the best for last, its Xbox button glows green. You just said "Oooooo" out loud, didn't you? I heard you. It's okay, I did too.

Okay, Enough Small Talk - How Much Is This Thing Going To Cost?

Here's where the bad news starts to creep in. The X20 also comes with a pair of Xreal R1 glasses. Those glasses cost $849 when bought separately, and no, before you ask, you can't buy the X20 without them. The console and the glasses come as a bundle, and Asus and Xbox are, understandably, being somewhat coy when it comes to telling us how much that bundle will cost.

Let's do a little math before we all head off into our respective corners to cry about how much this thing is going to cost. The Xbox Ally X is $999.99. Honestly, somewhat surprising it has held firm on that price considering the state of the industry. Let's say the addition of an OLED screen and all of the other improvements that come with the X20 add $250 to that price.

And let's be honest, I'm almost definitely being incredibly conservative.

That brings the price up to an already pretty eye-watering $1250. Now throw in those fancy glasses, and you're staring down the barrel of well over $2,000 for this new version of the Xbox Ally. I'd say that I can't fathom who in their right mind would be buying these, but I said the same thing about the $1,000 Ally X, and those sold out in a matter of minutes. As did the 1TB OLED Steam Deck last week once they had been restocked, even though Valve tacked $300 onto the price once they were back in stock.
