Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the greatest open-world titles of all time. Never has there been an open-world title that felt so lush, vibrant, realistic, and downright fun to traverse, whether on foot or horseback. However, the beauty of this world truly shines the brightest when you decide to grab a horse and roam around the countryside.
You'll want to optimize your journeys on horseback and make traversing through the world as painless as possible. Saddles become exceedingly important in this regard, offering a wealth of benefits that aid the horse — and, as a result, you — when it comes to improving their stats. If you want to grab the best saddles possible for your steed, keep an eye out for the following options in Red Dead Redemption 2.
Updated May 1, 2026, by Ben Jessey: Our list of the best Red Dead Redemption 2 saddles was missing a few high-quality ones. So, we've updated the collection to add a few more.

For its cost, the Kneller Mother Hubbard Saddle isn't bad. It's the cheapest one you'll find, after all. The money you save on it can be used on other things early on in the game.
Best Ways To Waste Time In Red Dead Redemption 2
Sure, there's plenty of missions, quests, and more for you to do in Red Dead Redemption 2, but why not waste some time too?
Later on, you won't have to worry about money too much. Of course, you'll also have other saddles to choose from, rendering the Kneller Mother Hubbard Saddle pretty useless at that point. However, as an early game saddle, it's a decent choice.

Stock saddles in Red Dead Redemption 2 are generally less impressive than the improved versions. So, you shouldn't expect too much from any stock saddle. That said, the Gerden Vaquero is a pretty solid choice.
For starters, the price isn't too bad at only $51. When you're paying that sort of price, you probably don't expect the stamina regen to be as high as 8 percent. Yet, that is exactly what the Gerden Vaquero provides.

Losing a horse is always a horrible prospect in Red Dead Redemption 2. This is especially true for those of you who have developed a bond with your steed, only to find yourself stuck between a rock and a hard place when you take an errant turn without any Horse Revivers on you.
This is why saddles that reduce Core HP Drain are so important to preserve the longevity of your horse. The Stenger Roping saddle is especially useful in this regard, boasting the highest bonus in this category among stock wares.

The Nuevo Paraiso saddle is rare because it's available only to those with the Special or Ultimate editions of the game. Despite being rare, it can't compete with the best saddles the game has to offer. That said, it's still a really solid early game choice.
For starters, it's free if you have the Special or Ultimate edition. You just need to equip it at the stable. Plus, its attributes are very well-rounded compared to other saddles you can pick up at that point.

As an improved-type saddle, the Lumley McClelland is better than your average stock saddle. In fact, it's actually a pretty solid saddle in general with some nice balanced attributes across the board.
So, it's certainly worthy of your favorite steed. Yet, it doesn't quite match the best saddles that the game has to offer. It's good for its price, though.

The Kneller Dakota saddle is solid. Its stat improvements, while still marginal, are perfectly adequate for those who don't particularly care to scout out the best equipment that Red Dead Redemption 2 has to offer.
$70 may sound steep, but it won't feel too tough on your wallet by the time you can reasonably be expected to have access to this saddle.

The Lumley Ranch Cutter saddle is another serviceable saddle that you can take instead of the Kneller Dakota Saddle, particularly if you want a greater reduction in Core HP Drain. It's certainly one of the better saddles in Red Dead Redemption 2, although it isn't exactly remarkable, either.
We'd go as far as to call the Lumley Ranch Cutter (Improved) well-balanced, which is more than can be said for some other saddles in the game.

The Gerden Trail saddle is fantastic. The fact that the base version already provides a ten percent decrease in a horse's stamina drain should make it clear as to why this one's so coveted by so many fans.
The improved Gerden Trail saddle provides the highest reduction in core stamina drain out of all the base saddles in the game. Those of you who purchase this saddle will find your journey throughout the world of Red Dead Redemption 2 to be fairly smooth, with barely any moments of slowdown.

The Gerden Trail saddle and Gerden Vaquero saddle are fairly interchangeable. The former is better at reducing overall stamina drain. However, the latter's performance in that area is just slightly less, and it also features a lower HP drain as well.
If you want the best saddle that doesn't need any hunting involved and has balanced stat bonuses to boot, you should go for the Gerden Vaquero saddle. The fact that it looks slightly better than the other Gerden Saddle variant is also a notable bonus.

1x Perfect Boar Pelt |
When you begin to look at the saddles that you get from Trappers, you will start to see some far more impressive attributes. However, they typically take more effort to get. For example, you need to get a perfect boar pelt to get this saddle. This means getting a clean kill on a perfect boar.
The saddle is worth the effort, though, as it's very good in each area. The lack of HP drain, in particular, is excellent.
