Dataminers have discovered an unused texture in Red Dead Redemption 2 that suggests Rockstar was planning on hiding a reference to Grand Theft Auto 6.

As anyone who has been following the mystery of the spider-web and telegraph poles knows, Red Dead Redemption 2 still has plenty of secrets up its sleeve. Rockstar's wild west magnum opus has been feeding us with constant discoveries and easter eggs in the nearly eight years since it first launched, and it looks like that's not slowing down.

While the spider web mystery is one that's still remaining in the game and was meant to be discovered, dataminers have recently uncovered another interesting detail that's gone unnoticed all this time. And, surprise, surprise, it appears to be a reference to GTA 6 that was eventually cut from the game for some reason.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Almost Referenced GTA 6 Four Years Before It Was Confirmed

That Or Rockstar Just Held Onto The Name Leonida

Over on Twitter, GameRoll_ shared an interesting discovery that was made by SonekaSpeedruns, who found a partially unused boat texture in Red Dead Redemption 2. The texture shows a list of names that would have been put on ships, including one that will instantly catch the eye of anyone waiting on GTA 6 - The Leonida.

I Forgot How Unsettling Red Dead Redemption Is

To this day, Red Dead Redemption's final chapter unnerves me more than most horror games.

For those who don't know, Leonida is the name of GTA's equivalent of Florida, which we're rumoured to be able to see alongside Vice City in GTA 6. There's a chance the easter egg is unrelated, but it seems more likely that Rockstar wanted to put a little tease for its next big project.

GTA 6's development reportedly started in 2018, so it's not far-fetched to imagine that Rockstar had already thought about the state's name by then.

It's not like this is the first time that Rockstar has done this, either. Grand Theft Auto 4 had a little hint at the next game in the series with a "Visit Los Santos" billboard at the airport, as well as a plane ticket to San Andreas that was posted on the Rockstar Social Club. Either way, the potential reference ended up being cut, and has only just been pointed out by fans.
