Yesterday, Sony announced that it was developing an R-rated animated Bloodborne movie alongside How to Blow Up a Pipeline studio Lyrical Media and YouTuber Seán 'Jacksepticeye' McLoughlin.

Lyrical Media is also working alongside Kojima Productions on an animated Death Stranding movie.

In a new interview with IGN, McLoughlin acknowledged that a lot of people will be "surprised" to find that he's attached to the project, but promised that he would fight "tooth and nail" to ensure the film is as good as it possibly can be, and that he "lives and breathes FromSoftware games."

"I assure you. I promise you. I'm not going into this and taking it lightly," McLoughlin said. "I know what an absolute gigantic honor it is. No one knows that better than I do."

Jacksepticeye Is A Big Bloodborne Fan, But Is That Enough?

McLoughlin stressed throughout the interview that he's a huge Bloodborne fan, noting his Hunter's Mark tattoo, Hunter and Eileen the Crow statues, and 600–700 cumulative hours in the game. "I absolutely adore this franchise," he explained. "Bloodborne is like the thing that I wake up and play video games for. It is the top of the top."

Regardless, not everyone is convinced that YouTube and Hollywood intermingling is the best idea, especially given Jacksepticeye's lack of experience with the film industry. Being a fan is certainly reassuring — Alex Garland likewise stressed his adoration for FromSoftware when the Elden Ring movie was announced — but that alone isn't enough of a qualification to helm an adaptation of this scope, and fixating on what fans want can just as easily be a detriment. However, as McLoughlin explained, he isn't the director or writer.

Sekiro is also getting an adaptation in the form of an anime.

"Again, I'm a producer," he said. "I'm not the writer or director of this. That stuff will come out later about who's involved. But as the producer of it, whatever is within my power to be able to do, I will do it."

Little else is known about the Bloodborne film right now, such as whether it will adapt the game directly or tell another story in-universe, but Sony assured that it will be "very true" to the source material's visceral tone. To offer my own insight, it's a little concerning that Jacksepticeye is the face of this announcement, and not FromSoftware or Hidetaka Miyazaki.
