Earlier this year, Take-Two Interactive delayed Grand Theft Auto 6 to May 26, 2026, and while a recent earnings report reaffirmed that the game is still on track to hit that new date, not everyone is convinced.
Insider Gaming editor-in-chief Tom Henderson claimed on his podcast that there are "rumblings" of a delay, and that he doesn't believe "it's going to release in May." While Henderson stressed that his info is "not good enough" for a report, there are murmurs from other insiders and journalists backing up his claim.
To be honest, I don't think that it is going to release in May. I just, for some reason, cannot see GTA 6 releasing in May. All the rumblings and so on just doesn't seem to suggest it.
Prominent PlayStation leaker Millie A claimed earlier this year in July that "internal talks suggest a possible slip to [September]", while Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier wrote that "There's no guarantee that May 2026 is a sure thing".
GTA forums user GameRoll, who revealed Jason and Lucia's last names ahead of the second trailer, went as far as to say that "Chapter 5 is in development hell", explaining why a delay might happen.
Tom Henderson Speculates That GTA 6 Could Be Delayed To October
While Millie A claimed that Rockstar is leaning towards a September release date, Henderson speculated that it may be pushed back to October, allowing the studio to capitalise on holiday sales, while also positioning it closer to next-gen and the eventual PC port.
"There are so many double dippings that they can do, that I think it makes sense," Henderson explained. "I think the whole industry is waiting to see if it's going to be delayed because they're probably going to announce it in their next financial call, which is in late November."
However, Insider Gaming senior editor Mike Straw believes that Take-Two will reaffirm the May release date in November and announce the delay in the February financial call, much closer to the planned release date.
Either way, we'll find out soon enough, but one thing is clear amid all these rumours and reports surrounding GTA 6's release date—it's not nearly as ironclad as Take-Two wants us to believe.
