A little under two years ago, Final Fantasy 14 launched Dawntrail, its fifth major expansion. At this point, I reckon it's safe to say that Dawntrail's reception has been decidedly mixed. Whereas the preceding two expansions, Shadowbringers and Endwalker, were nigh-universally hailed as excellent entries in a sprawling saga, Square Enix's attempt to essentially kick things off with a brand-new arc following Endwalker's big finale went well for some, poorly for others, and for many, it's ultimately felt like a pretty but somewhat shallow stepping stone toward whatever's next.

And now, we know the shape of things to come. Announced during the game's 2026 North American Fan Festival, Final Fantasy 14: Evercold will bring players to a brand new realm filled with mythical stories and... well... lots of ice. January 2027—book it, that's when we're all getting chilly.

The Godless Realms Saga

Yoshi-P has explained that Dawntrail launched what is now internally being called "The Godless Realms Saga," AKA what comes after Endwalker tied off the original game's main storyline. "With the launch of Evercold," he explains, "we'll be furthering this exciting storyline."

We'll be visiting the reflection known as the Fourth, which is huge news, but I do know there are plenty of players who were kind of hoping we'd check out more of the Source instead. So it goes. The Fourth is "slowly succumbing to the ever-spreading ice," which sounds more than a bit like Shadowbringers' light pitch. That's about as much as Yoshida is willing to delve into just yet, story-wise.

Next Tuesday, however, when Patch 7.5 releases, the story will set things up for Evercold. In other words, there's a good reason why Yoshi-P is remaining tight-lipped on the narrative front just now—we don't need to wait long at all for more.

Concept art was unveiled, as well as early in-development screenshots. Yoshida is emphasizing "dark, gothic" vibes for Evercold, and poked fun at just how much we're seeing right now that isn't encased in ice. My not-so-bold guess is that we may see these lively, at times quite heated, areas get overcome by the cold as the story moves forward.

"Arcane giants" will be found throughout the Fourth, and Yoshida isn't telling us yet whether they're friends or foes. Perhaps there'll be some of column A; some of column B. Either way, I'm getting Xenoblade Chronicles 2 vibes:

There's also cat people... and I can tell you, the Fan Fest crowd just went wild for this one:

We've been promised much more to come about Evercold during the next Fan Festival, but until then, we'll be relying upon Patch 7.5 to fill us in on what to expect.
