Update 19:16 BST: Tom Henderson has deleted the original tweet about AI experiments in Far Cry 7, but left up the one saying that this is being done for "research and development" processes. This could back up the idea that Far Cry 7 will be free of generative AI and is only being used to test Ubisoft's AI tools. Original story follows.
Ubisoft is continuing to invest heavily in AI. This comes from its latest financial report, where it says that it is "accelerating investments" into gen AI both behind the scenes and in ways players can interact with in-game.
Aside from Ubisoft's experimental AI game, Teammates, no specific titles were mentioned here. However, according to Tom Henderson of Insider Gaming, gen AI is being experimented with in Far Cry 7 - and in his words, it "looks like s**t".
AI Slop Is Reportedly Being Tested In Far Cry 7, As Ubisoft Keeps Investing In Teammates
Henderson doesn't mince his words when he shares his thoughts on what he's seen: "They've been testing this in Far Cry 7 for R&D [research and development], and it looks like s**t."
In another reply, he emphasises that this means Ubisoft's AI experiments are not limited to Teammates, which we already knew about. "They have just been testing prompts and whatever in Far Cry 7 for research and development," he explains.
Many will be hoping that these are just tests and that none of this ends up in the final game. With that said, it sounds like development has been all over the place. Hopefully, that doesn't mean gen AI will be shoved in there to try and speed things along, or to just see what audiences will accept.
While audiences have largely rejected generative AI in games, there are exceptions. Many were willing to excuse Arc Raiders' use of AI voice acting. At the very least, the devs themselves have walked back on this.
Ubisoft has done little to endear itself to the gaming community as of late. Multiple projects have been cancelled, including the long-awaited Prince of Persia remake that seemed pretty much ready to go. With that in mind, there's a lot resting on Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Resynced, which is set to launch on July 9.
