Minthara, the enigmatic drow paladin, offers a unique opportunity for players in Baldur’s Gate 3 to explore her complex abilities and dark charisma. As a character who can be both ally and adversary, Minthara’s potential shines when customized with the right build, as any potential paladin would.
Her natural affinity for combat, oath-based abilities, and roleplaying flexibility make her an excellent choice for various playstyles. In this guide, we’ll cover the best builds for Minthara, focusing on her subclass choices, feats, and optimal strategies to make the most of her strengths in and out of combat.
Updated November 18, 2025 by Ryan Thompson-Bamsey: We've updated this build to align it with a more popular and powerful option for Minthara: the mighty Sorcadin. We've also updated the recruitment section!
Minthara Overview
Minthara is a drow paladin and one of the first antagonists you’ll meet in Baldur’s Gate 3, at least if you’re doing a regular good-aligned playthrough. She leads the goblins against the Druid Grove, all at the behest of Ketheric Thorm, one of the three chosen of the Absolute.

As a paladin, her default subclass is the oath of vengeance. While you can change her class as you see fit, we will focus on her most lore-friendly version, focusing on her devotion to her oath and conviction to her cause, as well as seeing paladins as entities without a deity.
Regardless of her class, Minthara has the skill Soul Branding, a bonus action that adds fire damage to her or an ally’s next attack. She also comes with the Brand of the Absolute, allowing her to reap the benefit of certain items obtained mostly during Act 1.
How To Recruit Minthara
There are two ways to recruit Minthara which will depend on your playstyle. Minthara is initially recruited either by siding with the goblins or by performing a specific action in the Goblin Camp that allows her to survive without requiring you to raid the Emerald Grove.
Siding With The Goblins
- Agree to the raid: In the Goblin Camp, agree to help Minthara raid the Druid Grove.
- Raid the grove: Kill the Tieflings and Druids. Beware, this will cause companions like Wyll and Karlach to leave permanently.
- Act 2 Rescue: You will find her at Moonrise Towers in Act 2, where she is being interrogated. Rescue her from the prison area, and she will join your camp.
Siding Against The Goblins
- Do not talk to Minthara at the camp.
- Activate non-lethal attacks when you end up fighting her and knock her out. This passive only works with melee attacks, so make sure the 'killing blow' is a melee attack!
- Proceed as normal through the rest of the Goblin Camp. Kill the other two Goblin leaders (Ragzlin and Gut) to secure the Druid Grove and save the Tieflings.
- Act 2 Rescue: Later, when you reach Moonrise Towers in Act 2, she will appear at her interrogation. Rescue her from the prison area, and she will join your camp.
Oath Of Vengeance Paladin Build
Paladins are a class that can deal a lot of damage with basic attacks, spells, and smites, but they also have a hard time recovering resources unless they take a long rest. This is where Minthara’s Soul Branding comes in handy, letting her still keep up the pressure even when all her spell slots are consumed.
The build that we're recommending, however, crucially includes a multiclass into the infamous 'Sorcadin' template. This build aims for the crucial Aura of Protection and unlocks third-level Sorcerer spells and Metamagic for massive damage bursts.
Crucially, we recommend re-speccing at Withers to make her more suitable to this build. We'll want to go with 17 Strength, 10 Dexterity, 14 Constitution, 8 Intelligence, 10 Wisdom, and 17 Charisma.

The Sorcadin playstyle revolves around transforming Sorcerer's abundant spell slots into devastating melee burst damage via Divine Smite. In a standard turn, Minthara uses her Action for two melee attacks (via Extra Attack), choosing to Smite only on successful hits.
The power of the build comes from Metamagic, specifically Quickened Spell, which allows her to cast a powerful Sorcerer spell - like
Haste (on herself, naturally) or the paralysing
Hold Person - as a Bonus Action. This leaves her main Action free to deliver a full round of two Smite attacks.
You might not want to use the tadpoles you find during your adventures, but Minthara already comes with a few Illithid powers unlocked from the get-go: Charm, Concentrated Blast, Favourable Beginnings and Psionic Backlash. Concentrated Blast, in particular, is a great way to stop concentrating on support spells like Bless for added damage.
Best Equipment For This Build
Minthara, as a paladin, benefits greatly from heavy armor and shields that allow her to remain in the front lines. As someone with the Brand of the Absolute, she can also use the branded items, although not all of them are useful to her if she stays on her Oath of Vengeance path.
While these items would work for many character classes, paladins like Minthara can make the most out of them. The Adamantine Splint Armour and the Blood of Lathander are from Act 1 but work really well through Act 2!
For the endgame, we recommend the following pieces:
