Back in November, Rockstar's Dan Houser, the multibillion-dollar studio's co-founder, opened up about what precisely happened with Agent. Pitched as an open-world spy game, the title—which aimed for a PS3 release—remained on the company's website all the way until 2021, when at last, writing long since on the wall, it was scrubbed entirely from the database.

The news came two years after a source code leak for Grand Theft Auto 5 eventually led to unexpected insights on a few work-in-progress asset pics for what would have been Agent. Fast-forward to April 2026, and one hard-working sleuth of a fan believes they've pieced together the puzzle as to what Agent's protagonist might well have looked like. It's not much, but it's something.

"Player"

As spotted by r/GamingLeaksAndRumors, the diligent GTAForums user XanaBax may well have solved a puzzle precious few fans ever expected to have answered for them: the (rough, work-in-progress) identity of Agent's could-have-been protagonist. There's no name attached, but it's marked "Player," which indicates a high probability that this would have been the fellow we'd all have controlled across the canceled game's sprawling setting.

The possible Agent protagonist.

Behold.

While Dan Houser mentioned that Agent's 1970s Cold War setting was just one of several proposed concepts—including a modern-day alternative approach—the guy we see in the above image is dressed in some rather 70s-esque fatigues. So, there's that. (As someone who prefers the period piece approach over contemporary concepts, I would have been more interested in Agent in this case, anyway. But that's neither here nor there.)

Here's how XanaBax explains the technical side of their determination. I'll let them do the talking, because it's frankly beyond me:

a) the main node in the hierarchy is called "player"

b) the same model (with different textures) can be seen on some images from a former environment artist's portfolio from 2011.

c) some parts of the model are taken from/edited versions of Niko Bellic. The head has more or less the same UV map (excluding the hairline), the boots are default Niko boots and the pants are edited Niko's cargo pants (UVs are slightly different too)

d) the model is within "Jimmy" (the codename of Agent) folder and hasn't appeared in any GTA game

The 2011 part is pretty interesting, and "Jimmy" is a keen observation, but really, it's that first part that screams loudest to me. "Player" is pretty straightforward. Unless this guy's name would've been Player, which is... hm, I guess it's theoretically possible... this rather detailed (by in-development standards) model would almost certainly be the one we, as players, would control. Modeling him, at the early dev stage, on Grand Theft Auto 4 protagonist Niko Bellic is just icing on the probability cake.

It all adds up to yet another fascinating peek into something that Rockstar will simply never make, which is a real shame, because it could have been something cool. With the studio firmly focused on Grand Theft Auto 6, as well—perhaps—as Red Dead Redemption 3, I'm doubtful that we'll see a fresh IP from them at any point in the near, medium, or even distant future.
