Matt Berry has officially been cast in A Minecraft Movie Squared, and I'm sure you're probably thinking, 'Wait, didn't he play the villager that Jennifer Coolidge hooked up with in the first one?' He did, but this time, he's playing a new character, and fans are convinced that it's Herobrine.
The news broke at Minecraft Live yesterday, where it was also confirmed that Kirsten Dunst is playing Alex.
After being introduced by Jack Black as "one of the newest additions to our Minecraft family," Matt Berry teased that he's "not allowed to tell you exactly who I'm playing," while someone hands him a vest that looks near identical to Steve's.
If you've been living under bedrock for the last 16 years, Herobrine was a hugely popular internet hoax about a strange entity who looked exactly like Steve, albeit with white eyes, that stalked players. The original myth that circulated on forums was that he could be summoned by listening to the '13' music disc, but later mods popularized the idea that you could construct altars out of netherrack and golden blocks to commune with him.
Mojang played into the legend, adding a little addendum to each patch note that Herobrine had been removed, as though he kept sneaking back into the game with each update. A Minecraft Movie even paid homage during the enderman hallucination in which all of Henry's friends had glowing purple eyes, except for Steve, whose eyes glowed white, which some fans are now convinced was foreshadowing his arrival.
Herobrine, Herobrine-Inspired, Or... Steve?
It would be a deep-cut to spin a villain out of what is essentially a creepypasta, but it's worth noting that Matt Berry almost played Steve in the first film, and only dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. Hence, his limited role as Nitwit. Casting him as Herobrine would have a meta layer to it that fits perfectly with the character.
For a brief moment, we also see Matt Berry wearing the blue vest, but he completes the ensemble with a grey blazer and brown ascot. Herobrine is typically an exact replica of Steve, with the only difference being the white eyes, so it's possible that he won't be playing Herobrine, but rather a Herobrine-inspired character.
Or, maybe he is Steve. Another popular theory making the rounds right now is that Jack Black has been Herobrine all along, and the enderman hallucination was actually hinting at him being an impostor. It's a novel idea, but considering the cash cow that the first movie proved to be, it's hard to imagine Warner Bros. taking a risk as big as revealing the protagonist of the original to be a villain, especially in a by-the-numbers kid's film.
