News for the MENA AI ecosystem! 🚀 We are excited to share that MBZUAI (Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence) got a $1 million support from Google.org. With this funding from Google.org, MBZUAI’s Vice Provost Thamar Solorio will lead an effort to help speakers of underrepresented languages across the Middle East and North Africa, ensuring the local community is able to benefit from AI. Why does this matter? Most AI today is trained on English-centric data. This initiative focuses on creating a local research system that understands the diverse dialects and rich cultural contexts of our region. This collaboration will: ✅ Help researchers develop “resource-lean” sophisticated AI tools. ✅ Support early-career researchers and postdoctoral talent. ✅ Enhance real-world applications in education, cultural preservation and digital communication. As Yossi Matias, Google VP and the Head of Google Research noted, this work aims to solve practical problems through science and shows progress on the MENA AI Opportunity Initiative. 🧬 Advancing the Future of AI with Google DeepMind 🧬 #DeepMind joined Google in 2014. Since then, it has transformed from an AI lab into Google's engine of innovation. DeepMind's mission is to build AI responsibly to benefit humanity. It is responsible for many of the world's most significant AI breakthroughs, including Nobel-winning #AlphaFold — an AI system that predicts protein structures and is already being utilized by more than 3,000 UAE-based researchers. Last week, Lila Ibrahim, Chief AI Readiness Officer, was in the UAE for the World Governments Summit — a great convening where leaders in business, government, and academia, alongside Nobel Laureates and the public sector, gathered to explore the ethics of AI, scientific breakthroughs, and the readiness of society for this transformation. In her new role, Lila focuses on bringing together all these stakeholders to ensure rapid innovation and deployment are paired with responsibility. We are grateful to His Excellency Omar Sultan AlOlama a for his participation in these dialogues. AI research is the bedrock of any AI innovation. Our team hosted 100+ Tech and Telco leaders for a series of leadership skilling sessions in Riyadh. Through The Google School for Leaders, we moved beyond theory to focus on mastering the frameworks required to navigate disruption.
