Vic Bekarian shared thisIncredibly grateful for not one, but two amazing opportunities to continue doing the work that I love to do. First, I'm thrilled to be joining the teams at Riot Games ushering in the future of unforgettable gameplay experiences. I'm honored to be working with our talented team and a bright vision for what's to come. Second, our shared and cumulative experience have afforded Hongxiaoxuan Meng and I the opportunity to teach at the same institution that propelled us into our respective careers. This Fall, we're bringing our unique perspectives and robust experience to our class DSO599: Data Analytics for the Games Industry at the USC Marshall School of Business.

It might take me years to make my own game, or write a novel, but those dreams will never materialize if I keep delaying and never take the first step. 🗺️ My days now are pretty cool. I am working on an indie puzzle game with a small team. We've been at it for a few months with one major design reset. We are planning to build the entire game by hand, the old-fashioned way, by experts in design, narrative, art, and audio. I'm utilizing AI to help me learn new skills. I'm learning Unreal right now, in fact! 💻 My days are much more evenly split between game development, household and family time, and self-care, health, and community. I'm working, but also finding more mental space and time to breathe. 👨👩👧👦 🎮 Steam Next Fest 🎮 That being said, I'm posting because our team had been planning to enter our project into a future Steam NextFest, which is a special event to demo upcoming titles. The October NextFest just finished, and we are hearing things like: - Developers are withdrawing game demos due to fears of being copied quickly by others using AI 😱 - AI disclosures are a mixed bag - inconsistently used by developers, self-reported without accuracy enforcement, and AI involvement changes customer expectations 🔍 - It's growing harder to tell what is made by AI and what isn't, and that's scary as a developer 😿 As a small indie team that was hoping to utilize NextFest for awareness, this changes the landscape significantly. What if we work for a year on a project, only for customers to claim our work is AI? What is the point of crafting by hand if customers can't tell or appreciate the difference anyway? How do we share our game ahead of its release without risking it being copied? Is NextFest still a good way to get our name out there? 😕 We are still a long ways off from having anything to share, but this has been weighing on my mind. So this post is part life update, and part asking the collective hive mind for advice. What should small indie devs do? How would you adapt? 🆘 * I wrote this post by hand. All words and emoji choices are my own. *

Vic Bekarian reacted on thisI spent last week in Cologne where I attended Gamescom as part of the German American Chamber of Commerce, Inc. – GACC New York delegation. Attending Gamescom was a dream come true, and completely exceeded my expectations. I loved meeting so many new friends, as well as reconnecting with some old ones. A huge thank you to Michael Primbs and Marietta Ruhl for organizing the delegation and giving me the opportunity to be a part of it. Gamescom, I will most definitely be back. Next time with an extra suitcase! I also want to shout out some games and artists who made an impression on me. Vic Bekarian reacted on thisVic Bekarian reacted on thisI’m extremely excited to share that I am joining Riot Games as Director of Product Management for the Cross Valorant Experience. The interview process was rigorous, and it gave me a lot of confidence in Riot and the talented people that I’m joining. The Valorant team has been cooking on some extremely exciting things, and I’m humbled to be part of what’s coming. It can be hard to share good personal news in the face of so much industry layoff bad news, and with so many good friends and talented colleagues really struggling to find work. I just want to offer some encouragement: keep looking, and adapt. Everyone’s struggle and story is a bit different, but there is some common wisdom that I’ve learned in my own journey these past few months, and talking with friends across the industry. I am fortunate that I was able to take time off to focus on family and my wife’s recovery following surgery, however, this was still the most challenging period I've ever had between roles. It’s exciting to anticipate the next adventure, but uncertainty can be difficult in even the best of circumstances. If anyone is really struggling to get callbacks and chances, reach out to me and let’s talk. What I’ve learned navigating the current landscape might be helpful for you. Once again, enormous thanks to everyone who supported me along the way, especially Sarah and the unwavering belief and trust she showed during this time. Thanks as well to everyone who has reached out since my last post. “Drink some water, reload your mags, and let's get back out there.”
